No vaccine for this group of people

Ok, I've just heard on the radio that because the C19 vaccine has at some point, in the last God knows how long, was tested on animals, and this means that adults and children who are Vegan are going to refuse to have it done.

Has the World gone mad??

AIBU to think you going to let your child or yourself refuse a potentially life saving preventative medicine???? This is akin to a Jehovahs Witness refusing a blood transfusion to save a life surely?

There will be a few people who come up with something, I doubt many vegans think like this.

My friend's mum is a Jain; they are very strictly vegetarian with many Jains being vegan. She and all her elderly Jain friends have been vaccinated already because they were in the 70+ cohort.

I imagine that some vegans will have it - some will and some wont - up to them - are they any more 'unreasonable' in your eyes than anti vax or the worriers that it might change dna/long term side effects.... all labouring under various reasons not to...

Meanwhile the vast majority will have it and offer protection to them due to the masses having it

luxxlisbon · 24/02/2021 08:36

"and this means that adults and children who are Vegan are going to refuse to have it done."

Does it? Based on what exactly?

Pretty much all medication is tested on animals and I don't know of a single vegan who refuses vaccines or medication on this basis.
I'm sure there is a small minority, just like Jehovah's Witnesses along with some other religions refuse life saving blood transfusions and some hard line Christian's refuse vaccines where the research is linked to historical research using aborted cells.

custardbear · 24/02/2021 08:43

@MyLittleOrangutan - most people on the planet would prefer an alternatives to animal testing, not just Vegans

Orchidflower1 · 24/02/2021 08:46

@pawsies

Then again if a vegan does have it you'll get someone saying how hypocritical they are for having it!

Vegans can't seem to win sometimes.

I think that’s the point of the thread- highlighting the crazy world of extreme veganism.

Yep, I will be saying that.
shouldistop · 24/02/2021 08:50

Well children won't be offered it for a very long time (if ever).
I wonder if the radio station spoke to every single vegan? Did they do a poll perhaps? Or maybe they're just talking out their arses.

Frazzled2207 · 24/02/2021 08:54

Vegan family members of mine have no issue at all about having the vaccine.

MyLittleOrangutan · 24/02/2021 09:01

@custardbear
I think you would be surprised how many either 1. Dont care about the suffering of animals. 2. Dont believe animals suffer at all. 3. Dont even consider whether animals suffer because they were put here by God for us to use as we please. Or 4. Do care that animals suffer but think testing on them anyway is acceptable.

slashlover · 24/02/2021 09:15

I this one of these news stories where 2 or 3 people tweet and the media whip it into a frenzy?

Similar to the the "WOKE PEOPLE WANT TO BAN THE FILM GREASE!1!1" going around at Christmas, which was based on about 4 tweets,

mumwon · 24/02/2021 09:22

I would suggest that the majority of militant anti vaxers are based on anti science or a warped misunderstanding of science & medicine & while a few MIGHT be vegan many more are not.

I love animals too, but I would not reject the vaccine because of this!

I’m a vegan, I’m going to have the vaccine. Every other vegan I have spoken to is going to have it too. The prevailing view is that you can’t avoid medicines that have been tested on or developed using animals and not getting the vaccine on that grounds would be idiotic and more harmful for the cause.

VladmirsPoutine · 24/02/2021 09:31

On a TV segment someone also asked if the vaccines are halal. It comes down to personal choice but groups who refuse based on moral etc grounds are really proffering up the government a get-out excuse when the whole lockdown ease road map eventually goes to shit. The gov will just point at them and tell us it's "their fault" why we're still locked up.

Bluesheep8 · 24/02/2021 09:32

There's a lady who posted here to say she wouldn't have AZ because she's Catholic, also misguided as the pope has says it's fine.

Eh? Won't have the vaccine because she's Catholic? Why? Confused

HeckyPeck · 24/02/2021 09:37

Same. It's just lazy reporting probably based on one tweet.

MRex · 24/02/2021 09:37

@Bluesheep8 - because she doesn't know that most vaccines use cells in the manufacture process, she thought it was just AZ.

HeckyPeck · 24/02/2021 09:40

even PETA says vegans should get the vacinne and they aren't known for being middle of the road in their views!

Foresttheout · 24/02/2021 09:41

Mrex I live near a large jain community and haven't heard a single thing about them not wanting the vaccine either.
@Bluesheep8 part of some vaccines development use human cells from aborted fetuses' which have been cultured over many many years so no more actual fetuses' need to be used. Some people who apparently can't read or research take this to mean the vaccine itself has cells of aborted fetuses' in them. I guess that goes against the catholics pro-life stance

FuzzyTurquoise · 24/02/2021 09:43

Most vegans accept that there will be the odd exception to what they have, and vaccinations usually come into this category.

There will also be some people who are not vegan, and have no objection to animal testing, who will also choose not to have the vaccine.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 24/02/2021 09:49

I had this discussion with friends last week. One will be having the jab, sensibly follow the do your best without causing self harm principle. The other won't be having it. They had a bit of a row and the non jabber shouted

"It's made from gorilla snot"

At which point we all stopped and started laughing. I suspect she may have changed her own mind. 😁

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 24/02/2021 09:52

Veganism is about avoiding the use of animal products and exploitation where practical, reasonable, and possible. Most would agree that avoiding life-saving medicine is not reasonable when there are no vegan-friendly alternatives.

It's impossible to life live without causing any harm to animals or using any products that have directly or indirectly caused harm to animals. It's doing the best you can.

slashlover · 24/02/2021 09:52

A little off topic, it annoys me when posters deliberately use vague titles like this. Why write "this group of people" instead of "vegans"? It reminds me of the clickbait some newspapers use.

TheGoblinQueenoftheLabyrinth · 24/02/2021 09:56

Vegan here - I'm absolutely having the vaccine as soon as I'm invited. This fully sounds like overblown vegan outrage in the media. I'm assuming these vegans also never use cash, (our new notes contain animal derivatives) or take painkillers etc. Most vegans are sensible and focused on limiting impact not actually cutting their noses off to spite their faces.

Fourandtwentymilliondoors · 24/02/2021 09:56

I’m a vegan, I’ll be having the jab as soon as it’s offered! If that makes me a hypocrite then I’m happy to be one 😊
