Frustrated456 · 08/03/2021 14:27

Really angry to see that driving tests have been cancelled and rather be starting on 12th April it is now 22 April so that means bloody driving test cancelled. What the hell DVSA.

It's hardly a matter of a few days. It takes months to reschedule a test, and the more people needing to reschedule, the longer the gap becomes. DD was ready to take her practical test last April. It hasn't been possible to sit it at all yet. The theory test is only valid for two years; there will be a backlog of people waiting to sit that as well. At this rate she'll be at university before she gets the chance to even take a test.

LimitIsUp · 08/03/2021 16:15

My dd's has been cancelled twice, one cancellation during November 'semi lockdown' and one cancelled in Feb

LimitIsUp · 08/03/2021 16:17

I don't know how practical it is but I do think the Government should be telling test centres to plan to open and offer tests 7 days per week for a couple of months - such a huge backlog at the moment

Rosieposy89 · 08/03/2021 16:20

I sympathise. I live in a rural area with poor public transport so these delays will have serious implications for jobs etc. Govt should extend the theory test validity and offer funding to deal with this.
@BigWoollyJumpers I completely agree with you. This age group have missed once in a lifetime exams, events and milestones and will never get those back.
Still, at least they haven't been dying in huge numbers.

lanthanum · 08/03/2021 16:25

It's presumably going to be supply of examiners which is the restricting factor; you can't just expect the existing ones to work 7 days a week.

I wonder whether they could consider employing some experienced driving instructors (or recently retired driving instructors) to help out. Presumably any experienced driving instructor has a reasonably good idea of the standards. My driving instructor has retired fairly recently, but I would guess that he might well be willing to do a couple of days a week.

LimitIsUp · 08/03/2021 16:32

Did I say I was expecting existing examiners to work 7 days per week?

Full timers could work a few hours extra in the short term.
Part timers could be encouraged to work extra shifts in the short term.
And yes, I had considered the recently retired.
Where there is a will there is a way

LimitIsUp · 08/03/2021 16:33

And I agree with 'upskilling' instructors to examine too

BigPaperBag · 08/03/2021 16:35

Is it just being cancelled week by week? DS has got his on 16th (maybe 13th) May. Hope it goes ahead!

LimitIsUp · 08/03/2021 16:38

I would have thought anything after 12 April will be reasonably safe. I can't really see the timetable for the 'unlocking' of lockdown being stalled given the pace of the vaccine rollout

peak2021 · 08/03/2021 16:41

@LimitIsUp @lanthanum whilst you cannot expect examiners to work 7 days a week, having some come out of retirement could make a difference. Better than just doing the Ryanair/BT cop-out excuse of Covid 19 and doing nothing to minimise the impact.

As you say, where there is a will.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 08/03/2021 16:41

The government have said no practical tests till April 22nd

Proper made me laugh. A global panini sounds fab.
sunflowersandbuttercups · 08/03/2021 16:45

It's nice to see MN so full of empathy this afternoon Hmm

Yes, we all know we're in a global pandemic, that doesn't mean people aren't allowed to be pissed off when their plans are repeatedly cancelled on them.

LimitIsUp · 08/03/2021 16:47

Ah, I had wrongly assumed it was April 12 since I think dd's instructor told me she would be restarting then
TheGoodEnoughWife · 08/03/2021 16:49

Lessons and theory tests from 12th April. Practical tests from 22nd April.

It is frustrating OP. I hope these dates ^ don't get revised again. They will be confirmed 5th April.

WaltzesWithSnobs · 08/03/2021 16:49

I paid for my test in July 2020. No date yet.

BrumBoo · 08/03/2021 16:52

I feel you @Frustrated456. Was in the same situation last year, my first test was one of the very first cancelle due to Covid. My advice is to try and get into the booking service very early in the morning. I did last year, and managed to rebook my test ASAP (and luckily passed, otherwise I may well still be waiting). Best of luck!

I don’t think some people understand how absolutely gutting it is, I understand OP.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 08/03/2021 16:55

Still, at least they haven't been dying in huge numbers

Oh piss off.

People are allowed to be pissed off with things.
Must no one ever moan or feel aggrieved about anything because people die?

Spoiler alert... People are always dying.

Oh do get off your high horse @EveningOverRooftops!!!

This isn't just about convenience for a lot of people!
Can you really not understand the impact of not being able to drive could have on getting specific jobs ect? Are you that hard of thinking?

Dobbyafreeelf · 08/03/2021 17:01

Sorry @EveningOverRooftops that was supposed to be for @NeverTrustaRabbit!!!!

Stuff that really matters like not being able to have safe transport with your family for a year, or access many available jobs? Have some imagination, it's been a year and not days, and the backlog will mean many more months of waiting to come. Could be another year or more for people who have to rebook theory tests first. Many learners are adults who need to drive and have spent huge amounts to take lessons for tests that have fallen through, and who have missed out on jobs, not just 17 year olds who want to see friends.

Dreamingofkfc · 08/03/2021 17:18

I feel your pain! Mine has been rescheduled 3 times and now my theory will run out before I get to do my test so another added expense
