WEIRD Naighbours! Meth? Something else?

I posted the other day about the Air B&B and their bins...well that's sorted now. I'm now posting about the neighbours on the other side.

We've met them for a hello only once in the three weeks we've been here. They consist of a very elderly man and also a woman and her son.

The elderly man I will call Bob. This is Australia by the way. Now Bob is about 75 and not in great physical shape but he's very friendly and seemed nice.

His housemates - because that's what they are, struck me as odd.

She's in her late 60s or early 70s and we can call her Mary and her son Joe is about 50. Bob told me he'd once owned the house they all live in but about 30 years ago he sold it and the buyer continued to rent it to Bob.

Bob also said "The landlord doesn't like Mary and Joe living here with me. He tries to get them out...but they've helped me. They had nowhere to live...before they came I was in a mess. They've tidied the house and garden and sorted all the junk. It's a lot better than when I was alone."

But over the weeks I've heard the odd shouting argument and there was one time the cops came. All they were doing was talking to Bob though.

Anyway...three morning ago it was early and still a bit dark, I looked out off my balcony and into their front garden and saw Mary crawling around the garden in her dressing gown picking at the grass.

Their lawn is very scrubby..just the odd patch of grass and she was it seemed, picking single blades of grass over and over again, very concentrated.

I thought "Must be some gardening thing" but was Confused

Then DH told me he'd seen her doing the same thing another evening.

Then last night, I went to bed early, about 9.30pm and their garden is sort of below our bedroom and I could hear the son talking but couldn't make out what he was saying...and noises. And DH came in and said "They're digging out there in the dark!" and they were! I could hear the spade.

We only heard the son and the Mother's voice. Now DH is convinced they've killed Joe and were burying him....I'm convinced they're meth addicts though and are doing weird things because I've heard meth addicts do repetative, pointless tasks when they're off their heads.

This area is odd. It's very beautiful but not long ago it was a bit rougher than it is now...it's being gentrified so there are AIr B&Bs on the one hand and then really scruffy little shack type houses too.

Should I call in a welfare check on Joe? Or not worry because the police are already aware of them? He seemed ok when I spoke to him last...

@RiojaRose

You’ve only been there three weeks? The problem is that you don’t know whether Bob’s story is reliable. It sounds a bit odd to me. Everything about your neighbours sounds odd. You could ask Mary how Bob is doing but you probably won’t get a satisfactory answer. Most people don’t murder/assault the people they live with but some do. If you’re really concerned the best way to deal with it is to contact the police. I’d be less concerned about the digging and more concerned that Bob might have had a fall and isn’t getting medical care, or something like that.
i agree it does sound odd. I thought that when he first told me. I haven't seen any one of them at all today. Which is unusual as there's always one of them about at the front.

I think I will make up an excuse and knock tomorrow.

@Stoppissingonmyheather

Oh this is good advice for you Just a friendly wave each morning helps to make a better day, you need to get to know each other, next door is only a footstep away, with a little understanding you can find the perfect blend, neighbours should be there for one another and that's when good neighbours become good friends. Problem solved
😂 🤣

I was thinking this is no Ramsey Street...

HopeMumsnet · 10/03/2021 11:17

Hi all,
Just to confirm that this is a poster who has been with us for a fair while and we've got no reason to think that she is being anything other than truthful. So if we could kindly ask the trollhunters to rack off? Wink

SooMoony · 10/03/2021 12:25

I would ask for a welfare check, just in case.`

ThePricklySheep · 10/03/2021 12:30

Can you ask the neighbours on the other side what they think?

ThePricklySheep · 10/03/2021 12:35

@TheQueef

Is meth a problem in OZ? I thought it was opoids like the UK.
Apparently it’s got one of the highest rates of usage in the world! In the month before a survey done here, 400,000 people had used it. delphihealthgroup.com/methamphetamine/global-use-statistics/

😂 well said Hope 👍

OP i do hope that your neighbour Bob is ok 😊

So instead of trying to find out if your elderly neighbours are on you're just branding them meth heads and 'methy' !

LittlestBoho · 10/03/2021 13:14

That's clearly not what's happening, the OP is concerned about a friendly old man who appears to live with two strange acting drug addicts.

Meth is a huge problem in Australia (it's known as 'Ice' there) and many people who take meth do have a specific look, so you would have a good idea if they were a drug user.

Definitely call the police for a welfare check on Bob. Is there a local authority care team who looks out for the elderly in your area? Perhaps you could speak to them, it sounds like Bob is being cuckooed.

I am not branding the elderly man a meth addict but suspicious the people staying with him ARE!

Read the thread fgs.

I'm checking on him in the morning. It's late here now. I haven't seem any of them until just now when I heard that bloody spade again and see one of them...the younger man I think, out in the garden in pitch black and raining and he's "digging" with a spade. Only he's not digging. He's just stabbing the spade randomly into the ground. Over and over.

Boho It does sound or look a bit like that. The woman has a definite look of a meth user. Her son not so much.

Snakes nest you mark my words

ApolloandDaphne · 10/03/2021 13:25

It all sounds very odd. I do hope Bob is okay.

HadEnoughOfBears · 10/03/2021 13:43

@FortunesFave

Have you been to check yet?

NuclearDH · 10/03/2021 13:48

I’m curious why is meth such an issue in the States and Australia but not in the U.K.?

Jeds55 · 10/03/2021 13:59

@Stoppissingonmyheather Grin been a while since I heard that and now can't get it out of my head
Hope all is OK OP

LittlestBoho · 10/03/2021 14:15

@NuclearDH

Yes, it's weird isn't it? It seems like the UK drug market is already well established so it's hard for newer drugs to break in, especially if they're expensive, which meth is in the UK.
TheQueef · 10/03/2021 15:16

I agree about the lack (fortunately) of meth in the U.K. I was under the impression that somehow space is relevant to production (which rules OZ in)
I think I was basing this on PBS/ breaking bad education on it Blush

calmearth · 10/03/2021 17:41

@LittlestBoho the OP has no idea if they are drug addicts. Many medical conditions give the look of a drug addict. The only sure thing is that they are acting strangely.

calmearth · 10/03/2021 17:45

@FortunesFave I have read the thread FGS thanks. You sound like a nosy neighbour.

longwayoff · 10/03/2021 17:51

Have your neighbours still got their teeth? If yes, you can probably just put them down as possibly homicidal rather than drug crazed homicidal.

FortunesFave · 10/03/2021 20:18

@HadEnoughOfBears no, I've just woken up. Last time I posted it was 11 at night or thereabouts. Now it's 6.45 in the morning!

@NuclearDH something to do with poverty hitting differently here. A lot of the really badly hit communities are remote ones.

There's nothing to do there...no work or very little. I don't think meth here is that expensive. But could be wrong.

And maybe it's easier to make it due to big area....not hard to go out to a shack somewhere and open a factory.

OP posts:
Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 10/03/2021 20:57

Do let us know if Bob is OK when you've been over there OP.

Soz I got over-invested and forgot the time!

FortunesFave · 11/03/2021 03:15

Ok saw the woman in the front yard so went out and said "Hi!" over the fence and she wasn't very forthcoming. Just a muttered hi.

So I said "How's Bob? Haven't seen him around..." and she said "He's been a bit crook. He gets back pain."

And that was all.
