AIBU to want to change his mind?

Hello everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to read this and to anyone who shares their thoughts.

Some time ago I agreed with DP that we should purchase a log cabin to replace the shed and trampoline (pic attached). He has a big workstation with three pc screens and it has been squeezed into our living room for the last year where the kids play etc and sometimes things get a bit heated. DP isn't going back to his office so will be working from home from now on.

The cabin we have on order is within regulations so no planning required but the more I think of it, the more of an eyesore it might be when installed as it is 4.5m x 2.5m and will be a tight fit. I have checked with both neighbours and they are happy with it but I have started to really worry.

We have tried to move house twice for a bit more wiggle room but it hasn't worked out so this seemed like the next best thing to give us more space and ease pressure at home. Now I think we are making a mistake but DP has got quite cross about the U turn. He has already started kitting it out in his head - with gym stuff (which is taking over our living room currently) and a TV etc.

Sorry if this seems a bit insignificant but it is really worrying me. I don't want to upset him, but it is a big building and £3000 so feels like a big decision. Having recently lost two grandparents to C19 I don't want to cause a huge row as emotions are running high as it is.

Thank you for your time.

You are questioning whether shoving your dh +all his crap down the bottom of the garden is a good idea?
You have to ask??
You are the envy of many op...

Oneweekleft · 01/03/2021 18:41

I think it will fit in the space well. Seems like the best option even if it is an eye sore.

honeylulu · 01/03/2021 18:50

I think it's a fab idea! I assume getting wifi/ethernet/power/ heat down there isn't a problem. Your DH gets a quiet work and gym space and you get the benefit of all his crap out of the house!

We have a "log cabin" style garden office though H uses it as a shed and still works in the house hmmm.

StoneofDestiny · 01/03/2021 18:50

Sounds like a great idea to me. It would also please the neighbours to see a trampoline gone I imagine.

Queenoftheashes · 01/03/2021 18:51

A garden office is on our list (DP's list) for our next home. As a PP mentioned, you get rid of the man and his weights and his filing cabinet to the bottom of the garden. You can then sing loudly in the house without complaint...

Zarinea · 01/03/2021 18:56

Sorry about your grandparents Thanks

Sounds to me like a sensible use of a slightly awkwardly-shaped bit of garden!

You won't lose usable lawn, and it sounds like it will suit your family.

The only thing I'd worry about would be neighbours, but if they're happy I would be too!

bookworm34 · 01/03/2021 18:56

Think of the peace... YABU.

DDiva · 01/03/2021 18:57

Honestly I cant imagine itll be more of an eyesore than the stuff currently cluttering up your house. That extra space will be invaluable I would imagine.

User1511 · 01/03/2021 18:58

Looks like a great idea .

MustardMitt · 01/03/2021 19:00

I think it’s a great idea too.

Aprilx · 01/03/2021 19:02

It sounds like a great idea and the removal of the trampoline is the icing on the cake. 🙂

Daisypod · 01/03/2021 19:07

It's a great idea, really want to do this ourselves and rather intrigued about where you can get a log cabin for 3k from. Please share if you can

Wiredforsound · 01/03/2021 19:09

I think that’s an amazing idea and I want to do it. Kick him out and you take the space yourself. You can always sell it on in a year or two if it doesn’t work out. There’ll still be loads of people working from home so you’ll get a good price.

I agree with this, but do make sure that he takes his three screens and other work shite down there as well as the bloody gym shit.
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 01/03/2021 19:11

Can you fit a bed in as well? - no reason for him to use the house at all really, other than the bathroom

looselegs · 01/03/2021 19:12

My husband has a 'workshop'. It looked huge when it first went up, but I soon got used to it.
He spends hours tinkering with his motorbike, and I get a bit of peace!
Best thing ever!!

picklemewalnuts · 01/03/2021 19:41

Go for it. You can easily plant up a screen so you don't need to look at it.

DartmoorDoughnut · 01/03/2021 19:44

It sounds like a brilliant idea

Ileflottante · 01/03/2021 20:05

Are you sad your smart new garden cabin will block the view of the car park? Confused

Ileflottante · 01/03/2021 20:06

Sorry, that sounded unkinder than I meant it. I think it’s a great idea and it will be very useful in the future too.

lanthanum · 01/03/2021 21:08

I might worry a little about the security/insurance of expensive kit in a cabin close to a back gate like that.

mnahmnah · 01/03/2021 21:15

You haven’t made it clear what you are worrying about - the cost? The eyesore aspect? Shoving your DH down the bottom of the garden?

The cost seems worth it to me.

You can paint it a nice colour, put plants on the roof etc to make it look nice

DH clearly wants it and your home will be more peaceful.

All a winner to me!

Sgjudxbyef · 01/03/2021 21:20

Likewise.
whatisthislifesofullofcare · 01/03/2021 21:26

That bottom part of your garden doesn’t look like 2.5m....unless you are measuring fence to fence....but doesn’t the fence on the right sit up on a raised wall area? I doubt you can sit the log cabin on that level as then it would be quite tall....isn’t there a height restriction (2m?) if the garden building is closer than one metre from a boundary?

MuddleMoo · 01/03/2021 21:29

I'd be slightly concerned about security but if it is all secure then go for it.
