To think that the BBC shouldn’t be playing music like this...

Radio 1 is currently playing a song by a 17 year old Australian boy called The Kid called ‘Without You.’

The main lyric in the chorus is ‘ Can't make a wife out of a ho.’

Apart from being ridiculous lyrics for a 17 year old to sign, AIBU to be shocked that the BBC are allowing such misogynistic and sexist music to be played?

Bluddy awful. Agreed. But we're only women so it's ok.

LApprentiSorcier · 03/03/2021 18:42

The song sounds like the worst kind of tripe but if you eliminated everything that was sexist/misogynistic from music there'd be a huge chunk gone.

Just change to a different station if you don't like what's being played.

user88899 · 03/03/2021 18:46

If the lyric was "can't turn a bro into a ho" it would be banned immediately. But as stated it's only offensive for women so all good!

cheerfulpanda · 03/03/2021 18:51

YABU

It’s a Top 10 song, and really popular on TikTok at the moment. Radio 1 plays popular music.

It’s hardly new, music is rife with misogyny and if you’d turned on Radio 1 at any other point in history there would be plenty of sexist material.

It’s not right, but you are being unreasonable to be shocked!

LApprentiSorcier · 03/03/2021 18:54

I'm old enough to remember Radio 1 banning 'Relax'. The commercial stations played it to death as a result and the ban probably added to the song's popularity.

peak2021 · 03/03/2021 18:55

The BBC employed Jimmy Savile for years.

So consideration and protection from harm to women and young girls is not high on their priorities.

HeartsAndClubs · 03/03/2021 18:58

Well, the other day I heard them playing some song with the n word in it. But it was no.3 in the charts so...

Unfortunately music is now full of vile lyrics, not just sexist/misogynist ones but swearing etc. Whatever happened to songs having a “radio edit”?

thepeopleversuswork · 03/03/2021 18:58

I mean... the BBC has been playing this fare for years. It's in the Top 40: hard to see why they should single out this one.

SimonJT · 03/03/2021 18:59

So do you want all radio edit versions of ‘explicit’ songs to be banned from radio?

As radio 1 only play the radio edit version, so you won’t be hearing the lyric “out of a ho” on radio 1 and neither will any other listeners.

Devlesko · 03/03/2021 19:01

YABU, we can't censor music.
Not my cup of tea, neither but it's popular music on Radio 1.
I remember the fuss about The sex Pistols and look at the poor 16 year old Motown singers and what they went through.

demelza82 · 03/03/2021 19:10

Pearl clutching and BBC bashing in one go - how refreshing.Confused

It's a TikTok song, that's why it's popular. I don't love it but it's no worse than any number of songs over the last few decades with regards to latent misogyny. Doesn't make it right but you clearly have an agenda. You're going to have a real shock if you head over to a streaming service or commercial radio stations Mary Whitehouse.

agapanthus1979 · 03/03/2021 19:19

Like a pp i don't necessarily agree with censoring music, but I agree with @user88899
Reminds me of Fairytale of New York: no body bats an eyelid at the use of the word 'slut', but 'faggot' sparks outrage.
Double standards. It was ever thus....

springdale1 · 03/03/2021 19:21

Radio 1 censored Fairytale of New York though... why is this different?

Why should women have to hear misogynistic lyrics played at them whilst they are minding their own business. Loads of stuff used to be okay but isn’t anymore, that’s a lazy argument.

OP posts:
SimonJT · 03/03/2021 19:26

Why are you pretending that radio 1 aren’t censoring this song when they are?

WannabeOT · 03/03/2021 19:26

Missed out on WAP did you, Op?

toconclude · 03/03/2021 19:27

Hmm
user88899 · 03/03/2021 19:34

@toconclude you don't think theyd ban that if that was a lyric?

JoanWilderbeast · 03/03/2021 20:07

Radio 1 Extra would have to cease and desist right now so...

DioneTheDiabolist · 03/03/2021 20:08

YABU OP, if it's popular, Radio 1 play it. If you dont want to listen, tune into something else. Moral outrage about music goes back to Mozart and probably further. It's just pointless, boring moralising.🙄

WannabeOT · 03/03/2021 20:15

That lyric makes no sense Confused and why would they ban that?

frumpety · 03/03/2021 20:17

Can't make a wife out of a ho, its an odd lyric for a 17yr old boy to use, it's not like he is 54 and on his 3rd wife. Honestly, how would he know ? Its just flung in there to try and make his mediocre at best lyrics seem more 'edgy'.

PPNC · 03/03/2021 20:22

Hate to say I quite like that song Blush

To be honest though on scales of misogyny in songs this doesn’t rate high! If you listen to it he’s actually singing about being bitter from being dumped, it also says “I lost my shot I didn’t mean it”.

The general context is he was a twat, she dumped him and refuses to take him back, he’s hurt and bitter.

So just about reflective and honest about a lot of men and good for the (fictional) her.

frumpety · 03/03/2021 20:40

The ' I lost my shit , you know I didn't mean it ' bit bothers me more if I am being honest, what does that mean ? You shouted ? broke stuff ? pushed her ? hit her ?

TopTabby · 03/03/2021 20:42

I remember when Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was banned, we've come a long way since then!Hmm
Actually YANBU as this is the same BBC that tries so very very hard not to be offensive at all, to anyone, ever & virtue signal about their commitment to equality to a ridiculous extent.
Yet misogynistic lyrics are absolutely fine. Ok then.
These lyrics are very mild compared to a lot of rap lyrics which are often downright offensive to women but I totally take your point.

endlesswicker · 03/03/2021 20:54

90% of pop music over the last 10 years has been an unmitigated heap of garbage tbh, which is chiefly the reason I never listen to Radio 1. It's grim.
