To increase my prices?

I have recently started selling limited edition prints or my drawings on Etsy. So far going well - been doing it 8 weeks - average income £200 a week, sold about 9 a week.

I popped on here earlier this week (for some help with some retail advice as been approached by a local shop for them to sell them) and several people said I was undercharging. Several people IRL (not friends/family) have also said the same. So I need to try and gauge if I need to put my prices up. Often too low a price can be as off putting as too high a price.

I sell currently at
A5 - £15.00
A4 - £17.50
A3 - £25.00

Prints are Gilcee/Fine Art quality with certificate of authenticity.
Postage is included.

General consensus is I should raise prices to more like
A5 - £20
A4 - £25
A3 - £30

I have attached a couple of photos of the kind of stuff I do.

So, I know they won't be everyone's taste. But If you could pretend you did like them - or that they would be a perfect gift for your sister because she loves cows/hares/boxing- what would you be willing to pay?

First time at enabling voting.
YABU - keep your prices at £15.00 -£25.00 depending on size - I wouldn't pay more

YANBU increase to £20.00-£35.00 depending on size, I would pay this.

Any other pricing comments welcome.

Thank you

I think small size prints it’s better to keep them lower - A5 isn’t really useful for anything to mount etc. It’s more of a card sort of size.

Also seems to me these are the sort of things people might like to frame so they need to factor that into the cost of a print.

I think the 17.50 is a weird amount and the proposed increased rates are reasonable. Have you checked out the prices of other similar prints?

Also, as an aside what do you mean you new to art?!!! How long have you been drawing for to reach this level of skill? Shock

Vierty · 13/03/2021 10:15

They’re great. You are definitely undercharging.

JulietMadeChutney · 13/03/2021 10:15

@Igmum

I think you're definitely under charging. Each of these looks like many hours of work. Definitely put your prices up
God yes, with planning and drawing a minimum of 4 hours for the animals/boots etc. 5-6 hours for the townscapes. Then you have the scanning/admin of getting on Etsy etc. Then the admin of packing/getting posted/delivered.

I work part-time in a school - so this is a sideline. pays more than school-admin roles though

It is very hard to say without knowing your cost structure for the prints. If the marginal cost is small then price low and sell lots. However if you are making less than half the retail cost in profit you should probably increase prices. Also why not change prices for 2 weeks and see what happens , you should be able to judge the impact on sales and decide if the total profit increases or decreases

@JulietMadeChutney

I don't know much about art but would the town be one in North Hertfordshire?

changingnames786 · 13/03/2021 10:16

I thought they were photographs to start with, flipping heck you're talented. My DH buys hand drawn prints of F1 cars/images, he pays a lot more than that. They seller often also makes a limited number of certain types and then writes the number on them and he charges more for those.

Yes charge more!!

nanbread · 13/03/2021 10:17

I think you need to tread the tightrope of being affordable but not giving them away.

I think your new prices are a bit too high but it's hard to be objective because not to my taste.

I recently paid £10 for an A5 print and £38 for an A4 print (but the second one is from a well known - on Etsy - desirable artist with a big following).
Because the A5 print is nicely printed and so affordable, I've since bought several more.

I would personally price them at:

A5 £15
A4 £21
A3 £28

anniegun · 13/03/2021 10:17

Pricing prints is very different compared with the original artwork where you need to cover your talent and time costs with just a single sale

HeathIns · 13/03/2021 10:17

No I think they are selling because your prices are right.
It is a print after all (albeit a really great one) not an original.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 13/03/2021 10:17

Yes it looks like Baldock! Excellent drawings and you are definitely undercharging. Amazing to think you only started recently.

pisspants · 13/03/2021 10:18

I agree you should increase the price. I'd start £25 for A5, £45 for A4 and £65 for A3.
Good unframed prints go for similar so it would still be a bargain for that!
Do you take commissions as I think you could charge more for that and more as well if you were to offer them mounted in frames. Good luck op you have a great talent

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/03/2021 10:18

Last I bough couple of months ago was £20 for a4. The guy is getting well known and was even on a tv, done exhibitions etc.
There are othwrs charging double for same size though.
I do think you are bot too cheap, but don't go overboard on the other end too.

Nice work btw

BrilliantBetty · 13/03/2021 10:18

I was just looking for something similar. An a5 print of a local scene watercolour.
I was looking to spend £30-35 but I really wanted it already framed, just something slim & wooden, because I'm hopeless at getting around to framing. Also for gifts people might prefer to give framed so they know it'll go up rather than sitting in a drawer for ages before getting around to it.

I think unframed £20 - £25 would be good value for the A5.

This.
Whitney168 · 13/03/2021 10:19

The dog one is fantastic Juliet - you could probably make good money doing personalised ones?

Okbussitout · 13/03/2021 10:19

How many in an addion?

pisspants · 13/03/2021 10:20

ah sorry, just saw they are prints. Even so the prices I said would be about right for that.

Mintjulia · 13/03/2021 10:20

I'd leave the A5 price as it is. It's an entry level price and allows people to take home something they like, and get the details from it when they can afford something larger. It's also a nice gift size/price for children.

But the others, yes, raise your prices by maybe 50%.

JaninaDuszejko · 13/03/2021 10:21

Are those prices for the prints or the originals? You should clearly distinguish between the two, and charge much more for the originals than the prints.

Hated art at school. Gave it up as soon as possible. Could. Not. Draw.

Then in home-schooling last summer DS (Yr7) art lessons were appalling, so I nicked the project from the school I worked at which was to "Draw 20 Things" which we did as a family. A drawing a day to share at tea time. Random stuff - some food, a superhero, a villain, the pope's left knee (family joke). Then my sister joined in (remotely). Which made her and I revive a little bit of our good-natured sibling competitiveness....so I Youtubed a couple of drawing videos...and "got it". Got the bug...and continued after the 20 things were done.

Youtube is a marvellous thing don't tell my 12yo I said that

So, drawing since June/July. Attached is the "before" level. Including the pope's left knee.

To increase my prices?

You are an amazing artist, please charge more.

WhySoSensitive · 13/03/2021 10:24

I paid £20 for a drawing of my son in a particular style which is much less quality than these in A5.
You need to massively increase.

For example a friend draws cows and hers sell for £100-125, because of the realism in her portraits.

SilverRoe · 13/03/2021 10:24

Get out of town!! That’s amazing!! Clearly a calling!! Smile

iklboo · 13/03/2021 10:25

You've posted before with your work haven't you? I absolutely love it! You're amazingly talented.

Yes prints - limited edition (though relatively high run number).

Originals (and have sold a few) £125 for charcoal and £150 for pastel animals. Would charge more for the townscapes. I am getting the townscapes mounted so can sell them (slightly scrappy edges -so want to neaten them up for sale).
