To give up on my HR career?

lockdowncrazylady · 25/02/2021 16:41

Currently studying for my Level 5 HR

However I have recently started a dessert business from home which is going really well. But I can't manage studying HR and running this as well. I also feel like my heart just isn't in it anymore.

I've made loads of crappy decisions in my life so I'm not sure if this is another one of them.

OH isn't very helpful just tells me I'm stupid if I give it up.

How far into your studying are you and how long will it take to finish

lockdowncrazylady · 25/02/2021 16:47

I started my level 5 in October due to finish July I believe.

I would totally finish Level 5. July is only 5 months away and if you don't finish you'll lose an option. I would strongly advise you to finish

Bubnomore · 25/02/2021 16:49

If you mean July 21, I would finish it you’ve managed this long to get to the point of managing both I would dig deep and continue. Hopefully your dessert business will continue to thrive. The qualification gives you swim thing to fall back on should at any point your circumstances change and you want to pursue a HR career again.

1FootInTheRave · 25/02/2021 16:50

I would finish.

Mrswalliams1 · 25/02/2021 16:50

Finish your level 5. At least you will have the qualification as a back up in future

Bubnomore · 25/02/2021 16:50

*Something, not swim!Smile

HGC2 · 25/02/2021 16:50

Finish, if you ever want a career in HR in the future qualifications are essential

VimFuego101 · 25/02/2021 16:54

I would push through to finish it. It's always good to have a backup plan.

AllTheFloralCurtains · 25/02/2021 16:56

Finish your level 5, it's less than 5 months, gives you another string to your bow or whatever the phrase is.
Dessert business could be a great success - but it never ever hurts to have a back up

user1494055864 · 25/02/2021 16:59

I think you should finish the couse

user1494055864 · 25/02/2021 16:59

CIPD can be a bit dry but you’re about halfway through.

I deliberately trained in HR via CIPD 15 odd years ago so that I could work PT in mid level HR to secure a base income, while chasing my dream career, which was more creative, insecure, often self employed or contract based etc. So similar to your situation. That strategy worked very well for me and I’ve been full time in my chosen career for 12 years.

If you are short on time, ease back on the dessert business (or get a member of your household to help?) just until July.

It’s almost always best to keep options open.

Jaymar · 25/02/2021 17:17

I work in HR and didn’t enjoy doing my level 7 but I really love my career. Making desserts for a living sounds like a lot of fun though!

When you say your heart isn’t in it anymore are you just referring to the studying or do you also have HR work experience and have lost your passion for the profession?

purpledagger · 25/02/2021 22:09

I think you should complete your course. You have only got a few months left and once you've completed it, you will always have the qualification to your name.

Scale back your business and just focus on doing the minimum you need in order to finish your course. Once you have done the course, you scale up your business.

blueshoes · 25/02/2021 22:09

Finish it.

Oly4 · 25/02/2021 22:12

Definitely complete your course. You may need it one day

enjoyingscience · 25/02/2021 22:12

Finish it. The world is weird right now, and a recognised qualification is 100% worth it.

Cocomarine · 25/02/2021 22:13

Dessert business from home, when all restaurants are shut... there will still be successful businesses from home when they re-open, some even supplying those restaurants. But no, right now I would not ditch a course I was half way through for baking which is busy during a lockdown.

fabulousspider · 25/02/2021 22:14

Just do it, just a few months to go. You could even ask if you could go part time for the last few months, and extend the course end a bit out. To give you a bit more time.

chocoholic2021 · 25/02/2021 22:16

@confused1974

I agree with this. A very high number of businesses fail within the first two years. Your qualification is your insurance policy.
KenAdams · 25/02/2021 22:17

Stick with it. Take aways will be so much less in demand once restaurants open.

Cocomarine · 27/02/2021 16:45

@lockdowncrazylady ?

BertieBotts · 27/02/2021 16:49

Finish it.

Can I ask, have you ever been suspected of having adult ADHD? It is purely the comment "I've made loads of crappy decisions and can't decide if this is another" that's making me ask. Not a dig BTW.

JackieWeaverFever · 27/02/2021 16:54

Push through and finish it.
