To be bored of International Women’s Day?

I suspect the answer will be a resounding yes.

I totally appreciate women have overcome suppression etc and I’m absolutely proud and immensely grateful for the sacrifices my fellow women have made in the past to allow myself and others to be where we are today, but I just feel bored by all the constant ‘Who run the world, girls’ ‘Shoutout to all my fellow queens’ etc posts that I’ve been bombarded with on various social media platforms this morning.

Why do we need a ‘special day’? It just feels a bit patronising and unnecessary, added to that, some of the women sharing this stuff are some of the cattiest, misogynistic women I know. They’re okay to empower other women today when it’s popular.

All in all I just find it totally unnecessary. Yay, we’re women aren’t we great, woohoo Hmm

@sugarfreeblitz here are two women run organisations in Kolkata India working in red light areas with women and children providing alternative employment and education and training. I have visited both of them. During the pandemic they have been helping with food distribution but now returning to core programmes.

Re IWD . It is an opportunity to focus on women’s needs at a time when we appear to be losing ground in the West. When things we took for granted are being removed . When women’s fair representation is now taken over by men claiming they ARE us. In the west as in the rest of the world male violence and abuse is the tool used to keep us in our place . Femicide is rising and funding is being reduced. Of course we have to focus, raise awareness, fundraise and support each other in such a time of crisis. Our energy is being sapped by the misogyny we encounter on a day to day basis but we keep going, day after day, year after year. T shirts are being sold to support all sorts of causes for women. There is always crowdfunding to be done.
