to send my sons back to school without a haircut

Sons had proper haircuts days before the barbers closed as I suspected lockdown 3 was coming. Normally they would have had haircuts in February half term but.....yeah.

Anyway fast forward to now. Facebook/whatsapp is full of friends showing off their home haircut efforts with scissors and/or clippers. Apparently my two will be the only ones in school tomorrow sporting the slightly shaggy look. They are not a 'mess' at all just slightly outgrown. I might need to take some scissors to them in the next few weeks (fringes will be in eyes soon) but I'm not keen as at this point the result is likely to be worse than how they previously look. In last lockdown one of them consented to having a go with the clippers and it wasn't too bad but he now prefers a floppier look that I dare not try to do myself. For context, round here the vast majority of boys seem to have super short hair so I think mine will have the 'longest hair' when they go back tomorrow but is not 'long' or 'in their eyes' and is obviously perfectly clean. They are 5 and 7.

So YABU - get the clippers out today or
YANBU - it's the middle of a pandemic, the slightly shaggy look is fine.

Although I suspect that some schools may kick off about this. I would hope that the vast majority would be sensible.

Besides there are more important things to worry about.

Don’t do it! I gave my 12 year old a home haircut during lockdown 1.0 and accidentally used the wrong side of the clippers, had to take the full lot off and he looked terrible! He had a cut the day the barbers closed, it’s not looking terrible yet. My 4 year old on the other hand has hair in his eyes, I’ve told him he’ll need a hairband soon 🤣

If a school kicks off it'll be a brilliant laugh for the whole country. I can see it now - Sad face article spectacular! Child sent home for haircut- parents have scissorphobia or such.

Neither me or my 9yr old daughter has had a hair cut for over a year now, we're both starting to resemble Cousin It, but she can tie it back for school! My 7yr old son is looking very fluffy at the moment but I'm just going to leave it until the Barbers is open again. He did get his hair cut by Granddad with the clippers back in the first lockdown but it wasn't great, he had lots of longer hairs left around his ears and back of the neck! He went to the Barbers when they were open before he went back to school last september and that was it.

fripp last time dds school actually went so far as to request black or navy masks Hmm at a time where it was a struggle to get any kind if mask really amd certainly wasn't impressed with the idea it could result in nore uptake if using disposable masks. Because even 2 a day fir 1500 students fir 5 days a week would be Shock in the littering/land fill

My boys are in school. Their TA thinks their shaggy hair makes them look cute.

Rollmopsrule · 07/03/2021 11:59

No way would I shave my dc hair. Ds is going back shaggy which is his choice. I suppose it depends what type of hair they have and their own opinion on the matter.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/03/2021 12:30

DS hasn't had a haircut since before Christmas. Luckily he had it cut very short (grade 1) so it's not too long yet but I'm not attempting to cut it myself. April isn't too far away! Grin

Ds5 has very shaggy thick hair anyway. We agreed at start of this lockdown i would use the clippers to take it off as by the time he started school again it would be the ideal length. About to start school and although shorter than it usually is he looks quite smart and i don't have to stress about styling it either

My DH cut DS’s hair the other day - it was getting so long it was nearly in his eyes. He did a pretty good job of the back and sides with clippers but it’s a bit wonky at the front where he did it with scissors, DS did keep wriggling though! Personally I prefer DS with his hair shorter (he’s only just turned 5 and doesn’t have his own opinions on his hair yet) so I’m glad he looks tidier even if it is a bit wonky! A number of friends have given their DSs a grade 4 all over which is easy but they do look a bit shorn bless them.
