To be angry at the frenzy caused by others last night

I think it was utterly disrespectful. We are in lockdown and it was not the right time for a protest. I agree with a quiet, respectful, socially distanced space to grieve - which is what appeared to happen during the day.

You’re talking about the Sarah Everard VIGIL I take it?

The Met police ballsed up big time. Try and do some research before you make a sweeping generalisation about what took place.

Viviennemary · 14/03/2021 13:07

I didnt approve of the vigil going ahead without permission. However, the police handling of it was utterly shameful.

marshflamingo · 14/03/2021 13:10

I agree that the police attacking women at a vigil was disgraceful.

I am very angry about their conduct and their complete lack of humility in acknowledging how badly they fucked up.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 14/03/2021 13:11

Unless you were there you can’t comment on whether it was peaceful or not at night, we all know the press represent things how they choose and perhaps if the police had a tiny modicum of sense they would have worked together to make sure it could have gone ahead without their disgraceful behaviour.
It was one of the met’s own who allegedly killed Sarah, we rely on our police to protect us and keep us safe not to shut us up when we pay our respects to one of our own.
RIP Sarah, Flowers to your family.

Yep
burritofan · 14/03/2021 13:12

The original organisers of the vigil made every effort to organise a calm, socially distanced, responsible event. The Met essentially told them to go fuck themselves. Then waded in to the reorganised event and caused all the aggro. This police brutality was entirely the Met’s choice and it was deliberate.

Cabinfever10 · 14/03/2021 13:12

Were you saying this about all the BLM protests at the height of the pandemic @BarometerTV ?
Do women's lives matter?
Should we just shut up and keep letting 1 woman be murdered every 3 days and all the sexual assaults happen because it's not convenient?

Police are fking arseholes. Zero respect for them after the shit show of this last year.

Lineofconcepcion · 14/03/2021 13:15

Yet again, the police make a complete hash of things, so let's put the blame squarely where it belongs shall we . . .

Love2cycle · 14/03/2021 13:16

The police have really messed up here.
Attacking women at a protest about attacking women. How stupid can they be?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/03/2021 13:17

I wouldn't have gone BUT would question:

Why is there a seeming pattern against women gathering?

Why was there a media scrum at the bandstand prior to women arriving?

Why didn't the police move them on?

Why was there a vociferous group of 'agitators' there?

Why weren't they moved on?

Why did the police not focus on those people who were shouting, causing a ruckus?

Why did the police kettle the women who weren't doing anythy other than standing?

Who made the operational decision to disperse women standing peacefully and not the other people who were equally illegally in that space and were initially causing a disturbance?

However you view the actions of the women who chose to gather, there are more underlying issues that need to see daylight.

Theimpossiblegirl · 14/03/2021 13:18

The police showed just how much they respect women last night. It was like something from The Handmaid's Tale.

BarometerTV · 14/03/2021 13:20

I know nothing more or less than any of you, so don’t attack me for giving an opinion. I feel sorry for the police quite frankly. I think the vast majority are decent people doing an incredibly difficult job - and then vilified by the public. I have no idea whether the amount of force used last night was disproportionate - as I’m not purely relying on media reports and I wasn’t there. But events during the day looked respectful.

If it had been a teacher who was involved, would we be protesting against teachers?

OP posts:
TempsPerdu · 14/03/2021 13:22

Nope. I’m more concerned about the policing bill and its implications for our right to protest.

Last night’s gathering was a vigil, in very sensitive circumstances, and the police completely failed to respond in a proportionate and respectful manner.

The Met police have acted appallingly this week, and police forces in general have been overreaching throughout the pandemic.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/03/2021 13:23

@BarometerTV you’ve missed the point with that one.

BarometerTV · 14/03/2021 13:23

@TempsPerdu during the day - it looked exactly like that - a vigil.

beyondtheshoe · 14/03/2021 13:25

It was always going to end up badly.

Every similar demonstration and gathering has a few trouble makers, provoking and making sure the reaction, and only the reaction gets filmed and shared.

The police was never going to win. Banning it completely would have turned against them. Trying to control the ones causing disturbance to get a reaction? As expected they are now the bad guys.

it's shameful. It's not surprising, but it's embarrassing.

It makes us women look like disrespectful harpies, and I am getting sick and tired of people trying to bring us down that way.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 14/03/2021 13:25

It wasn’t a protest, it was a vigil.

Are you a police officer @BarometerTV? Or a journo?

BarometerTV · 14/03/2021 13:26

@SmidgenofaPigeon have I? People are blaming the actions of one terrible police officer on all police officers. That’s stereotyping and it’s wrong.

beyondtheshoe · 14/03/2021 13:26

A few of my FEMALE friends were working last night. So the police "disrespecting women".. please, give me a break.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/03/2021 13:26

@TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet I have to wonder.

Motnight · 14/03/2021 13:26

It was a vigil. My daughter went and helped a young woman who had been shoved out of the way for no reason by police and had fallen over.

But let's keep silencing women. Now we can't even show respect for another woman murdered.

Therealjudgejudy · 14/03/2021 13:26

Really OP? Really?
