Horsey AIBU - replacement of something my horse destroyed

I’ll try and keep this short!

My horse (M) is out in a little herd of 3. He is quite playful and likes to try and dominate one of them, but equally he comes in with bite marks etc too. Not a problem (unless it gets worse) - they are horses.

One of his field mates (A) has, since the warmer weather, had to wear a special rug as he’s affected by insect bites. It’s like a Lycra material and not very robust or waterproof. It comes in 2 parts - a body and a neck.

Yesterday he came in having had the body taken off him and left destroyed in a puddle. I’m pretty sure it would have been my horse who did that but there is no evidence. I have offered to the owner that I replace said rug with something that still offers the same protection from the insects, but is more robust and suitable for turnout (also more suitable for going out with my horse).

This is likely to cost me as much as replacing the original like for like, in fact it will be more than its value as it wasn’t brand new when she bought it. There are none of her actual rug in stock until April so even if I wanted to buy one I couldn’t, but I don’t want to have to keep replacing something, especially with no evidence.

I’ve asked that she think about it and find one more suitable, but she isn’t having any of it. Having done some research last night people don’t tend to turn horses out with others in the rug she has, so it’s common knowledge that they aren’t very robust.

YABU - I should replace it with the same thing
YANBU - I should replace it with something more suitable for turnout with my horse

With every single strap still done up. She's done it a couple of times since and I have no idea how!! (the rug is fitted properly)

They walk backwards out of them. It's really interesting watching them do it, and still looks like a magic trick. Helps if they have a wall or fence post to stick the rug on, then they walk backwards whilst the rug stays put and they shrug their shoulders through them. More difficult with leg straps but not impossible.

I have got round the rug ripping problem by having a bruiser of a horse who, whilst he generally leaves others alone, threatens to annihilate anyone Touching the Rug. Do Not Touch: The Rug I Will End You. I just have to keep rats out from where I store them.

DinkyDiggies · 25/02/2021 22:38

I wouldn’t set a precedent. horses rip rugs. It’s what they do. If she’s that precious she needs to put her horse on individual turnout.

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 25/02/2021 22:43

I don’t think you get to decide what it is replaced with. If you accept it was your horse that caused the damage then you give the owner the cost of the rug and she can decide what she uses the money for.

sausagerollcake · 25/02/2021 22:48

Your a short step away from buying her a new Boett and they're about the same price as a horse!

I would say you will replace but speak to YO and ask if your horses can be separated so it doesn't happen again.

BabyElephant2 · 25/02/2021 22:51

I wouldn’t replace it at all. They’re horses. If she doesn’t like it she’ll move her horse eventually.

Nice gesture though

BlueLionel · 25/02/2021 22:55

If she has a problem she needs to move her horse. I wouldn't be paying. Just like I don't expect the owner of the horse who fractured my horses hock to pay the vets bill for his operation. Comes with the territory of group turnout, if you don't want the risk, turn out by yourself..

OMG why are some horse people lunatics?! We used to have three absolute freaks on our yard and now fortunately we're down to just one! Sadly he's not going anywhere though as he's been there 15 years, as he never tires of telling us!

CleanQueen123 · 26/02/2021 06:19

@louderthan some are aren't they?!

Luckily the yard I'm on now is very chilled and we all rub along together peacefully but I've seen it all over the years Hmm

TashieWoo · 26/02/2021 06:37

@Nellythemouse

You know the solution don’t you - you need a second horse, so your first has a friend to go out with but there’s no dealing with the awkward other owners.....
I do actually have another horse on grass livery as he is retired, I pay for him to be checked on in the week and do him at weekends. I am tempted to bring him over and then he can share a field with mine and I wouldn’t have to deal with her. But then I have more expense, retired horse currently lives out and loves it but he wouldn’t be able to live out here, plus he’s so happy where he is it seems unfair to uproot him for this reason!

Thankfully it was a snuggy hoods one and not a Boett! Still expensive though.

The precedent thing is why I wanted to buy something tougher, as I didn’t want to be replacing snuggy hoods all the time. But she can just have the money, she knows I’m only doing it once and if the new snuggy hood gets ripped then that’s up to her.

She’s ok sometimes, can be really nice but she’s so up and down, proper Jekyll and Hyde character and I can’t be doing with that. You never know which version you’re going to get when you see her. To be quite honest I don’t have time for her drama and she’s stressing me out now.

I bet you are stressed. Your horses do not have to move or adapt for her. If she has an issue with her horse being with others s/he is separated.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 26/02/2021 08:22

Brew hope she calms down though looks like that won’t happen

Thank you for not hiding this thread in Tack Room. It is a really interesting read. I love the stories about the horses taking their rugs off and the politics and the rug-shredding horses and the ones who gang up to to shred them! It’s fascinating as a non-horse person! Carry on.

Muddledupme · 26/02/2021 20:07

My friend puts a cheap eBay fly rug ( the stretchy kind) over her boet to make it more robust. I've had numerous rugs ripped including a bloody expensive rambo but I've never expected anyone to pay for a repair or replacement. I've also put a cheap rain sheet on top of a heavyweight turn out so I just had to keep repairing it with gaffa tape.

I’ve enjoyed this thread as well. My question is why couldn’t rug lady’s horse be turned out (picking up the lingo) when the OPs horse stayed in because of frozen ground? Couldn’t it have gone out, I mean been turned out on its own?
honeybeetheoneandonly · 26/02/2021 20:47

@viques, horses are herd and prey animals. While some are fine by themselves many aren't. They also bond with other horses and can get very stressed and agitated when separated.

Thanks for the explanation, I didn’t know that, or that some horses can be naughty! Every day a school day Grin
