To increase my prices?

I have recently started selling limited edition prints or my drawings on Etsy. So far going well - been doing it 8 weeks - average income £200 a week, sold about 9 a week.

I popped on here earlier this week (for some help with some retail advice as been approached by a local shop for them to sell them) and several people said I was undercharging. Several people IRL (not friends/family) have also said the same. So I need to try and gauge if I need to put my prices up. Often too low a price can be as off putting as too high a price.

I sell currently at
A5 - £15.00
A4 - £17.50
A3 - £25.00

Prints are Gilcee/Fine Art quality with certificate of authenticity.
Postage is included.

General consensus is I should raise prices to more like
A5 - £20
A4 - £25
A3 - £30

I have attached a couple of photos of the kind of stuff I do.

So, I know they won't be everyone's taste. But If you could pretend you did like them - or that they would be a perfect gift for your sister because she loves cows/hares/boxing- what would you be willing to pay?

First time at enabling voting.
YABU - keep your prices at £15.00 -£25.00 depending on size - I wouldn't pay more

YANBU increase to £20.00-£35.00 depending on size, I would pay this.

Any other pricing comments welcome.

Thank you

OP I think I was on your original thread? I favourited your Etsy page and I can see it's going well, I think you can charge more.

WorraLiberty · 13/03/2021 12:30

@WorraLiberty my fave is the St George's hall with Pterodactyl

Far too many to choose from there!

Viviennemary · 13/03/2021 12:30

Cross post. I now understand. Your original work. They are very good indeed.

Doidontimmm · 13/03/2021 12:34

Please can you pm me the name of your shop. Thank you!

Okbussitout · 13/03/2021 12:40

Wher are you based op? It's worth seeing if there's a local Facebook group for artists or an artist development org locally. You don't have to have studied art to be an artist.

WeWentToTheAnimalFair · 13/03/2021 12:40

Can you DM me the shop link please !

Peppafrig · 13/03/2021 12:40

For just a print I think your original pricing was correct. Not that those prices would put me off anyway .

TalktotheFoot · 13/03/2021 12:40

Yes, you are definitely undercharging. And might I suggest that you start producing numbered and signed limited-edition print runs?

Okbussitout · 13/03/2021 12:41

@Cocopogo

Just as an aside, I prefer to buy things already frames and I can’t be bothered trying to find a frame that fits, paying postage on that and faffing around sorting it so you should consider getting a stack of cheap frames, in black and silver and charging more to cover the additional p&p etc
Yeah I think I'd advise offering this as an option. Personally I buy lots of prints so like to have matching frames and would want it unframed. But as a gift or for people who don't have time to sort a frame then a framed option is a good idea.
minniemoocher · 13/03/2021 12:46

I would keep the a5 cheap to tempt people, but increase the other too. Also with a talent like that, have a price ready for custom originals, I would pay proper money for my ddog to be drawn/painted (with permission to sell on prints to others of course to help you)

Looseleaf · 13/03/2021 12:48

I saw an earlier thread where you said how much you were making and doing well etc, and found it encouraging you’d learnt from you tube but this seems to definitely be helping reach more customers as I’m sure you can work out pricing by raising it and seeing how goes ! Great art though .

Okbussitout · 13/03/2021 12:50
Your prices are definitely lower than others - although I think their quality is better. You should compare your giraffe pic to Sophie Green's, for example. They are almost mirror images of each other Hmm www.artistsandillustrators.co.uk/sophiestrails/artwork/104879
I don't mean this to be offensive op as you're obviously talented. But this isn't a massively original style or concept. (lovely as it is) so I think it's a bit much to suggest copying.

I'm an artist but don't do work like this. I do see a huge amount of art though and I have a friend who loves this style. We often visit or local selling gallery (the biscuit factory) I've seen lots of this type of thing over the years. I would never say any of the artists are copying each other it's just a style like cubism, or impressionism.

TeacupDrama · 13/03/2021 12:53

you need to be very specific about the run of limited edition anything above 500 means very little and they must be numbered properly like 163/500 and the run can't be increased if more popular

more limited editions of under 100 are more valuable

when you see limited editions of 5000 etc advertised it is because they reckon 5000 is the number that will sell

I would stick to smaller limited editions of 250max and mostly 100
good idea to use standard sizing so a standard frame fits

Warsawa31 · 13/03/2021 12:56

No the price rises seem reasonable :)

Where do you get the prints from ? Have you checked if you can reduce the cost of them maybe

JulietMadeChutney · 13/03/2021 13:06

@Okbussitout - No offence taken at all. I know it is not an "original" style of art with a artistic story or interpretation to it. I am on a few FB art pages so love it when I see stuff that is more....creative I suppose - for want of a better word.

I may be brave at some stage and try some different styles. Still just trying to get my head around I can draw a teapot that looks like a teapot! Head still spinning a bit from that to be honest. This is my most "arty" piece yet (in my mind...probably not in anyone else's) as it is the least detailed with pencil strokes etc. Probably not noticeable to anyone else. But it took some bravery on my part to stop and not add in every hair detail.

I just need to push myself probably. I have avidly been watching binging on all the Portrait and Landscape artists of the year which has opened my mind to how you can get a likeness without needing it to be 100% realistic. It is wonderful - I have a whole new world to explore. Between work and making tea Grin

I love it

Sorry to fangirl at you but I find you inspiring.

JulietMadeChutney · 13/03/2021 13:18

@lunaheather - No thank you - you have been fab - it is a wierd journey I am on - which is extra tricky if you have self-esteem issues (not that anyone irl know except DH/DSis). So your support has really, really helped Flowers

Definitely undercharging omg. I'd pay way more.

Livinginlalaland21 · 13/03/2021 13:21

Love the dog! Is that your dog? If so I’m insanely jealous!!!

MatildaTheCat · 13/03/2021 13:33

Am I the only person who entered ‘Impressions of Baldrick’ into the search engine? Grin

Lovely drawings.

fuckityfuckitffs · 13/03/2021 13:36

Op how do you scan artwork without it looking messed up or losing quality once scanned? If that makes sense.

TotorosNeighbour · 13/03/2021 13:48

Hi OP,
I think your work is very good! Also, that you should put your expenses down and see if you are actually making anything out of it, don't forget to take into consideration your time - you should be reimbursed for your time too !
Giclee is expensive because it is of high quality and you may be undercharging. Re future work, your prices also should reflect your skill development.
Many arts venues and libraries have moved their drawing clubs/workshops online so might be worth doing a bit of research and you might something right for you.
Qualifications don't make you good, I was a fine art major in uni but after ten years of not drawing , I am very embarrassed to say that I cannot draw as good as you...

shouldistop · 13/03/2021 14:20

I'd keep the a5 cheap and add about £5 onto the other sizes.
