To dislike the word ‘nope’?

I really dislike the use of ‘Nope!’, especially as a one word answer. To me it feels more dismissive than a straightforward no. Anyone else?

YANBU. Don’t like “yep” either.

VerityWibbleWobble · 09/03/2021 10:11

Yep YABU and nope it doesn't bother me.

angieloumc · 09/03/2021 10:22

I agree, I don't like nope or yep. I've a Facebook friend who also uses nup, yup and yip too. Awful.

HappydaysArehere · 09/03/2021 10:26

Yep I don’t like nope.

womanity · 09/03/2021 10:27

It’s dismissive and meant to be. So is yep. Love them. So Yep, YABU.

Lynora · 09/03/2021 10:28

Nah, I don't have a problem with nope.

I think that’s kind of the point...

RonObvious · 09/03/2021 10:31

I love nope! It always reminds me of the “nope” from exploding kittens. Sometimes tempted to use those cards in my day to day life.

Popcornbetty · 09/03/2021 10:32

Nope it doesn't bother me, i actually quite like it especially in reponse to a daft question..."errr nope!"

RonObvious · 09/03/2021 10:32

*nope card

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2021 10:33

Love 'nope' it says so much more than 'no'. When parenting teenagers it's brilliant.

RunHobbitRun · 09/03/2021 10:38

YABU, it fits perfectly as a dismissive "no" to something that shouldn't be asked.

E.g. "Can you give me £100 so I can get drunk?" "Nope"

Quite clearly letting the person know that not only do they have a negative response, but it's one dripping with dismissal.

sonnysunshine · 09/03/2021 10:41

I agree with the teens thing. It is also a bit like an absolute no. When I mean "no fucking chance" I use nope as a slightly less aggressive response.

Yes-perfect for those stupid teenage questions. Grin Can you run me to Maccys etc...

Absolutely this, also agree with pp on "Yep" as a reply. I find it irritatingly passive aggressive. I have one colleague who is known for her passive aggressiveness who uses "Yep" and "Nope" ugh.

I shouldn't let it bother me but it does!

Knitterbabe · 09/03/2021 11:12

It’s more the use where a dismissive reply isn’t called for, really, that annoys me.

OP posts:
ChameleonClara · 09/03/2021 11:14

It is just light language. It honestly annoys you?

Somethingsnappy · 09/03/2021 11:18

@VerityWibbleWobble.... Narp!

Knitterbabe · 09/03/2021 11:19

Well, yes.
If I ask ‘Did you watch X last night?’, and the reply is ‘Nope!’, I feel the respondent is implying something other than ‘No, was it interesting?’.

OP posts:
MereDintofPandiculation · 09/03/2021 11:27

"Nope" seems it should be followed by "Not going to happen". It's unnecessarily definite. It's implying you are not going to take "no" for an answer.

MyLittleOrangutan · 09/03/2021 11:30

Yep YABU, "No" sounds brash to me, like you're pissed off.

Chanjer · 09/03/2021 11:31

Yeah but nah
