WEIRD Naighbours! Meth? Something else?

I posted the other day about the Air B&B and their bins...well that's sorted now. I'm now posting about the neighbours on the other side.

We've met them for a hello only once in the three weeks we've been here. They consist of a very elderly man and also a woman and her son.

The elderly man I will call Bob. This is Australia by the way. Now Bob is about 75 and not in great physical shape but he's very friendly and seemed nice.

His housemates - because that's what they are, struck me as odd.

She's in her late 60s or early 70s and we can call her Mary and her son Joe is about 50. Bob told me he'd once owned the house they all live in but about 30 years ago he sold it and the buyer continued to rent it to Bob.

Bob also said "The landlord doesn't like Mary and Joe living here with me. He tries to get them out...but they've helped me. They had nowhere to live...before they came I was in a mess. They've tidied the house and garden and sorted all the junk. It's a lot better than when I was alone."

But over the weeks I've heard the odd shouting argument and there was one time the cops came. All they were doing was talking to Bob though.

Anyway...three morning ago it was early and still a bit dark, I looked out off my balcony and into their front garden and saw Mary crawling around the garden in her dressing gown picking at the grass.

Their lawn is very scrubby..just the odd patch of grass and she was it seemed, picking single blades of grass over and over again, very concentrated.

I thought "Must be some gardening thing" but was Confused

Then DH told me he'd seen her doing the same thing another evening.

Then last night, I went to bed early, about 9.30pm and their garden is sort of below our bedroom and I could hear the son talking but couldn't make out what he was saying...and noises. And DH came in and said "They're digging out there in the dark!" and they were! I could hear the spade.

We only heard the son and the Mother's voice. Now DH is convinced they've killed Joe and were burying him....I'm convinced they're meth addicts though and are doing weird things because I've heard meth addicts do repetative, pointless tasks when they're off their heads.

This area is odd. It's very beautiful but not long ago it was a bit rougher than it is now...it's being gentrified so there are AIr B&Bs on the one hand and then really scruffy little shack type houses too.

Should I call in a welfare check on Joe? Or not worry because the police are already aware of them? He seemed ok when I spoke to him last...

don't go check on him!! If he's been murdered snd they get suspicious your next.

Call the police and Bobs your uncle!

Gobbeldegook · 09/03/2021 23:36

Call the police

justilou1 · 09/03/2021 23:40

Doesn't sound good. Call the police and let them know he's vulnerable. Ask for a welfare check and explain the behaviour.

People on meth do pointless things for hours...dig holes, sort through rubbish, pick at walls...just weird things for nothing.

Oh this is good advice for you
Just a friendly wave each morning helps to make a better day, you need to get to know each other, next door is only a footstep away, with a little understanding you can find the perfect blend, neighbours should be there for one another and that's when good neighbours become good friends. Problem solved

Why are some people being so unkind on this thread? I posted...made a mistake with my made up names...and that's it! I'm a weirdo who makes shite up on MN! I genuinely wanted advice on how best to approach my concern for my neighbour but whatever. You're all bored I suppose.

PurpleTrilby · 10/03/2021 00:48

I say yes, talk to the police. I'd be bloody concerned as well. Ignore the jokers here, nowt better to do. In the UK this would be termed cuckooing if those two have moved in on a vulnerable person to use their home for dealing or other exploitation. I don't know if you have similar laws, but a welfare check sounds like the best thing to do. Good luck.

longwayoff · 10/03/2021 01:18

OK. You think your neighbours have murdered the eldest tenant and buried him in the garden. Should you knock on their door and enquire after his welfare? Given they may be crazed homicidal drug users, it's probably not the best approach. Call the law.

justcannotwithyou · 10/03/2021 01:51

I don't know that Ops life is that exciting. It's this and the bin thing. I would say the bin thing is the height of having a pretty boring life Grin I would be absolutely livid with bins on my lawn too by the way, so not having a go.

I don't think that! I said clearly that I didn't. What I wanted to know was was I being silly to call for a welfare check. If they were just odballs or if it sounded a bit like meth abuse.

I work from home 😂 so yes, I do get a bit overly interested in my surroundings.

People do go out at night to gather up/kill slugs and other creatures in the garden so could be that?
I hope they haven't killed Bob Sad

that's a very good point. They could have been gathering all manner of creepy crawlies...who knows! They've been very quiet today. Still haven't seen Bob.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/03/2021 07:41

They won't dig a hole if you are in Australia, as being at the bottom of the world if they did all the lava inside the earth would pour out of the hole.

I think. Confused

bluetongue · 10/03/2021 08:01

I believe you OP. Some weird shit happens in Australia (I live there too).

Once I had a neighbour I was suspected was involved in drugs. A few weeks before I moved to another rental (mainly because said neighbour was nuts) his house was raided by a van full of cops. No idea what the offence was (was dying to know however). He was arrested and returned to the house later that day. Presumably on bail.

TheQueef · 10/03/2021 08:06

Is meth a problem in OZ?
I thought it was opoids like the UK.

Don't know about opioids only that meth abuse is at really high levels.

You’ve only been there three weeks? The problem is that you don’t know whether Bob’s story is reliable. It sounds a bit odd to me. Everything about your neighbours sounds odd. You could ask Mary how Bob is doing but you probably won’t get a satisfactory answer. Most people don’t murder/assault the people they live with but some do. If you’re really concerned the best way to deal with it is to contact the police. I’d be less concerned about the digging and more concerned that Bob might have had a fall and isn’t getting medical care, or something like that.
