I can only echo pp's, we got our 2 year old cat from Cats Protection towards the end of last year. We registered with all the local rescues and it took a little while to find one that was OK with smaller children but they found us the perfect cat. I think we paid around £75 for her and she was fully vaccinated, wormed, flea-treated, microchipped and temporarily insured. I could buy a kitten when there were so many beautiful cats in need of a home. Good luck with you search!

PattyPan · 03/03/2021 19:41

Yabu for not going to a rescue. More ethical and cheaper Smile

imjackieweaver · 03/03/2021 20:03

Rescue
You get a neutered, vaccinated cat for £60.

Clappingforjoy · 03/03/2021 20:23

I've been on rescue sites but they dont appear to be showing many cats available

look for local small rescues on Facebook as well as CP and RSPCA

MadameMinimes · 03/03/2021 20:29

I got mine from Blue Cross, they have centres around the country. In a month or two kitten season will get going and there will be more kittens available. Some centres don’t necessarily have all of the cats on their websites. A lot of the time they are quite understaffed and sometimes updating the website falls by the wayside so perhaps approach one and ask what they have at the moment. They might be willing to let you know when new cats come in too.

Clappingforjoy · 03/03/2021 20:41

Thanks all I am looking for a cat between 2 and 6 years old

There's a website called catchat.org which has a decent list of rescue centres

Justgivemeamoment · 03/03/2021 20:49

Ah need to do more research then !
The place I contacted doesnt allow families with kids under 6 to adopt but good to know there's hope.

I know someone wanting to rehome a beautiful 1 year old neutered female cat, depending on where you are in the country though obviously. As far as I know the cat is fully vaccinated and flea treated etc.

Midgeymoo12 · 03/03/2021 20:57

Be very cautious buying a kitten. We have previously had rescue cats but perhaps because of COVID we couldn’t get one last autumn. We bought two kittens and horrifically one died after 1 week then one after 6 weeks - likely from FIV or FELV contracted from the mother. Clearly the seller had not vaccinated or looked after the mother. Also. although the cats were adorable, in hindsight they were not 8 weeks old and were in poor condition - sticky eyes and mites in ears.

You need to try and work out if the person is genuine and caring, or just letting the cat breed to make money. Also check the kittens carefully - that their eyes and ears are clear, gums pink and that they weigh around 800g (for 8 weeks). Sadly we learned the hard way!

I agree best to take a rescue cat if available.

@Carolina24

Rescues are overflowing with kittens! Don’t pay an unscrupulous breeder who is contributing to the problem.

Kittens aren't advertised on most rescue websites as they go so quickly. So it's best to contact directly.

Also there are lots of smaller rescue centres you may not have heard of, aside from the big ones like Cats Protection etc. They also tend to have more sensible adoption rules when it comes to children. Go to www.catchat.org to find a full list in your area.

Beamur · 03/03/2021 21:00

I'd expect to pay £80 ish for a rescue. Which frankly is a complete bargain as they are usually neutered, chipped and have been vaccinated. It would cost you more than that to pay for those treatments.
I would avoid a private sale of a mixed breed. Most will be dodgy.
If you want a pedigree, do some research so you buy from someone who is an enthusiast and a hobby breeder who loves their cats. You're unlikely to pay much less than £500, cat should come in good health, older than a rescue kitten (11 or 12 weeks old is more common) insured, have had at least their first round of vaccinations and been health checked by a vet. In my experience they also come with some of the food they're on, litter they're used to and maybe some toys. A decent breeder will also stay in touch for a while to check that the kittens are ok. You will still have to pay for neutering although you should be asked if you intend to breed as otherwise they will be registered as a non breeding individual. The times I have bought pedigrees the breeders were keen to know what my intentions were with regards to the kittens. They also asked a lot of questions about their future home and our experience of looking after cats.

JaceLancs · 03/03/2021 21:11

I would expect to pay between £50 and £100 for a non pedigree through rescue or cat charity
I rehomed most recent Dcat for £150 but he had been micro chipped, neutered, had all vaccinations and flea and worm treated so I think a real bargain
Unfortunately we were unaware he had a genetic joint problem which appeared at around 9 months old and was not fully covered under my pet insurance
Thousands of pounds later I still adore him!

Numptywallice · 03/03/2021 21:47

You could try and local farms or stable, they often have lots of kittens. I got two last year this way. Get them young as they can be feral and hard to train

We bought a new cat last year and was also surprised at the price of a black moggy. Love our little fluff ball but at £150, apparently she was a bargain!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 03/03/2021 22:12

We got our latest one from Dd's school friend his cat had kittens and the Mum was looking for good homes, for free.
I've never paid for a cat ever. Two we got years ago from another Mom who was looking for good homes.
The cost is when you get to the vets, vaccinations, chipping, fixing, then ongoing care.

I paid £60 for my 4 year old rescue moggy, from a local rescue. Worth every penny!

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 03/03/2021 22:18

@GreenSlide

They're worth what people will pay for them. You could always hang out round the bins at your local KFC and nab one Wink
Back of the bins at KFC you say? Grin

(This is actually our 10 year old rescue we rehomed from CPL in October)

I will repeat what others have said rescue all the way! Do not line the pockets of the scumbag "breeders" with no concern for the welfare of the kittens or the mums.
Rescues are struggling at present as they are running on reduced numbers as well as being busy so they may be slower in replying.
Obviously the right cat for your home may not be available just yet so you may need to wait.
