Netflix blurring older actresses...WTF?

Just watching "Dead To Me" on Netflix, and can't help but notice some weird blurring on Christina Applegate's (main actress) neck and forehead...is this a common thing, to blur actresses over 40? To erase their lines and imperfections? Never noticed it before but I can't unsee it now.

AIBU to be a bit stunned by this, or does this often happen in film/TV? Seems really sad that women are photoshopped like this 😕 I can't imagine the same thing would happen with men...

If it was photoshopped you wouldn’t see blurring. I haven’t watched so I do t know what you are referring to, but photoshopping is much more subtle than that. No idea what you are seeing.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 09/03/2021 18:48

It's bizarre, it's really obvious when you see it. Basically her neck and forehead on some scenes are really blurred, like Netflix have put a filter on. Very odd.

I mean it's not Netflix it's down to the series creators but that's common sense surely.

Does anyone remember the gel lens on Miss Ellie in Dallas?

OnSilverStars · 09/03/2021 19:01

I've watched it. I've not noticed any blurring 🤔

Rewis · 09/03/2021 19:02

Me neither 🤔
Candyfloss99 · 09/03/2021 19:03

Are you sure it's not your TV or Internet?

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 09/03/2021 19:03

I've only just started it, and noticed it towards the end of the first episode. I'm bored so I googled it, and turns out other people have noticed it too (on reddit etc).

Yeah definitely sure. As I've said I've Googled it to see if anyone else noticed it and others have seen it too. Strange.

Yes! 😂
FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 09/03/2021 19:09

@DianaT1969 what is a gel lens??

OP posts:
Candyfloss99 · 09/03/2021 19:09

Oh really. I watched it but didn't notice. Must look again.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 09/03/2021 19:11

@Candyfloss99 it isn't on every scene - I've noticed it when the camera is quite zoomed in or focusing on her.

Yes!
mainsfed · 09/03/2021 19:18

Just looked and her neck does look smoother than her décolletage but maybe that’s because she moisturises her neck?

GreenSlide · 09/03/2021 19:23

Oh yeah there is something going on there.
Haven't watched Christina Applegate in anything for a while but that's a lovely picture, looks like she looks more beautiful as she ages, like Catherine O'Hara.

Thingsthatgo · 09/03/2021 19:24

Older women actors have been blurred for decades. I remember my mum talking about putting Vaseline in the camera lens (not literally) when I was little.

CheshireDing · 09/03/2021 19:25

Is it that there is less make up on her face !?

The photo mains has put on doesn’t make her face make up look very good. I thought Christina Applegate was the one in Good Girls but clearly not looking at that photo 😂

Wouldn’t they sure put her in a different outfit rather than arse about with line blurring ?

Ozziewoz · 09/03/2021 19:25

I slap tons of moisturiser on my neck, and take it from me it doesn't work. 😁

Ginius · 09/03/2021 19:26

I've noticed the same on Grace and Frankie, it's really noticeable in the later ones.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 09/03/2021 19:26

In old films I think they used to put Vaseline on the lens!

SnowyBranches · 09/03/2021 19:29

I’m sure this used to happen a lot in the 60s - soft focus. They used to film through a piece of gauze or smear Vaseline on the lens. Think Star Trek had a lot of it. I seem to remember Crystal Carrington getting that treatment in Dynasty in the 80s as well.

SnowyBranches · 09/03/2021 19:30

Sorry, it took me so long to reply everyone has already mentioned the Vaseline!

gobbynorthernbird · 09/03/2021 19:30

Do you know if this is being imposed on actresses or if they have made the choice?
