What do you do when you wash up?

Because when I wash the dishes, I also wipe down the kitchen work surfaces, the dining table and DS highchair as it all seems part of the same job to me - using clean hot soapy water. (We have a small open plan kitchen diner, its not like its an 18 seater table in a different room) DP just washes the dishes and does nothing else as "they are separate jobs". Do I really need to say when hes doing the dishes "Remember to wipe the worksurfaces, clean the table and the highchair"?! Am i expecting too much and they are indeed separate jobs? Maybe a dishwasher is the way forward. But knowing my luck I would have to say "Could you empty the dishwasher AND put all the dishes away" lest there be any confusion.

I also wipe down the sides and the top of the oven when doing the dishes.

StellaKowalski · 09/03/2021 15:24

Sorry - I meant I wipe down the kitchen sides and the oven.

AmandaHugenkiss · 09/03/2021 15:26

I wipe down all the kitchen sides at the same time. Part of the job.

danni0509 · 09/03/2021 15:26

All of it together. Then all the crumbs off the side get hoovered up once the pots and work surfaces are done. Then mopped if needed or floor wiped with antibac wipes.

jenesaisqu0i · 09/03/2021 15:26

I disinfectant the sink and clean the worktops and the hob every time.

ShadierThanaPalmTree · 09/03/2021 15:27

Even if they are separate jobs, is he only able to do one? 🤨 I agree though, it's all one task done at the same time. He sounds like a lazy sod

AllTheCakes · 09/03/2021 15:27

Yep, all the same job.

Chunkymenrock · 09/03/2021 15:27

Yep, of course wiping down is part of it!

bunhead34 · 09/03/2021 15:27

I agree, it's one job!
My DH doesn't even empty the sink of food when he's done, and usually leaves a stray fork or mug or two for me to deal
With 🧐

Oysterbabe · 09/03/2021 15:28

Surfaces are part of the same job.

NotFabulousDarling · 09/03/2021 15:28

We have a dishwasher as of December. So now when loading the dishwasher I wipe the work surfaces and clean the kitchen sink and draining board as they don't get as much water down them as they used to before the dishwasher.
When we didn't have a dishwasher, I did dishes, work surfaces (we didn't have a table or high chair) and I wiped down the baby's plastic-coated bib (after trying to put it through the washing machine that one time which didn't work at all).
DH doesn't do work surfaces and he leaves the dishwasher full for hours after it's finished which mildly annoys me as we could have a clear kitchen with nothing on the surfaces if we filled the dishwasher as we went instead of letting dishes stack up and turn into a job.

Fifthtimelucky · 09/03/2021 15:51

I think they are different jobs. That doesn't mean he can't do both though!

GreenSlide · 09/03/2021 15:54

He needs to wash down the baby's high chair at least, you can't be leaving food to start going rotten there of all places.

LadyDanburysHat · 09/03/2021 15:55

It's a man thing it seems. My DH is the same, He's getting better at wiping the surfaces, but doesn't do them properly, or do them all.

Jumpers268 · 09/03/2021 16:10

Yeah I always clean down the work surfaces after doing the dishes. Also, if it helps I've got a dishwasher and when he fills it he doesn't clean the surfaces and when he empties it he just puts all the dishes on the draining board for me to put away. So very helpful.

tashac89 · 09/03/2021 16:20

All the same job. Otherwise there'll be crumbs or random bits from the dirty dishes all over the side. DH thinks they're separate jobs too. Or did until I asked if he could talk to his boss to figure out if its just housework he's oblivious too or a genuine problem.

Chouetted · 09/03/2021 16:32

I think they're different jobs. Washing up needs done as frequently as you eat, so likely to be three times a day (or more) but the counters and table can hold out much longer.

Likewise, I only clean my draining board when it looks dirty. The only thing that ever touches it is the feet of the dishrack - and I'm pretty sure that can cope with a bit of soap scum. Why make work for myself?

lanthanum · 09/03/2021 16:37

I do the work surfaces at the same time as the washing up and loading the dishwasher, but I wouldn't expect other members of my family to do so unless I specified that.
But then, when I delegated cleaning the bath to DH because it does my back in, I discovered that he didn't think that included the taps - so perhaps I'm just aware of the need to be very specific!

Atalune · 09/03/2021 16:40

Same job.

Very poor form not to complete the circuit of kitchen clean down.

SassenachWitch · 09/03/2021 16:47

Hmm, does he leave the dirty dishwater in the bowl by any chance too?

I wash up, wipe sides, hob, kettle, empty bowl and clean the sink, P washes up, fetches hands from bowl, uses my clean tea towel to dry his hands, then walks away, leaving the dirty water in the bowl.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 09/03/2021 16:50

Different jobs.
One is “washing up”.
The other is “washing up and cleaning the kitchen”.

That doesn’t mean he can’t do both though.

BlueberryPancake21 · 09/03/2021 16:52

I have no particular view on whether they are part of the same job. If I've cooked DH cleans the kitchen (all of it) - he can do that via whatever process he chooses! He does often seem to do these things separately which I think is inefficient but if he wants to waste his own time that's up to him.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 09/03/2021 16:55

It's definitely the same job in our house, but we've got a tiny kitchen so doing the counters takes about 30 seconds extra.

I don't clean the table every time but we don't have DC so it doesn't really get anything spilled on it.

Akire · 09/03/2021 16:55

It’s the same job because you are stood within a few steps of the thing that need wiping with a wet cloth in your hand.

TheCovidHalfStone · 09/03/2021 16:55

Absolutely part of the same job of clearing up after a meal.
