AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

OP posts:

And what are the chances of catching it outside when a runner whizzes by?

Probably higher is said runner coughs in your face or spits.

ShowOfHands · 02/03/2021 11:17

@Spidder I've never spat when out running and I clock up v long distances. All the runners I pass are considerate (as are all the dog walkers, walkers, cyclists etc).

My DD's school has made mask wearing compulsory all along. DD has been wearing one 6hrs a day since March. It always surprises me when people mention it as it's just the norm for us.

Notabove25 · 02/03/2021 11:18

@Vegeetas

I see loads of runners round my neck of the woods that are breathing heavily and spit onto the pavement etc as they are running about. On a personal level I wish they had to sign disclaimers that if they carry on running at the end of a pavement and run into a car it is automatically their fault and not the drivers!!
You might want to revise your Highway Code. Pedestrians have right of way over vehicles if the car is turning into a road.

I think what Piers Morgan wants is for people to be talking about Piers Morgan.

TheJerkStore · 02/03/2021 11:20

As I said, I wish they could all just run round tracks or disused airfields

Yeah cos we all live near those...... and currently we are supposed to be limiting our travel and staying local.

ItsMarch · 02/03/2021 11:21

the ones I come across are mostly respectful to distance, stepping aside for walkers
Luck you! Not my experience. Just yesterday a runner couldn’t be bothered to wait one minute for my toddler to move to the side and actually swore under their breath at us. Unfortunately this isn’t an isolated incident where I live.

NutellaEllaElla · 02/03/2021 11:22

Trish Greenhalgh, professor in primary care health sciences at the University of Oxford said it on Good Morning Britain:
"There is no doubt that you can catch it if you inhale. The exercising jogger - the puffing and panting jogger - you can feel their breath come and you can sometimes actually feel yourself inhale it, so there's no doubt that there is a danger there," she told ITV's Good Morning Britain.

She said: "40% of Covid cases happen by catching it from people who have no symptoms - so you're jogging along, you think you're fine, and then the next day you develop symptoms of Covid, but you've actually breathed that Covid onto someone perhaps you know, an old lady walking a dog or something like that."

Fembot123 · 02/03/2021 11:24
@fembot123 That's really good of you. I just hold my breath for a few seconds if any of the paths are narrow!
It’s mainly because if someone shouts at me I’m going to shout back and it’ll be a whole thing and I haven’t got time for that 🤣

Notabove25 · 02/03/2021 11:24

I can honestly say I've never felt the breath of a passing runner. Really?

RaspberryCoulis · 02/03/2021 11:26

Piers Morgan is an arse.

enjoyingscience · 02/03/2021 11:27

Never felt the breath of a runner ever. Not even doing a parkrun or something, where there are lots in close proximity. You’d surely have to be practically shagging to actually feel someone’s breath 😂

NutellaEllaElla · 02/03/2021 11:28

Yeah, i'm not completely sure what to make of it. I mean, i've heard that you need a certain 'dose' of exposure to catch it and I would be surprised if that brief, dispersed exposure would do it but am no expert.

"the ones I come across are mostly respectful to distance, stepping aside for walkers"

hahahahahha. good one OP!

HOkieCOkie · 02/03/2021 11:29

You cannot run with a mask on trust me I tried and couldn’t breathe.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 02/03/2021 11:29

There are lots of online exercise classes, with a wide variety of options, if you prefer to stay indoors. Maybe we should do the high impact sweaty stuff indoors or at a time when there will be few people around, so that people who walk for their exercise can do it in a way that feels safer.

Don’t think it will happen.

I don't think so. I can smell people's aftershave or perfume from walking by them so of course we will be able to inhale their out breath.
ShapeShiftedForThis · 02/03/2021 11:30

Piers is an arrogant mansplainer who needs to lay off the hobnobs himself.

Januaryissodull · 02/03/2021 11:31

@Foxyloxy1plus1 why should I do my exercise indoors or at another time to make some people walking feel better?

TheOrigRights · 02/03/2021 11:33

Oh jog on Piers.

Gerla · 02/03/2021 11:33

You cannot run with a mask on trust me I tried and couldn’t breathe.

You can run with a mask ready to put on if you are passing close by another person. I do it all the time. I think this is a fair compromise.

Bunnyrun5 · 02/03/2021 11:34

Here we go again... it’s the anti running crew! I run several times a week I try to be respectful of other path users but find walkers, mums with Prams, dog walkers (both dogs on long leads or running free) hog the pavements without consideration for anyone else. They rarely look around to see if anyone needs to pass them and when I run up behind and say excuse me they glare as if it’s me being the problem. I think it proved since lockdown how intolerant we are as a nation, sadly I’ve even been told to run in the f** g road and I’m 60. It’s too dangerous and if people would just be considerate we’d all live in a nicer place. Running in a mask would be really difficult as breathing needs to be easy when your Herat rate is up. So sorry piers you are being selfish but hey come for a run with me wear a mask and we will see how you get on😛

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 02/03/2021 11:34

It was intended to be ironic.

I’m used to leaping into hedges and into the road now.

Graciebobcat · 02/03/2021 11:34

I wish Piers Morgan would wear a mask on TV. One that prevents him from ever being seen or heard of ever again, the poisonous fuckwit.

Then what about people who are walking last, exerting themselves? I see plenty of unfit walkers huffing and puffing 😂

I think that a majority of those 40% symptom free individuals are spreading it indoors. That’s why cases plummet during lockdown.

Graciebobcat · 02/03/2021 11:36

He's basically a televised internet troll.

Why not make this point twelve months ago, not when we are nearly out of this? Stupid dick.
