People should not go on holiday in Dubai

MariaAngustias · 28/02/2021 08:37

After reading and hearing about the treatment of women in general and, in particular, what has happened to Princess Latifa how can people go on holiday to Dubai? Also her sister, Shamsa, allegedly abducted by her Father in the UK, drugged and taken back to Dubai. WTF is wrong with people who can go to Dubai for a freekin holiday whilst this is happening.

OP posts:

I agree with you op.
I'm also amazed that there is an advert for holidays to Saudi Arabia, seriously?

B33Fr33 · 28/02/2021 10:36

There are a lot of "No go" countries for me due to my sexuality and feelings about human rights. I can see why people don't want visitors from or come to the UK. Maybe we could save the planet by sticking to our principles.

lovepickledlimes · 28/02/2021 10:36

You are free to not want to visit certain countries that is within your rights. I feel the same about holidaying in china or north korea. Other people are perfectly free to go there if they want.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 28/02/2021 10:39

I don't understand the poster who corresponded with the hotel in malaysia who said they were doing everything possible to fight back against the persecution of gay people then still refused to go and stay there. Wouldn't you want to support this business?

I was thinking that. It's bit of a dillema, isn't it. You wnat to support them but by that you also support the gov. That's the problem everywhere

The Saudi royal family is trying to turn the country into a tourist destination to diversify income from oil. But it’s a matter of too little too late and doesn’t go enough. Even Muslim families who live in the gulf don’t go into Saudi unless it for hajj or business. That’s why the UAE and Kuwait and Oman does so well - it’s attracts young muslim families from the gulf as well as abroad.
sst1234 · 28/02/2021 11:10

The disdain from Dubai actually stems from cultural snobbery. It’s just dressed up as ‘oh look, don’t they have terrible human rights’. The same culturally superior, progressive folks don’t think twice about human rights in the same way about other places that consider to be less ‘tacky’

OhWhyNot · 28/02/2021 11:18

If you are going to be critical of those travelling to Dubai then also be critical of those travelling to India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Cuba and look at their human rights records (there are others to add to the list)

Do you think in India and Sri Lanka those I’m who have built the lovely hotels are paid a fair wage Hmm

But then this is so about snobbery too the above destinations are not all glitzy new money and very much middle class destinations with culture we never see criticism on MN for travelling to any other country apart from Dubai Hmm and the odd I would never go to the US when Trump was president

lovepickledlimes · 28/02/2021 11:18

@sst1234 not necessarily true for everyone though at least to me personally due to personal reasons I would object more to china and north korea then Dubai so maybe I do agree there is more problematic countries that are not under as much scrutiny

SpringisSpinning · 28/02/2021 11:23

Isn't princess latifa imprisoned next to some posh hotel? I can't imagine enjoying my break knowing there was a human next to me denied freedom purely for being female?

Imagine if that person was purely imprisoned for being gay or black??? No one would go there would be outrage.
Just shows really how we still have a long way to go re women's rights.

SpringisSpinning · 28/02/2021 11:25

Yes come to Saudi.. An experience like no other.. Watch us flog and decapitate people like it was the medieval days again!! Really!!

sofato5miles · 28/02/2021 11:26

Beheading? Jesus now you just look like a racist dickhead.

I know Dubai and Abu Dhabi well, as i cover the region. Been working there for a decade have great friends there, including emiratis. And quite a few gays too. Very few british friends though, on reflection but mostly european and arab. My ex boyfriend is a Jordanian christian in AD.

People are people wherever you are and most people do their best to be kind and live a good life. And for the poster who had issues making eye contact. I call utter, utter BS.

Only 11% of the population are indiginous. Their old way of life gone and they are finding a new balance, where they actively promote tolerance. Men and women can now cohabit but get on a plane, or marry quickly if you get pregant. Just be a realist.

Throwing stones etc, we like that sheikha Latifa has made international headlines for pressure for change but what about all the women killed in the UK, truly where is the outrage?? And we have our own dear Prince Andrew.

I just think people love to bitch, don't really care about a dialogue that actively improves things and want to feel smug 🤷🏻‍♀️

sofato5miles · 28/02/2021 11:28

Beheading in UAE, i meant
That is most certainly not.a.thing

PicsInRed · 28/02/2021 11:39

Dubai, Qatar etc, I don't even transit though these countries because if I was raped there - and got found out before I could skip the country as the rape VICTIM Hmm - they would arrest and charge ME.

I'll never forget the coerced and forcible digital rape all those women on that flight from Qatar suffered - marched from the plane and forced - as Qatari authorities attempted to locate the mother of an abandoned baby ... so they could punish her. And that's what happens to women going about their business, just transiting through. In holiday or working there and raped? As the migrant worker mother likely was? God help you.

Last I heard they had triumphantly identified the mother from dna records taken from all migrant workers and were attempting to bring her back to Qatar. Yep, to punish her.

And those are the supposedly "good" ones in the area.

Hmm

The US has effectively told them that as far as oil income goes, their number is up.

As a PP said, too little, too late. Economically, it's all downhill from here, unrest will grow as oil income dries up, and any sensible Saudi with the means to do so will be setting themselves and their kids up abroad in readiness for the inevitable.

PricklesAndSpikes · 28/02/2021 11:54

@belinda789

Having a "wonderful time" in Dubai? Not if you accidentally come across a public beheading.
That actually made me snort out loud! Beheadings in Dubai? Erm, no...

1000%
Andante57 · 28/02/2021 12:08

There are many countries I wouldn’t visit - I’ve even avoided France (where possible) the last few years but saying ‘lots of countries have poor human rights’ isn’t a justification for going to UAE

Ghosty you could just as well say lots of countries have poor human rights isn’t a justification for going to Cuba or Poland or wherever.

Better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Brinstar · 28/02/2021 12:28

My disdain comes from homosexuality being illegal there, which certain people on mumsnet will always try to justify.

Onlinedilema · 28/02/2021 13:39

I agree with the poster who said it's not their responsibility to make other countries more economically viable, it's a no from me.

480Widdio · 28/02/2021 13:45

Public beheadings in Dubai, tell me more!

I have been to Dubai, there are many countries I would never visit, but Dubai is not one of them.

roarfeckingroarr · 28/02/2021 13:53

I always think "thank fuck for that" when I hear the Saudi tourism advert byline of "Saudi Arabia, a place like no other".

haggisandmarsbar · 28/02/2021 14:00

@FeelthewrathofthesuperRad

Honestly if you’re going to take outrage to every single country’s unsavoury parts then the only place to left live would be the moon.

@GrumpyHoonMain I’ve heard those Clangers are right nasty bastards

They make lovely soup though and they makes it all ok.

Aye, and their blue string pudding is worth the journey alone.
