Why is this? Private dentists are available - the NHS one is closed.
I understand for a while during the Spring but now it is still closed

Mine reopened in january. NE Lincs. Dds waiting list for the orthodontist is still 4 years though. Our dentist is going to see if he can do anything to ease her pain but says his hands are tied now shes been referred.

It;s down to the individual practice.
I saw mine in December, at the start of whatever version of Lockdown this is, to replace an ancient filling that had fallen out; I think it was a week or so to wait for an appointment.
They initially said they were doing private only, other than emergency work. Then when there they charged me the NHS rate and did it as NHS (the cost of private turned out only to be about £5 more anyway).
A couple of weeks ago the same filling pinged out, they offered me an appointment a couple of working days after my email. (and didn't charge me)

I did call around other local NHS dentists when mine first said they weren't doing NHS - a mix of not open/private only/not registering new NHS patients/long waiting lists.

Im in the SW and all 3 of the family currently at home have been to our NHS dentist in the past couple of months. No routine check ups for open for treatments.

Devon here - NHS Dentists services here either been nonexistent or poor provision even before covid. Now it's even worse. Only got a check up for DS by paying for it.

I haven't had one for over a year except i finally got my teeth descaled last month after paying for it a year ago! Because i realized the Dentists weren't interested in prevention - just mainly extractions (pre Covid) as there were plenty on the waiting list once they had pulled all a patient's teeth out.

NW England here. NHS dentists are as rare as hen's teeth. Mine hasn't seen me since mid 2019 and hasn't been doing appointments since March 2020...
