To give up on my HR career?

Currently studying for my Level 5 HR

However I have recently started a dessert business from home which is going really well. But I can't manage studying HR and running this as well. I also feel like my heart just isn't in it anymore.

I've made loads of crappy decisions in my life so I'm not sure if this is another one of them.

OH isn't very helpful just tells me I'm stupid if I give it up.

I'd be wary that the market for desserts is higher at the mo because restaurants aren't open.

Id be finishing level 5 as starting your own business is inherently unstable and you don't want to look back in 2 years and kick yourself.

The CIPD L5 is a widely recognised and valued qualification so I’d stick at it - it’s only another few months.

I've never been quite sure what benefit is to be gained from HR in any organisation- they seem to be almost entirely pointless woolly thinkers.

So I would do something else worthwhile.

GoneCrazy · 27/02/2021 17:16

Ignore @Daphnise! HR are critical in an organisation and believe it or not advanced HR practices profit an organisation immensely! I do not work in HR btw!

Finish your quals. Cakes/desserts are doing well because we are in lockdown e.g. everyone wants to buy a statement birthday cake etc but it might not continue.

Oblomov21 · 27/02/2021 17:18

Definitely finish the 5.

PanamaPattie · 27/02/2021 17:21

Do you have a factory set up and approval from your local Environmental Health Officer? Food hygiene certificates? Or do you knock up a few puds and sell through Facebook? I ask this because if you are a real business with real targets and overheads, you will need to sell a lot of desserts to make a living. If you are just playing at it, stop and concentrate on a career that may go somewhere.

What experiences have you had that have led you to forming this opinion?

I’ve bought loads of things from local businesses during lockdown; afternoon teas, takeaways, cook at home from restaurants, cocktails, brownies, deserts and more! Never bought them before lockdown and won’t again when when we open back up because I like to go out. I imagine this is the same for most people. These businesses will slowly start to go back to pre lockdown levels of sales. I’d be careful of putting all my eggs in one basket at the moment.

I work in HR

I have noticed that more and more HR roles want at least L5 (if not L7) even for quite junior roles now.

I would finish it. You've only got 5 months to go and you will ALWAYS have the qualification - even if you become the next Mr Kipling you'll have that in your back pocket and without it you will struggle these days to get into HR if you want to in the future.

Good luck with the business and the qualification. 20 weeks or so of graft and then you're done.

Graffitiqueen · 27/02/2021 17:44

Finish the qualification.

WhoStoleMyCheese · 27/02/2021 17:48

Finish it
