My builder just took my fireplace

I am currently having some building work done and a fireplace in the bedroom had to be removed. It is a very pretty tiled Victorian one. I had intended to sell it but with lockdown and not having any place to store it I told my builder to get rid of it. At 07:30 this Saturday morning my husband answers the door to one of the builders saying he needs to take some stuff from our site. He doesn’t say what he is taking. We weren’t expecting them today although they usually work on most Saturdays so we weren’t surprised to see one of them. It’s only when my husband sees a van from a fireplace specialist outside that he clicks that the builders have sold our fireplace. By then it is too late to go and stop them as they leave before my husband can go talk to them. AIBU to be annoyed my builder didn’t tell me what he was up to or am I being ungrateful as I told him to get rid of it ? I feel it was a bit underhand as it just happened without my knowledge. Should I say anything to my builder or let it go ?

Thank you for your patience...

The issue is that I use an ultra cheap crappy tablet when on MN. I can download images, but they seem to disappear into some mysterious electronic limbo that I can't access. It's incredibly frustrating, but probably for the best otherwise I would use memes WAY too much.

I can attach photos though, so am not completely pitiful.

Awwwwwwwww That's absolutely good enough! Cute

Familyshopper · 28/02/2021 17:21

You could have easily sold it I’m sick of people using ‘lockdown’ as an excuse be honest you couldn’t be bothered & had no where to store it, now you are moaning because the builder did what you told him to, get a grip !

abas · 28/02/2021 17:23

You did tell him to take it but I think he should have double-checked before taking it out of your house.

grandmakim · 28/02/2021 17:26

Unfortunately you are being very unreasonable! Your builder did exactly as you asked, you're just annoyed because you didn't think of it or couldn't be bothered to make the calls etc yourself! You need to let go and be grateful its going somewhere good and not to be dumped! Silly Billy!

wildchild554 · 28/02/2021 17:27

What you probably should of done is ask if he could sell it for you and you split the sale price as he'd probably have a better idea where to sell it, or to knock some money off your bill, but as you decided to tell him to just get rid of it he did nothing wrong and at least it hasn't gone to waste..

Yogalola · 28/02/2021 17:28

Just let it go, if you instructed the builder to take it away and if he hadn’t you would of been cross. It’s good thinking on his part to try to make a few extra quid for himself with something he’d been asked to dispose of.

lcl · 28/02/2021 17:32

You let him take it so he’s entitled to sell it.

EasternDailyStress · 28/02/2021 17:35

Obviously more money than sense.

LadyLolaRuben · 28/02/2021 17:35

My partner is a builder and he says that you instructed your builder to get rid of it and in all fairness you have no recourse on that. Hes done exactly what was agreed

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/02/2021 17:37

@JesusInTheCabbageVan since the thread is still going maybe try to flog some merch like this😂

Lovemusic33 · 28/02/2021 17:38

You told the builder to get rid of it because you couldn’t be bothered to sell it? Now you are complaining because your builder has sold it? Would you rather it had been destroyed? What difference does it make? Hopefully the builder will knock a bit off your bill but at the end of the day he did what you asked so it was up to him what he did with it.

Tessabelle74 · 28/02/2021 17:40

You told him to get rid of it, he has. Your fault if you couldnt be bothered to sell it

diagold4u · 28/02/2021 17:41

You told him to get rid of it. So he was entitled to do what he wanted with it in order to get rid of it. In this case he sold it. My bil works in property development, there's a lot of very decent sometimes brand new that the owners don't want and they leave it behind for the company to dispose of. Many times they sell it on, why dispose perfectly good stuff.

I think we need a dead horse flogging gif.

Someone once chucked out a mortician style rug, it was sold for £500

diagold4u · 28/02/2021 17:42

Moroccan*

Arnold106 · 28/02/2021 17:44

You asked him to get rid off it that’s what he did , you can’t say a word to him that would be silly you should of bothered to sell it .

oakleaffy · 28/02/2021 17:50

More fool you for telling him to get rid..
Nothing you can do.
Builder would have thought he was doing you a favour.
How ever stoves are more in fashion now.. more efficient.. but Architectural antiques are always in demand.
Painful lesson..☹️

shhsecretsquirrel · 28/02/2021 17:52

You see something new everyday... no, not people not RTT but an AIBU where the OP accepts the MN judgement and doesn't threaten to delete the thread. Amazing!! Bravo!

Bebethany · 28/02/2021 17:53

My guess is that there was more speed and less haste on your behalf, don’t feel to bad... just learn by it and think carefully before you speak.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/02/2021 17:54

@SchrodingersImmigrant I like this. Simple. Classic. Guaranteed to ensure everyone maintains a 2m gap from you at all times.

@Designjunkie so there we go. You're officially Fireplace Loon, from now until the heat death of the universe. You can literally do anything now - become Prime Minister, solve climate change, or skin David Attenborough and make an apron out of him; nothing matters any more. You told him to get rid of the fireplace. Why. Why did you do that. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
