Posting for traffic really. Just that... if your workplace let you change/adapt your hours to suit school pick up etc then what hours do you do? I need to do 39hours to make it full time. My dh can do drop offs but not pick up as his hours aren't flexible.

How long does it take you to get to the school. Do they have an after school club?

sillysausages123 · 14/03/2021 11:26

@MuddleMoo 10mins. No Afterschool club.

I'm part time but I do 28 hours, 2x 6 hour days finishing at 2.30 and 2x 8 hour days when dc go to after school club.

I couldn't fit 39 hours in and finish at 2.30 every day, but I could start at 7.30 every day and do 5 x 7 hour days which would be about 32.5 hours with 30 minute lunch breaks.

Blue5238 · 14/03/2021 11:27

I used to do 4 days spread over 5... Essentially one full day and four 3/4 days... So I left at 3 to do school run on my shorter days.
If you need to fit in 39 hours it will be trickier though. Could you do after school club maybe 1-2 days per week that your dh picks up from and you work late, to fit in more hours on those days and fewer on the other days?

superduster · 14/03/2021 11:27

Work evenings? Or pay for childcare most days. Working 39 hours isn't really compatible with doing every school pick up.

Fcuk38 · 14/03/2021 11:27

Surely you can work out what you need to do yourself? What time do you have to leave to lick up the kids will give you your start time.
Doubt you will get 39 hours in though around school hours and travel. I used to do 7-2:30 but some businesses won’t like you going in that early depending upon job role.

LenaBlack · 14/03/2021 11:28

Core hours 8-14 (if your DHs us doing drop offs) and the remaining hours as flexible- so can do it in the evenings from home or do 2 long days with kids in childcare and 3 shorter ones etc.

Stompythedinosaur · 14/03/2021 11:29

Both dp and I have had jibs where we compressed our hours to accommodate childcare (I did three 12.5 hour shifts, with one of these being at the weekend, he did four 9.5 hour days during the week).

Now our set up is that we both finish early once a week, not early enough to get them at the end of school but early enough to get them after the afterschool club an hour later.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 14/03/2021 11:30

I dont know anyone who works doing all the school pick ups and drop ups and doesnt use any childcare who works full 39 hours a week.

I do 8-5 2 days and 8-3 2 days. I work from home on the 8-3 days so on those so do the pick up then and on my day off. Dh drops off in the morning on the 2 days he can wfh. We use a childminder for 2 mornings and 2 afternoons a week.

Watto1 · 14/03/2021 11:30

7:30-2:30 plus one Saturday in four. Dh drops the dc at school in the morning and I collect them in the afternoon . Fortunately DH has been working from home during Covid so he’s been supervising the home schooling.

oohmyback · 14/03/2021 11:32

I don't do felxi hours as such but I'm a teacher so I I don't have a meeting Icou of finish at 3 but still have a 30 min commute. I do 5 days a fortnight using breakfast club in the morning and my sister in the afternoon. I usually pick up around 5.

At my old school when I worked Fridays I asked to be free in the timetable last thing so I could do school pick up.

My husband is self employed so fully flexible if he likes. (But also a 30 min commute) This means INSET days and sickness are covered easily. In an emergency we have my sister and my mum (in usual times)close by.

Really a combination of a support network and flexible hours for BOTH parents is probably ideal!

sillysausages123 · 14/03/2021 11:32

@trilby I'm thinking if I start at 7 and finish at 2.45/50. And not taking my lunch break just my breakfast break.

@Fcuk38 yes I can but I'm just asking to see what others do I suppose. It's the finish time that's stumping me for some reason.

@superduster I can't do evenings

RuggeryBuggery · 14/03/2021 11:34

Surely it’s pretty hard to do full time 39 hours and fit round school which is basically 25 hours a week, never mind commuting?

I guess you start as early as you can. But assuming you could work until 3pm, doing 8-3 would still only be 5 x 6.5 hours which is 32.5 hours a week (Assuming you have to take 30 mins unpaid lunch)
I have a longer journey to school so do 9.15-2.15, no lunch break.

babyyodaxmas · 14/03/2021 11:35

I did 40hrs as 7:30-4:30 X 3 (after school clubs) and 9:15- 2:45 X2 I have a paid 1/2 hr lunch break but on my early finish days I ate lunch at my desk.

RuggeryBuggery · 14/03/2021 11:35

Legally at my work you have to have an unpaid break if doing 6 hours or more

Dustyhedge · 14/03/2021 11:36

Even if you lived next door to the school, you’re going to struggle to get 39 hours in. You might be able to compress and do 2 long days with an after school nanny and then earlies for the other 3 days.

8- 6 9.5 (with 30 min lunch) x2 and then 7-2 (6.5) x3 and you’d be close.

I personally wouldn’t accept a flexible working request that incorporated evening working or working time with children at home as it isn’t likely to be ideal for anyone concerned.

RuggeryBuggery · 14/03/2021 11:36

I think starting at 7am 5 days a week unless you’re exclusively wfh would be pretty hard going personally but I’m not a morning person!

Chocolateandamaretto · 14/03/2021 11:37

Start early and finish at 2.45. I’m only about 15 minutes away though, and I only do 30 hours. 39 might not be feasible unless you can catch up at home in the evening/weekends.

babyyodaxmas · 14/03/2021 11:37

I think you are entitled to a paid 20 minute break

Oly4 · 14/03/2021 11:37

Media and PR, working 7-3 or 8-2 plus 4-6
It can be done, you just have to find the right employer

MuddleMoo · 14/03/2021 11:38

Depending on your job you might need a 30 minute break somewhere at least or your accuracy might suffer

babyyodaxmas · 14/03/2021 11:39

I think if you can get to school twice a week , whilst working ft you are doing ok.

babyyodaxmas · 14/03/2021 11:41

I realise those figures don't work. I think I either did those extra 2 hrs at home or took holiday.

RuthW · 14/03/2021 11:41

Surely you don't get a choice unless you work evenings. It would have to be 7am - 3pm.
