Please help me to rationalise this...

Hello

I’m usually a logical thinker but I can’t seem to rationalise this and I’m feeling, strangely, quite angry and anxious? I’m hoping that you will tell me that I’m over reacting.

Scott Mills is hosting a Lolathon tomorrow in aid of Comic Relief, which at 10pm will include Scott Mills’ first look at a vulva, Naked Attraction style.

To me, this is in poor taste. Already I’ve seen comments where people are laughing at the prospect and commenting ‘hope you’re filming it’ or words to that effect.

For context, I’m a woman in my 40s with children.

I just feel it’s in poor taste. I’m not sure in what context this will be handled but I feel that wheeling out vulvas, ultimately for a laugh is in poor taste.

I didn’t realise I was prudish but this has got to me. Help!

Sorry for all the references to ‘poor taste’ in my post above.

Thats awful, basically reducing a woman to an item of ridicule!!!

RunningFromInsanity · 10/03/2021 18:24
  1. I’m pretty sure he has actually seen a vulva before
  2. The woman is, I presume, a willing participant.

It’s weird, can’t see how it’s that funny, but it’s not offensive.

SaltySusan · 10/03/2021 18:31

Thank you for your comments, both. I believe that Scott Mills hasn’t been a vulva before, from what is being said. I may have the context wrong but I just find it ‘ick’ - This is for Comic Relief on the BBC. Maybe I need to stop being so sensitive but it’s not my kind of comedy and the target audience I think is younger (than me) people as it’s broadcast on Radio1. Maybe I need to give my head a wobble.

CrunchyBiscs · 10/03/2021 21:31

Maybe he'll follow that up with a closeup of a colostomy bag, then, oh, maybe saggy tits - should be a great laugh, cant wait.

HollysBush · 10/03/2021 21:33

I don’t understand, is it supposed to be funny?

DrManhattan · 10/03/2021 21:37

Sounds like he needs to grow up

CrunchyBiscs · 11/03/2021 17:23

@SaltySusan
where did you hear about this as I can't see anything online now - probably removed

guiltynetter · 11/03/2021 17:24

This is just grim :-/

SaltySusan · 11/03/2021 18:54

Hello, I’m so sorry,I didn’t realise that people were commenting on this thread, I thought it was just me! So I heard it announced on Scott Mills’ radio show yesterday. Felt a bit wrong about it. Googled it and eventually looked Scott up on Twitter.

I believe the lady hosting last it is called Katie and there is still a reference to it on her Twitter page. I believe that it’s happening at 10pm still.

I just feel it’s in poor taste. Despite me not knowing the exact context, I feel it’s using women’s bodies for a laugh. I may be very sensitive and not at all ‘cool’ though.

Also, I’m sorry for the typos x

I don’t understand what is supposed to be funny? So he will look at a vulva and then....? What? Is the vulva itself supposed to be funny or is his reaction to it supposed to be funny? Why would his reaction be funny? I can only assume it’s is expected that he will perform some sort of horrified and disgusted routine?

SmileyClare · 11/03/2021 19:02

Apart from anything, it's not that funny is it? I mean I know he's gay so not particularly interested in female sex organs but I'm sure he's seen a picture online or watched porn in his lifetime.

How is his reaction going to be laugh out loud funny? Will he recoil in horror or something Confused

It's pretty pathetic.

SmileyClare · 11/03/2021 19:07

I'm not Uhtred's sock puppet by the way, just an unfortunate cross post! I agree, just not what I'd find amusing at all, it's the sort of thing 5 year-olds that laugh at bums and willies might find funny.

Hailtomyteeth · 11/03/2021 19:09

This is unacceptable. Objectification. Mockery. Demeaning to women. Let him google if he wants to know what a vulva looks like.

rainbowninja · 11/03/2021 19:15

Hmm doesn't sit right with me either, it's a part of someone's body not an object!

SaltySusan · 11/03/2021 19:21

I agree with all your points. I feel sad that this is what some people think makes entertainment. My son is in his late teens but I’d be disappointed if he thought that was amusing.

I can’t explain it logically as it’s not me that he’s looking at but I feel a bit violated. I think it’s in poor, puerile taste.

That segment is being hosted by two women - Maybe the context will be different but it's just something that I wouldn’t have participated in or promoted myself. I don’t think it’s a funny subject.

OP posts:
MuddleMoo · 11/03/2021 19:23

I don't get how this is funny.

Joeblack066 · 11/03/2021 19:30

I think you’ve been had? There is nothing online that I can find?
If the BBC did this I would absolutely be complaining. It perpetuated myths re gay men, objectifies women, just for starters!
I had to look what a LOL- athon was tho, as I read LOLA- thon!

nokidshere · 11/03/2021 19:30

I agree with all your points. I feel sad that this is what some people think makes entertainment.

It doesn't make me sad but I am always incredulous at what people find 'entertaining'. Naked attraction, Love Island, etc are all revolting but have a large mainstream following, I don't see how this is any different? I'm assuming the person who is showing her vulva isn't being forced into doing so?

Cnp41 · 11/03/2021 19:36

Scott Mills radio show is the most boring, self indulgent pile of shite I've ever listened to. He has a little sidekick whose name I can't remember and they just go on like strangely prepubescent school boys so I imagine this is right up their street. The music is usually total shite too. I like Greg James and Grimmy - but those two in the middle of the day are absolute nonsense. Very VERY unfunny.

SenecaTrewe · 11/03/2021 20:07

Pure misogyny.

IndecentFeminist · 11/03/2021 20:09

Yup, that's horrible. Total and utter misogyny for entertainment. Shame on the BBC.

SaltySusan · 11/03/2021 20:12

I’m sure it’s happening, it’s on one of the lady’s who is hosting the event’s Twitter page.

Meanwhile mars (maltesers) ate advertising off the back of their comic relief sponsorship that they are supporting "mums' mental health".

If you're unimpressed you could contact Mars and complain to the BBC.
