Joggers should be banned from paths and pavements

As a car driver I find that the occasional cyclist breaks highway codes, cycles dangerously, or cycles without care and consideration. Key word being occasional, so no biggie. Just like how the occasional car diver is a .

But as a pedestrian going for a stroll in the park, the number of rude, selfish, careless and aggressive joggers i've seen is ridiculous high.

I see a jogger coming towards me, I walk to the side/edge of the path, but joggers always decide to keep running straight down the middle....

Similar to the above, joggers not keep a safe distance, and actually brushing past me.

And lastly, the worst offenders, joggers running side by side taking up the whole path, coming towards me, and giving me looks as if im supposed to jump out the way and off the path. ***

I honestly think legislation should be brought in to ban jogging on paths and pavements. Restricting joggers to grassland/cross country, outdoor tracks, private land, and the gym. The same way that cycling isnt permitted on pavements.

You forgot to use the essential anti-runner phrase "huffing and puffing all over me," OP. Hmm

As of now, 85% of Mumsnet thinks it's ok to be rude, selfish and aggressive in public. Wow.

1forAll74 · 05/03/2021 15:44

Joggers and serious runners always seem to run on the pavements here, and seem to need you to step aside when approaching them, to just step in the road, when cars are going past.

This is off topic really, but a few weeks ago, I came across two joggers, jogging together, they were both very over weight, and huffing and puffing, after a while, they both stopped by a farm gate, and both lit up cigarettes whilst having a break, to catch their breath !

Hmm
Shelovesamystery · 05/03/2021 15:45

As a jogger, I would like to see groups of people who won't walk single file to let me pass and instead expect me to either run out in to the road or run on muddy grass so that they can carry on walking 2 or 3 abreast banned from public paths and pavements. Thank you.

I've stopped moving off the path for them now and just squeeze past them brushing against their shoulders and panting loudly.

HotChoc10 · 05/03/2021 15:45

Sounds like you should just stay home to me, and keep out of their way.

Spidder · 05/03/2021 15:45

Gyms are shut. And treadmills are shit.

Some of us only HAVE pavements. I can't run up the woods in the evenings, or alone, cos it's not safe.

Cyclists cycle on the pavements round here.

Does this mean walkers should stay off the cycle paths?

Cameleongirl · 05/03/2021 15:45

I live in a city and we have the opposite problem with runners- they prefer to run in the cycle lane or the road than on the pavement. It’s terrifying when someone’s running ( not always in a straight line) on a city street, they could so easily be hit. Not sure what cyclists are supposed to do either if a runner’s in their cycle lane - swerve out into the traffic, I suppose.

As PP’s have said, it’s more about consideration for other pavement/road users than anything else. We’re all sharing the space.

emsiewill · 05/03/2021 15:45

@VettiyaIruken

Gyms can be expensive, tracks are few and far between and cross country carries its own hazards - safety, terrain etc.

What's needed is for people to be more considerate of others. Walkers, joggers, horse riders, cyclists, car drivers... All of us. Just be mindful of other users of the same space.

This! This 100%. I am a walker and a runner. I try and be considerate to other people no matter how fast I am going. Many people offer the same consideration; we all move out of each other's way, smile, say "thank you" and get on with our day.

Some people are dicks and don't move, either because they aren't aware of their surroundings and don't think to move, or they are too self absorbed and don't care about others.

At the end of the day, the best way to behave is to "do as you would be done by" - treat others as you would like to be treated and don't dwell on the people who don't do the same. You'll just end up with a headache.

Moomin12345 · 05/03/2021 15:46

I think you should be banned on pavements.

Or, they think that the poster is unreasonable to suggest jogging should be banned on paths and pavements.
Aimee1987 · 05/03/2021 15:46

@PaleFox

I'm surprised to hear that you've found this. IME cyclists are much more likely to be rude and inconsiderate than joggers.

@LolaSmiles

NOOOO people can't just be less dickish, we have to ban every person from doing anything in case one other person doing it someone else upsets a MN poster 😂

Ban everyone, except cars and people who have started going out for walks during lockdown but will probably stop as soon as their usual interests and activities open up again.

Nah, car drivers can be dicks too. And new walkers. Bam everyone. No one leave their house.
Hey,that sounds familiar....
rawalpindithelabrador · 05/03/2021 15:47

Haahaa. Stupid people should be banned from everywhere.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/03/2021 15:47

I've stopped running in my usual outdoor area because of all the dickish social distanced walkers. None of whom were there a year ago.

If you want to go for a walk with your mate and one of you is on one side of the path and the other on the other (or worse, an entire extended family across the path) I have nowhere to go. SINGLE FUCKING FILE. Just while we pass each other. I do it with my running buddies.

However the vast majority of the walkers are lovely, as are the runners. Only people who hate us call us joggers. One group of walkers even looked for me when they saw my dog and not me one Saturday. They see me every Saturday and normally the dog is stuck to me. Very sweet of them.

People can coexist, and banning people from things really isn't the way to elicit good behaviour.

lazylinguist · 05/03/2021 15:47

I don't find runners get in the way any more than walkers (and fwiw I am a keen walker as well as an occasional runner). And it's more common to see people walking in groups than running in groups imo. Plus runners tend to get out of the way more quickly, unlike groups of people walking and so busy chatting that they don't notice they are in the way.

I drive on lots of single track country roads, and runners usually seem much more aware of cars approaching, whereas walkers often dawdle down the middle of the road chatting and don't even notice cars. Or fail to get their dogs out of the way.

No, 83% think op is ridiculous.
MargaretThursday · 05/03/2021 15:48

Oh I think we need rules for pavements now.

Rules against:
Walking too slow
Having a large pram
Walking in a group of more than 2
Stopping to talk
Sneezing
Carrying big bags
Being too old
Wearing dark glasses
Having a hat on backwards
Being male

Any other suggestions? Grin

Escapetab · 05/03/2021 15:48

I have no issue with runners in general. I do have an issue with the runners and the (far more numerous) bastard cyclists who seem to think that their use of the towpath is just SO much more important, because they're exercising, than my right to walk down it. Apparently a barked order should be sufficient for anyone in front of them to squeeze right onto the grass or wait to go under a bridge until they've pushed in front. Fuck off mate, you can get down and go round if you're in such a hurry. Or just wait.

joystir59 · 05/03/2021 15:49

I'd ban cycling except on cycle paths.

murbblurb · 05/03/2021 15:49

puzzles me a bit how when you see a picture of a park, nobody is walking on the grass. Everyone is crammed on to the same footpath. is everyone wearing silly shoes?

zzzooomwatcher · 05/03/2021 15:49

Tbh much better now than pre-pandemic. Most seem to give some thought to social distancing. In the past world I had aggro runners basically shoving me off the pavement into oncoming traffic

thisnthat · 05/03/2021 15:49

I can’t even begin with how over the top you are being.
I’ll jog where I like, thanks. Whilst being considerate and sharing nicely. Just like at least 90% of the other path users (walkers/runners/family groups) I encounter. There are always an inconsiderate few from all groups and I’m not going to let them spoil my day.

Newpotplants · 05/03/2021 15:49

Problem is, the rude joggers tend to be quite aggressive looking / demeanour as well...I strongly suspect id get run over / pushed out the way if I didnt hurry up to move aside.

Oh don't be so bloody ridiculous

SquirtleSquad · 05/03/2021 15:49

What about power walkers? Brisk walkers? What exactly is your pace preference here? I need to know the parameters of your plan here to judge exactly how much of a cunt you sound.
