Joggers should be banned from paths and pavements

As a car driver I find that the occasional cyclist breaks highway codes, cycles dangerously, or cycles without care and consideration. Key word being occasional, so no biggie. Just like how the occasional car diver is a .

But as a pedestrian going for a stroll in the park, the number of rude, selfish, careless and aggressive joggers i've seen is ridiculous high.

I see a jogger coming towards me, I walk to the side/edge of the path, but joggers always decide to keep running straight down the middle....

Similar to the above, joggers not keep a safe distance, and actually brushing past me.

And lastly, the worst offenders, joggers running side by side taking up the whole path, coming towards me, and giving me looks as if im supposed to jump out the way and off the path. ***

I honestly think legislation should be brought in to ban jogging on paths and pavements. Restricting joggers to grassland/cross country, outdoor tracks, private land, and the gym. The same way that cycling isnt permitted on pavements.

AIBU?

What if it were made illegal and you were walking along the pavement, but suddenly realised you were late for something and needed to run? Or power walk? Wink

RomeWasBuiltInADay · 05/03/2021 17:36

Why do people always want things banned. Then again, I think chubby men with hairy arses should be banned from wearing low slung trousers but I suppose as long as they don't also attempt to jog , I'll just avert my eyes. Mumsnet should have a "ban it" board.

Jenala · 05/03/2021 17:37

Everyone is saying "joggers" but in my experience it's always the Very Important Men in super short running shorts that act like dicks when running. Same as the odd shitty cyclist is always a Very Important Man in lycra. With a GoPro attached to his helmet.

Perhaps wealthy men with flabby guts and 'hobbies' should be made to self isolate for the foreseeable. Driving and walking might be betterfor everyone else Grin

BalancedIndividual · 05/03/2021 17:37

@DuzzyFuck

Of course you're being unreasonable OP, and frankly an idiot.

There actually is a running track a drive away from me. I run up to 13 miles at a time, do you suggest I go round and round it 53 times, assuming I could find a full 2 hour period that it wasn't being used by others? Hmm

Lucky you that you can a) afford a gym and b) they're open near you.

Perhaps if you took your walking cross-country (far safer to walk over uneven ground than to run after all) then the runners in your park wouldn't be a problem.

Also you're being doubly unreasonable to use the term 'joggers'. If they're moving faster than walking speed, they're running. Runners.

Can anyone recommend good cross country walks near Croydon? (For post COVID)

Boxhill was my usual place for walks (pre lockdown), but the walks seem limited to paths, opposed to actually cross country.

If anyone has any recommendations of open /cross country walks near croydon/sutton/etc it would be much appreciated! Smile

But also, yabu OP, obviously. As am I.

museumum · 05/03/2021 17:39

I jog alone. 90% of walkers on the paths I use are in at least groups of two - do they go single file to pass me? Do they hell!
However I’m not about to start calling for a ban on walking.

Mysterian · 05/03/2021 17:39

And unicyclists. They're...unsettling.

Sorry, I should have included this in my opening post.

I haven't had this problem with ANY female runners yet. Its always been male runners/joggers.

(And before anyone says anything. Yes, women can also be inconsiderate with their prams etc, but thats a different topic!)

You can’t just ban people because you find them annoying.

ChnandlerBong · 05/03/2021 17:43

surely there are just so many more people jogging (and walking) at the moment that it's simply a temporary capacity issue?

Nothing to do except go for a walk or run with a mate so EVERYONE is doing it. (Physio locally completely booked up with newbie runners who've injured themselves...)

It's about everyone being thoughtful. And sharing the space we have. People doing a Piers Morgan is not helpful. Heard someone on the radio the other day saying she could feel a joggers breath next to her and that sometimes she just knew she breathed in the air that jogger had just breathed out Hmm

Take a deep breath OP (not of my newly exhaled joggers germs) and realise that this too will pass. This time next year jogger numbers will be back to normal, and you'll be far too busy at the gym to bother going for nearly so many walks to even remember you thought this was an issue....

Just wait until all outdoor smoking is banned Grin

Perhaps there should be a law which criminalises inconsiderate running and can be dealt with by a FPN issued by PCSO'S, PC's and park wardens

Or even, given everyone ambulating on the path has an equal right to be there, we could have apply that law to anyone on the path. No?

oil0W0lio · 05/03/2021 17:48

I am a runner, I go out of my way to be polite and to defer to other people using outdoor spaces, I understand your frustration when others are inconsiderate, I also come across rude people!
However I feel this speaks to the underlying problem:
(Maybe parks should start incorporating more tracks or jogging paths)
namely that provision for outdoor exercise is woefully inadequate, cyclists, Walkers, runners, dog walkers are all expected to share the same narrow tracks and pathways, the needs of these different groups are are incompatible but we all deserve to exercise outdoors and in a way which is enjoyable

Centaurpede · 05/03/2021 17:50

You are being ridiculous! How many people have private land to go jogging on?! And everyone shouldn't have to pay for a gym membership so that they can run on a treadmill...which isn't the same as outdoor running anyway. And joggers are not allowed to travel to countryside to jog now anyway. Get used to sharing public spaces or you'll have to somehow afford your own island or massive estate! 😁

Because smoking and running are comparable 🙄

MaddieElla · 05/03/2021 17:53

You're right, all "joggers" should stop at home and become a clinically obese, future drain on the NHS. Like most of the sedentary muppets on this thread.

Januaryissodull · 05/03/2021 17:54

I wish to god mumsnet would ban ridiculous, inflammatory posts like this.

You sound absolutely fucking mental op.

I'd never usually say anything like that on here op but you are fucking crazy talking about banning joggers.

islockdownoveryet · 05/03/2021 17:55

Just wait until all outdoor smoking is banned grin.

Yeah smoking / running it’s the same thing.
Beer gardens full of people running around and all those used water bottles discarded , disgusting.
Hmm

TheSockMonster · 05/03/2021 17:55

I think the problem is us Brits are a bit anarchic about how we use pavements and paths.

Most countries seem to have more defined rules about which side of a path/pavement to walk on and how to overtake and so forth.

As our paths and pavements get busier we may just need to get a bit more organised about how we use them.

Banning people with the possible exception of Very Important Men in Lycra, something I feel we could all get behind is not the answer.

MaddieElla · 05/03/2021 17:58

"I agree that some runners are selfish. And by that I mean they expect, for example, two adults two kids and a buggy to move off the pavement as they go hurtling past rather than them moving off"

Are you actually taking the piss with this?

Do the four of you and a buggy seriously take up the whole pavement, rather than walking single file or moving over, expect runners to run into a road with cars and then come on a forum and call runners selfish?

No one can be this thick.

Gobbeldegook · 05/03/2021 18:00

Noone should be banned. Everyone should, however, have basic manners and respect.
There are ignorant entitled cunts in every group of society. Don't be one.

MessAllOver · 05/03/2021 18:02

You generally can't walk single file with little children near busy roads as you need to hold their hands. So a parent walking with two under 5s is likely to take up a significant chunk of the pavement.

@BalancedIndividual there are loads of great cross country walks south of Croydon. Take a look at the All Trails app for ideas. Woldingham has some lovely walks. Titsy, Limpsfield, Happy Valley, riddlesdown, Banstead woods, Reigate fort and nearby woods. There's loads. But mind out - I run round some of thoseWink
