Wibu to go for a walk in the fog?

melononapear · 04/03/2021 15:51

I'm doing exercise at home but I'm frustrated at being stuck inside and want to go for a walk outside to clear my head and stretch my legs.

Trouble is, all the roads around me are fairly major and have no pavements. Even worse, it's foggy and visibility isn't great.

Would it be a stupid idea to risk going for a walk? I have a bright red coat and a hi vis cover for my backpack but I'm uneasy about road walking when the weather is like this. Or am I just being lazy and I should go anyway?

Why would you put yourself in danger like that especially when the thought of it is making you uneasy?

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/03/2021 16:01

I did yesterday, the dog had to be walked. Unless it was a real pea souper, of course.

melononapear · 04/03/2021 16:39

I guess I'm just wondering if it is a real hazard or if I'm just making excuses to myself and it'll be fine.

I do need to go to the local shop and no way to get there other than walking, not sure if I should risk it or put it off till tomorrow when it's hopefully less foggy!

Will you be able to see cars coming when you cross the road?

JackieTheFart · 04/03/2021 16:47

I wouldn’t. Walking in fog is pretty scary, and if there’s no pavements it’s actively dangerous.

melononapear · 04/03/2021 16:56

@CaptainMyCaptain I'll be able to see them as everyone seems to have their lights on. I'm just not sure they will see me but I do have my Hi vis stuff and a headtorch 😊

Not with no pavements, no.

rainbowsaway · 04/03/2021 17:05

I wouldn't. A few nights ago I took a different walking route to normal and unexpectedly ended up on a road with no pavement and no street lighting. Everytime a car came, I felt like I was doing something really stupid and too risky. You are relying on drivers spotting you in the fog and giving you enough space.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/03/2021 17:11

If there are no pavements and you don't have to go out then don't bother.

Forthis1 · 04/03/2021 17:45

What would you normally do? I take it you have left the house since living there.

melononapear · 04/03/2021 17:54

@Forthis1 normally I have transport but it's off the road at the moment 😞

I’m obviously tired as read the title as WIBU to go for a walk with a frog Blush

I was super excited to see what was coming

MrsDThomas · 04/03/2021 18:13

I live where there are no pavements. Cloud comes in quickly. I go out in all weather. If i relied on clear nights and brightness id hardly leave the house,

Hi viz and a torch and go

Shnuffles · 04/03/2021 18:20

If it's thick fog, I wouldn't risk it, personally. From the perspective of a moving vehicle, a pedestrian on the edge of the road can be difficult enough to see even without fog.

If it's not too thick, it might be okay, but I'd go with my gut on things like this. If I don't feel safe doing something, I generally avoid it.

MarySanderson · 04/03/2021 18:23

Will you/can you jump off the road when a car comes? If you're walking into traffic and have good wide grass verges then go for it. If you have steep verges/walls/fences then don't. Don't be on the tarmac when a car approaches and you'll be fine.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 04/03/2021 18:24

How foggy are we talking? How far can you see?

melononapear · 04/03/2021 18:32

@Sailawaysailaway haha now that I would love to do!

Yeah normally the road walking bit wouldn't bother me so much but there isn't really anywhere to escape to and in the fog it just feels a bit too risky.

I'm just going to wait till tomorrow, there's no streetlights and I'm definitely not doing it in the dark 😂

SpudsandGravy · 04/03/2021 18:55

Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me, OP - major roads, no pavement plus fog? No.....

Are there any safer walks that you could drive to a short distance away?

AuntieStella · 04/03/2021 19:13

In those conditions, you need more than hi-viz - you need lights (you can get all sorts of straps and vests with led lights)

Good call to wait until tomorrow!

If you feel the need to exercise, stick on a vid that lasts about the amount of time you would have gone out for

melononapear · 04/03/2021 19:32

@SpudsandGravy my transport is off the road at the moment 😞

It's also a factor of necessity, the shop is my closest place to get anything so I have no choice but to walk there!

I also misread the title but ended with a much more sinister scenario. I read the 'l' in walk as an 'n'. Shock
garlictwist · 04/03/2021 19:45

I can't imagine living somewhere where there's no pavements or safe places to walk - how do you manage normally?

melononapear · 04/03/2021 19:51

I didn't have a lot of choice in the matter as I had to leave my last place and couldn't find anywhere else affordable to go! Then Covid happened :/

Normally I have transport so it isn't too much of an issue.

A lot of places outside towns are like that. Just a narrow grass verge at the side of the road.
MrsDThomas · 04/03/2021 20:17

@garlictwist seriously?😂 are you scared of everything?

Living rurally you can’t be scared. I walk at night alone, torch in hand. Wind rain etc. And on a weekend i love noting more than a lonely quarry walk. Not everywhere has a rapist or murderer lurking.
