Has anyone experienced it?
I’m currently sending my head backwards and forwards because I thought “Vimto” was “Vimpto”

There is an unproven theory that there are an infinite number of universes where every possibility is played out. In other words, there is a universe that is exactly the same as ours, except for the fact Mandela died in the 80s. Somehow, people's memories from one universe have been merged with our own

I love this theory, even though I don't think it is true.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/03/2021 13:16

Oh, I see pp mentioned Christopher Plummer. I remember hearing a news report of his death, on the radio one morning, about 8-10 years ago. (Or I thought it was him). I was really surprised when he later took over a role from Kevin Spacey.

freakdechic · 08/03/2021 13:19

@HarrietSchulenberg

I was one of the many people who swore salt n vinegar crisp packets swapped colours with cheese n onion. Apparently they didn't.
Walkers did that no one else though
freakdechic · 08/03/2021 13:19

@SlothWithACloth

It used to be only walkers that had them switched then everyone else copied, I’m sure golden wonder salt n vinegar was blue and cheese onion was green.
Golden wonder still are. Are they not?
EmbarrassingAdmissions · 08/03/2021 13:20

Vimpto makes a lot of sense because of the way it's pronounced.

v - sound made with lower lip and upper teeth

you release this to make the 'i' sound

m - nasal sound made with both lips involved and lowered soft palate so air escapes through nose

you transition from this to the t sound - but as you are doing this, you raise your soft palate and release your lips - that slight delay and transitional sound is the same as when you pronounce 'p'

you go on to make the 't' (ridge near the front of the mouth) and 'o' sounds.

People mostly know it's Vimto but it's common for it to sound like 'Vimpto'. Similar transitional phenomenon for 'hampster' as it's the same places involved in making the sounds.

freakdechic · 08/03/2021 13:20

@OhWhyNot

Golden Wonder cheese and onion are in the correct colour packets and that’s green. And they used to be more widely sold. Had a pack recently they are delicious very strong in flavour
Agree, golden wonder beats walkers any day

Shock

I remember that too. Although come to think of it, it might be that growing up, Walkers crisps were not a thing - Smiths were the predominant brand. Then Walkers appeared out of nowhere and completely overtook Smiths. Walkers had green packs for salt and vinegar to Smiths' blue, and Walkers had blue packs for cheese and onion to Smiths' green.

That would explain it.

freakdechic · 08/03/2021 13:24

Walkers definitely changed the colours around, golden wonder and McCoy's (that I can think of right now) have the correct colours. C&O - green, S&V - blue.

Walkers are wrong 😑

wellthatsunusual · 08/03/2021 13:24

Golden Wonder is now owned by Tayto, for anyone who is a fan of crisp related trivia.

And on that note, I was raised with cheese and onion being in a yellow packet so both green and blue seem wrong to me 😁

Oh my god. I thought that too!!!

Please tell us why you think Walkers don't know what colour their packaging used to be, but you do? And provide one single picture of them the way you think they were?

In another universe somewhere, you do.

@dennispennis. That photo is from The BBC series "Back In Time for the Coner Shop. They were props specially made for the series, not actual Walkers' packaging.

That photo is discussed here. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3860157-Walkers-cheese-and-onion-were-green

SoSaidTheLlama · 08/03/2021 13:32

Corner shop sorry.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 08/03/2021 13:32

Don’t know if this has already been mentioned but there is a whole podcast about this called The Walkers Switch. They even managed to get Gary Linikers opinion on in it. He says Walkers are lying!

Wow. Maybe they didn't. I'm stunned lol
Snorkelface · 08/03/2021 13:32

Bob Geldof infamously saying 'Give us your f*ckin' money!' during Live Aid.

Never said it.

He said 'F*ck the address, go to the phone number'

RoyalCorgi · 08/03/2021 13:33

It's the influence of the internet and social media. It wasn't a thing 30-40 years ago because a)people weren't as bloody daft then and b) people weren't so self-absorbed then and c) they didn't witter about this nonsense on the internet with other daft self absorbed people.

I think I'm going to have this printed out and pinned above my desk.l

NotSorry · 08/03/2021 13:37

We haven't said DYB DYB DYB, DOB DOB DOB in Cub Scouts for more than 50 years (since 1967 to be precise), yet people swear they remember saying it when they find out I am a Cub Scout Leader (and quote it at me Hmm)

So unless they are over 60 years old, they didn't say it (and it was only for Cubs, never for Scouts)

Confusedandshaken · 08/03/2021 13:38

@MaryGubbins

I was surprised when Ronnie Barker died, about 5 years after I was sure he’d died.

Husband recalls a different ending to the notebook and spent hours googling trying to convince me there was an alternative.

And I’d pronounce Vimto, vimpto but not spell it like that.

Many years ago an ex BF and I went to a screening of the film Pretty in Pink in `Leicester Square. It was an excellent deal. We saw a new movie for free with a goody bag of snacks thrown in. We were young and broke so we were thrilled. In return we had to complete a questionnaire about the film. We both wrote than we were unhappy with the ending and thought the heroine had ended up with the wrong guy. Imagine my surprise when I watched the movie on tv with DC about 20 years later and in that version she ended up with the right guy! It made me unreasonably happy.
