to send my sons back to school without a haircut

Sons had proper haircuts days before the barbers closed as I suspected lockdown 3 was coming. Normally they would have had haircuts in February half term but.....yeah.

Anyway fast forward to now. Facebook/whatsapp is full of friends showing off their home haircut efforts with scissors and/or clippers. Apparently my two will be the only ones in school tomorrow sporting the slightly shaggy look. They are not a 'mess' at all just slightly outgrown. I might need to take some scissors to them in the next few weeks (fringes will be in eyes soon) but I'm not keen as at this point the result is likely to be worse than how they previously look. In last lockdown one of them consented to having a go with the clippers and it wasn't too bad but he now prefers a floppier look that I dare not try to do myself. For context, round here the vast majority of boys seem to have super short hair so I think mine will have the 'longest hair' when they go back tomorrow but is not 'long' or 'in their eyes' and is obviously perfectly clean. They are 5 and 7.

So YABU - get the clippers out today or
YANBU - it's the middle of a pandemic, the slightly shaggy look is fine.

I’m not cutting my sons hair, no way. They are both both very shaggy & will be until the hairdressers open!

MiaowMiaow99 · 07/03/2021 10:56

They won't be the only two trust me!

Ifailed · 07/03/2021 10:56

Ask your sons, it's their hair?

Parentpower20 · 07/03/2021 10:57

Either are equally acceptable. Mine are in school due to my job. I have cut my kids hair, but other children haven’t. The all look a bit of a mess tbh. My efforts are amateur! Either way will be fine. Don’t over think it.

Iwantacookie · 07/03/2021 10:57

Mine will also look unkempt. Theres no way I'm attempting it.
I cant cut lined paper straight never mind hair.

Borntohula · 07/03/2021 10:57

I used clippers on ds2's hair but only because it was getting in his eyes and he couldn't cope with it (ASD). Not attempting ds1's hair, he'll have to wait. Like you say, it would look worse if I did it.

sorry forgot this detail. They're fine with it as it is. If they wanted me to try and cut it I would.

Ask your sons what they want?

ineedaholidaynow · 07/03/2021 10:58

DS is going in shaggy, and school normally have a strict hair policy

Reinventinganna · 07/03/2021 10:58

My ds would rather go back looking a bit overgrown than my attempt at trimming.
He’s not into the super short clippers look.

Stellaris22 · 07/03/2021 10:58

My DD is returning with hair she decided to trim herself, luckily it's not terrible. If I try to fix it I'll make it worse, so waiting for hairdressers to open. I wouldn't worry.

Alreadyinmypyjamas · 07/03/2021 10:59

My son currently resembles Shaggy from Scooby Doo. There's no way I'm cutting it myself. We are waiting until April.

MuddleMoo · 07/03/2021 10:59

Ah cross-post. Leave it then. As long as they can see. They can always ask you to do it once they've been back if they want.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/03/2021 10:59

DS needed a haircut at the start of this lockdown, never mind now! He'll be going in with the shaggy look tomorrow.

TheKeatingFive · 07/03/2021 11:01

Of course it’s fine 😊

Kerberos · 07/03/2021 11:01

My 11 and 13 year olds are both refusing to let me near their hair. DS2 has hair down to his chin now as it was floppy to begin with. They're going back shaggy, and we'll fix it once the professionals open again.

OwlinaTree · 07/03/2021 11:01

My son has longish hair anyway, but it's past his shoulders now! I think he'll have to have a ponytail. I can't cut it it's really thick and I'd mess it up.

SycamoreGap · 07/03/2021 11:02

I attempted to cut DS3s hair in lockdown one - he wore a baseball cap for 3 months! There is no way he (or his brothers) would let me anywhere near them with clippers / scissors.

Symbion · 07/03/2021 11:03

5 and 7? They're fine. I'm only doing my son's today because he's in secondary and there's this horrible "fresh trim slap" culture if boys have a haircut over a weekend.

I have no idea what that means!!!!

Ive been working in school during lockdown. Everyone’s hair has gone a little bit wild! trust me, your boys wont stand out.

OcelotPanda · 07/03/2021 11:05

My son hasn’t had his hair cut, other than a wonky fringe trim, since last June when I used clippers on it (on the longest length setting). He won’t let me touch it. There’s some excellent mullet action going on there.

My daughter normally has short hair and I am hopeless at cutting it myself as it’s really hard. She’s currently willing to wait until the hairdressers reopen. I might have to try and do something with the front at some point but I’m hoping not.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/03/2021 11:07

You should see the state of dd2s hair...its not been cut since September. She cabt wait fir lockdown to end so my friend can come over and do it. Her hair is now down to her waist and a complete mess..

Oh well..

BrumBoo · 07/03/2021 11:07

I attempted my son's in last lockdown, and the results were absolutely awful. He has what I can only describe as 'Harry Potter hair' - it grows quickly, thickly and in every direction. I quite like the shaggy look on him though, at least he stands out from every other boy in his class who all have the same Grade 3 shave left slightly longer on top. Quite happy to wait for the barbers to open.

My younger one has my hair, it never grows and can go months without needing anything but a quick snip of the fringe.

Frazzled2207 · 07/03/2021 11:07

Right. Thanks for the reassurance. I shall carry on with sorting uniform and not worry about fitting in diy haircuts today.
