To ask my neighbours to stop meowing out of the window? (Lighthearted I think??)

We live in a suburban terrace of 4 houses with a small garden. DCat likes to roam said garden and neighbouring gardens with his many local cat friends.

Yesterday I heard meowing and went to investigate, expecting (clumsy) DCat to be stuck up a tree or on a conservatory roof.

Instead I find neighbours next door but one leaning out of their upstairs window doing their best, quite accurate, cat impressions, no hint of irony. DCat looks baffled as does his pal, a local tabby. Neighbours seem to be attempting to lure cats over to take photos of them.

Slightly weirded out I went back inside.... only to hear them still meowing several hours later - and again today????

When I went into the garden they waved at me politely and then carried on meowing.....

So, WWYD?

YABU - it's a free country and they can meow at local cats if they like
YANBU - they're bonkers, keep poor DCat way from them

Oh, dear, I meow if I see a cat out of the window. I've got two of my own and one is really chatty and likes me to meow to him, so I'm used to meowing when I see a cat.

Fortunately from your description of where you live I don't think I am your neighbour.

eleanorsos · 27/02/2021 14:58

@LApprentiSorcier Ha, oh dear! I don't think I'd mind the occasional meow but hours on end?! We love cats but seems like some kind of sinister cat trap to me! Maybe I've seen too many films... 😁

Love it. Checked it wasn’t me. No I don’t live in a terrace.

Notgoingonholiday · 27/02/2021 15:01

I would find this weird but also hilarious. Would absolutely let them crack on purely for entertainment value...unless they start doing it at unsociable hours or your cat is attracted by their noises, but that's unlikely.

eleanorsos · 27/02/2021 15:04

@Notgoingonholiday Not particularly unsociable hours, no, was a weekday afternoon and now weekend. DH is working from home but doesn't seem bothered!

DCat does love their garden but so far haven't seen him climb in their window.... Is it a matter of time? Some kind of cat summoning ritual??

Catfishing ?

SnotLongTilEaster · 27/02/2021 15:31

I would meow at your cat from my window. I love cats, especially standing cats.

@SnotLongTilEaster 😁 But would you meow into an empty garden hoping for cats to appear? They don't seem to wait for him before meowing!

Maybe I'm the miseryguts though, I do love fluffy visitors...

No. The Summoning Ritual involves casting incense out of a packet labelled with the most magical word ever - Dreamies.

SnotLongTilEaster · 27/02/2021 16:13

Yes, I’d meow to an empty garden to get a cat to appear. I love cats so much. They are the best.
This is my cat. I love her so much, but I love all cats.

eleanorsos · 27/02/2021 16:58

@NeverDropYourMooncup oh so that's where they're all coming from...

@SnotLongTilEaster fair enough, I can see why! Look at that cheeky smile 😀

I know, she’s a beauty 😉 can I have a pic of your cat? I swear I won’t meow to it 😂

Flowersandjellybeans · 27/02/2021 17:27

I had to really read this to check this wasn’t about me Grin.

Ours come and meow loudly in the garden and we sometimes open the window and meow back!

I’m lucky now but have had some awful neighbours before - I reckon if this is most annoying they do you’re winning.

SnotLongTilEaster · 27/02/2021 17:34

Flowersandjellybeans I would like you to be my neighbour. 👍

makingmammaries · 27/02/2021 17:47

YABU. It’s my party and I’ll meow if I want to.

SnotLongTilEaster · 27/02/2021 17:56

Meow if I want to, meow if I want to.
You would meow too, if it happened to you! 🐈

BalloonSlayer · 27/02/2021 17:57

I always greet cats by making that "prrr-wow" noise they use to say hello.

It works. They almost always come over.

I didn't know this was antisocial.

LApprentiSorcier · 27/02/2021 17:58

I greet my cats with 'brrr-nee'.

BalloonSlayer · 27/02/2021 18:01

There is a place near Sydney called Berowra. I always imagine it full of friendly cats as it sounds like that noise.

SassenachWitch · 27/02/2021 18:12

I love cats, I don’t meow at them, but I do talk to every single one I see.

We have a feral factory cat at work, I’ve been trying to make friends with him for years, the talking and chu chuching hasn’t worked, maybe I should meow.

Ha ha. Perhaps the town planners were having a meeting and a cat wandered in just as someone said 'Now, about a name for this new town ...'
IsThePopeCatholic · 27/02/2021 18:17

I hate cats because I love birds. Meow away!

HeckyPeck · 27/02/2021 18:19

Are they meowing constantly for hours?! That is v odd!

WeeDangerousSpike · 27/02/2021 18:24

I love that the cats looked confused - I wonder what the neighbours were saying?! Like Delboy taking French! Grin

I used to meow dramatically at DCat if he started nagging me about something or other. He'd just huff at me and storm off, probably muttering in cat about how I'd not turned a pillow the required 7 degrees or had given him chicken instead of tuna, and was now shouting the cat equivalent of 'mangetout, bonnet de douche' at him.

BreatheAndFocus · 27/02/2021 18:27

It’s ok to meow or speak to a passing cat, but it’s weird to do it to entice cats into your garden.

It does make me anxious though as years ago, my cat was happily sitting in a park behind our house and I was watching him out of my bedroom window - and a boy of 9 or 10 reached out his hand and called him over in what looked like a friendly, I-want-to-stroke-you way, then when my cat got near the little shite slapped him round the head! I’ve never moved so fast in my whole life!
