In not wanting a tree house overlooking my garden

NC as could be outing! One of my neighbour's has a garden that backs on to the bottom of my garden. No problem with that of course and there's a fence for privacy. They have decided to build an 8 foot structure though, so their children can access the tree to 'hang out' in the very broad branches. It now feels like an observation tower as the tree is right on the boundary so looks over my whole garden and into my kitchen and childrens' bedrooms. WIBU to ask them to remove the platform and therefore access to to tree?

Bonfires, smokey bbqs, sprinklers, bee hives, fire pits, naked jacuzzis, large groups of friends smoking and swearing - I’d have so many plans for the summer!

I’d approach the thoughtless neighbours to suggest they help fund something to help screen your garden from their pesky kids.

SilverBirchWithout · 05/03/2021 20:08

I suspect when the novelty has warn off the kids will not use it much.

TheyIsMyFamily · 05/03/2021 20:11

@Isthisallowed

Their garden is over an acre but mine is only tiny🙁
I would gently point this out, too, when you go to talk to them. Their children have many options that don't impinge on your or other neighbors' privacy; ask them to pick one of those options.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would be happy with the prospect of a summer of young teens socialising 8ft up a tree that overlooks their home and garden.

Isthisallowed · 05/03/2021 20:15

I can't really do anything to enjoy their enjoyment or peace in their home and I wouldn't want to. Anything like that would impact on my other neighbours who all seem really nice. I think I will just pop round and hope for the best.

Exactly! I work with children and have teenagers myself, love spending time with other peoples children, but would I love to have them watching me whilst I'm in my garden?

No chance!!

sbhydrogen · 05/03/2021 20:20

The neighbours have done nothing wrong here. I live in a terraced house, and all gardens are overlooked where I live.

There's a difference between a house that overlooks a garden and kids/teenagers essentially sitting on your fence peering in. I'd absolutely hate the latter.

sbhydrogen · 05/03/2021 20:21

Popping round is definitely the way to go!

HedgeOwl · 05/03/2021 20:24

Go round and speak to them, might as well incase they haven’t realised as they’ll know it’s you anyway if it’s reported. As much as people are saying it’s just kids, I would absolutely hate if kids were sitting above my fence looking in! Just nope.

frogswimming · 05/03/2021 20:29

They'll get bored of it soon enough and realistically will only play in it for a short time each day. I think you're worrying over nothing.

SelkieQualia · 05/03/2021 20:41

Oh, don't be so miserable. They'll climb it for a few minutes a day.

Weirdwonders · 05/03/2021 20:43

YANBU. It’s bad manners on their part. It’s obviously rude to let your children impose on other people’s property in this way, regardless of whether it’s the only tree in the garden or not.

HidingFromDD · 05/03/2021 20:46

If it's a proper tree house, I'd ask that they add something which prevents them overlooking your garden. If it's just something which allows kids to climb I'd see how much of an issue it is, if they're permanently up there peering into the garden, I'd set up a sprinkler and turn it on for 15 mins every time before I went out

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 05/03/2021 20:46

I'd just put a note through explaining that it allows them to look into your bedroom and you're concerned that you've seen them a couple of times watching you and your husband having kinky daytime sex.

It'll be gone within the week.

BlueSoop · 05/03/2021 20:48

They need planning permission. Report to the council and they’ll be told to take it down.

Not really. All my neighbours at the back don’t have a garden, they have about six feet of yard with high outdoor steps to the upper flat. The steps, where they hang out, are above the height of my fence. Effectively they are sitting right on the fence. My garden is only 20ft.
NotFabulousDarling · 05/03/2021 20:49

I think you're worrying about nothing. Other people's kids don't care what you're doing in your house. That's not what they're climbing a tree for.

Isthisallowed · 05/03/2021 20:50

I think what makes it worse for me is that I only get the sun in the bottom 15 feet. I have a little chair their that was in the sun most of the day. Fingers crossed they'll lose interest.

TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe · 05/03/2021 20:51

Assuming you're in the UK, just get naked. They'll stare to begin with, but the parents will stop them once they find out they've been watching you naked.

If you're not in the UK, check the laws where you are first. In some countries you might find yourself in hot water.

Backtoschool101 · 05/03/2021 20:55

I dont think they will be interested in you OP. Unless their teens drinking or something then i think yabu and let kids be kids. They wont be up there all the time.

thinkful · 05/03/2021 20:57

How far is it from your house?

I'm a planning officer, i wouldn't approve an application for a tree house on a boundary, particularly if the distance to your rear elevation was under 20m.

Could you ask them to erect a screen for privacy? Would you have a concern on loss of outlook or that it's overbearing?

chiangmai · 05/03/2021 20:57

Did you not post on here before about this very issue. If I recall you had moved in and when buying you couldnt see the tree house. However having had some things in the garden removed you can now see it. You were going to go round and have a chat then or put something around the fence for privacy...?

Wrenna · 05/03/2021 21:00

Yanbu but they will scramble up there a few times and be done with it. If there is no platform it’s not going to be comfy at all, it’s one of those things that sound fun but will not actually get much use.

Isthisallowed · 05/03/2021 21:05

no. this is my first thread on this. Screening wouldn't impact my outlook so that would be best if the kids use it alot.

Fuckingcrustybread · 05/03/2021 21:10

Hire a man with a digger, get him to dig a trench 1metre from the fence, 600 wide and 2 metres deep, that'll solve the problem.
