I am interested in getting myself a cat but cant believe what price people are asking between 200 and 800 for a mixed breed.

Rescue - ring them, their websites are barely ever updated. Smaller local rescue is best imho.

NotFabulousDarling · 03/03/2021 22:27

YABU not to go for a rescue first. I didn't even know people bred cats, there's so many strays out there who haven't been neutered.

Another couple of rescue mogs here, albeit several years apart.

We got our from cats protection league. 60 quid donation. He was chipped, neutered and had injections carried out by them. I ended up giving 100 quid.

Gosh, the last cat I had (10 years ago) was £18! Is that the price of them now?
Do look at rescues though if you don't mind not getting a tiny kitten. My brother rehomed a pair of 9 month old sisters which were advertised on Facebook for free. They're spoilt silly by my Dad whose home all day and by my brother who they rush to see when he gets home from work. And I'm quite proud to have taught one of them to sit on two feet and catch Dreamies when I visit every day 🐈‍⬛ ♥️

When we were looking recently the rescues near us (big and small) had been so overwhelmed with enquiries they weren’t even adding people to their waiting lists!

MissPessyMistic · 03/03/2021 22:41

Adopt don’t shop. Once lockdown ends there will be a tidal wave of animals being given up for adoption, so if you can’t find one now just hold tight.

We adopted our cat from Cats Protection, think it was £40 adoption fee. She was 4 years old. We gave them our info and they contacted us when they had one suitable. I think they match them to you to a certain extent. We're a quiet adult only household so perfect for our cat who is a little anxious and probably wouldn't do well with kids or other animals. She is very affectionate but nervous. I imagine they match more sociable cats to families. I wouldn't want to contribute to more cat breeding when there's so many cats need a home in rescues.

Pets are expensive. If you hesitate over spending £100-200 on a kitten, then you can’t comfortably afford to feed insure vaccinate pay each insurance excess when cat gets a bite wound for the billionth time etc etc. Not everyone is an ‘unscrupulous breeder’ some people love their kittens very much and want to know they’re going to a home that can afford to look after them well.

Have you asked on local farms? We got two of our kittens for £10 each off local farmers.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/03/2021 23:15

Dd paid £90 for hers, rehomed him from gumtree, (yes, I know).
He's absolutely gorgeous though.

Oh @70isaLimitNotaTarget
They are beautiful.
I have a wee black cat too, she has the biggest personality of all my three.

ShrikeAttack · 04/03/2021 10:43

Mine are rescue cats too, we got them at 10 weeks, they were found abandoned and were the only two of their litter that survived. A more delightful pair you will never meet!

They were from a small local rescue, I paid £50 each for jabs etc.
