To think it’s normal for kids to play with old loo roll cardboard?!

UncleBunclesHouse · 12/03/2021 09:21

My DH thinks is very unhygienic to handle the cardboard tube out of used loo rolls and for DC to play with them. I think this is completely mad and have always known little kids to use them for building and crafts etc. I really don’t get it. AIBU??

Spray them with domestos, kills 99.9% germs dead Grin

AmelieTaylor · 12/03/2021 09:59

I watched a program once, part of it was showing how much fecal matter was on some in a schools 'junk material' stash (donated by various people). It completely put me off using them. Especially if a loo roll isn't on a holder or if small children are using them.

Plenty of other cardboard tubes they can use.

I would imagine most of that comes from children touching it whilst looking for the perfect box to make their model. Even if your children's junk modelling stash doesn't contain loo roll tubes it will contain all sorts of germs from small unwashed hands.

Spidey66 · 12/03/2021 10:06

I think it's unhealthy for a child to live in a totally sterile environment, and doesn't hell their immune systems develop.

Spidey66 · 12/03/2021 10:06

Help not hell

GertrudeKerfuffle · 12/03/2021 10:07

For fuck's sake.

@FTEngineerM
Re microwaving toilet rolls
I may have dreamt this but I’m sure the school science adviser website CLEAPSS advises this for junk modelling in primary D&T.

RaspberryCoulis · 12/03/2021 10:22

Our gerbils DEVOUR cardboard tubes of all types. They don't eat them, just shred them for bedding.

Our school banned loo roll tubes too for "hygiene" reasons. Totally bonkers when you see what else small kids get up to.

Brandysnapzzz · 12/03/2021 10:30

Perfectly normal but I also think it's vile and icky EnvyGrin but that’s because I have OCD and it is definitely my problem, not anyone else's.

(Not entirely sure how I will cope with DC starts making stuff with them, but oh well!)

HappydaysArehere · 12/03/2021 10:36

In a classroom years ago we were told not to use toilet rolls any more and had to use other types of rolls such as those in silver foil, greaseproof etc etc but surely this was because they were being brought in by so many different families. In a home situation that is different. Nothing like a toilet roll as it cuts easily as well and if you snip all around one end they are easily glued on to junk and become turrets on a castle etc etc.

justanotherneighinparadise · 12/03/2021 10:41

I agree that it’s OTT to be worked up about as it’s totally normal, but you sound quite deranged. Who’s to say he got ‘animated’ and even if he did it’s hardly cause for societal breakdown.

I sound deranged? Pmsl. No, i am not sweating about tubes of cardboard. In the midst of a pandemic where I do think society has lost the plot, getting animated about a toilet roll is probably the cherry on top.

WaltzesWithSnobs · 12/03/2021 10:45

Grin DS used to collect them. He lined them up between the stairs banister and the wall. I think he only stopped because it's now full!

UncleBunclesHouse · 12/03/2021 16:34

@Sparklfairy

Does he bring his phone in with him for a leisurely shit like most men on here? I'd argue that is more hygienic tbh if hes gonna be daft.
That is an EXCELLENT point!! Yes always! I will be using this in counter attack 😂

My DH used to think like yours OP, but has had to overcome his fears since both our DC have an absolute love of toilet roll tubes. They both collect them for their various crafts and I have easily found 30 in their bedrooms when I’ve been having a clear out!

HSE don't have a problem with them!

Crowsaregreat · 12/03/2021 16:57

Or loo roll comes in paper wrappers. Every roll gets stuffed with the wrapper and used as a trumpet by the entire family for a few days. We don't appear to have died of typhoid.

giletrouge · 12/03/2021 17:06

Just show him these OP. Literally so many cool things to make with loo roll tubes...

I let my DC use them but we aren't allowed to send them into school when they request craft supplies. When we've had kids over for parties, I've cut up kitchen paper rolls to use instead.

activitythree · 12/03/2021 17:14

How many people wipe their arses with the tube Confused

I mean, you don't even touch the tube when grabbing tissue for a second wipe ffs.

picklemewalnuts · 12/03/2021 17:21

I've seen a dirty inside of a toilet roll tube. Once seen, never forgotten!

Nohomemadecandles · 12/03/2021 17:22

See, I'm not remotely OTT usually about germs but I am around this. Our loo roll holder fell off years ago so the roll was handled and I noticed I put my fingers into the tube to roll off sheets so I imagine others do too.
Less worried about my own family's germs but I really would ick about someone else's! No loo rolls here please!

OhWhyNot · 12/03/2021 17:25

Ds would use them as a gun (so much for the I shall not buy guns as I don’t want him pretend play shooting)

His school would often ask for cardboard but always stated no loo rolls

crackofdoom · 12/03/2021 17:27

God forbid they do a programme on how much faecal matter is on actual small children....

seven201 · 12/03/2021 17:27

We once asked for them to be brought into school for an upcycling project. One member of staff said "You can't do that. What about aids?" and would not have her mind changed. Utterly ridiculous!

I got in trouble with my dh the other day as I'd asked him to stop leaving empty loo rolls by the toilet so I put one on his pillow the next day when he did it again. He was not a happy bunny!

NormanStangerson · 12/03/2021 17:30

@Latenightreader

We used to sterilise them in the microwave before using them for modelling - can’t remember how long for but it wasn’t long...
Confused it must be exhausting worrying about things like this.
