To serve boiled potatoes

Much stroppiness and comments and moaning because when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied.. Surely everyone eats boiled potatoes for dinner in UK sometimes aren't they an English staple part of our traditional diet for context I didn't serve just boiled spuds I served with peas carrots and salmon encroute (shop bought but nice) are they just spoilt? We had pasta yesterday beautiful tapas day before Indian night before fresh fish etc etc it's not like they have to eat it every day I think they are too used to lovely exotic food and are just being ungrateful shits. Or are boiled potatoes actually that bad?

Nope, why would you when you could have crispy roast or creamy mash, or chips? Boiled potatoes are grim.

notanothertakeaway · 23/02/2021 08:00

I think boiled potatoes are dull / bland, but if you're kind enough to cook, they should show more appreciation. You're not running a cafe

RampantIvy · 23/02/2021 08:03

The best boiled potatoes I ever ate was in Ponta Delgada in the Azores. They were firm and waxy, and boiled in salty water, and tasted wonderful. New potatoes boiled with a sprig of mint and served with lashings of butter are also nice, but boiled old potatoes are just so dull and boring.

When I boil old potatoes I add butter and warmed milk and make a lovely creamy mash.

Sillysandy · 23/02/2021 08:05

I love them. What's wrong with your family?

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 23/02/2021 08:05

Boiled new potatoes or jersey royals are heavenly but plain boiled potatoes are not. If the oven was going on any way for the salmon en croute I would have tossed them in a bit of olive oil and salt and baked them, or sliced into wedges.

That said, if your family have strong opinions on potatoes they should cook them themselves.

Crazycatlady007 · 23/02/2021 08:08

They are nice with a bit of butter and mint.

Xerochrysum · 23/02/2021 08:11

Boiled potatoes shaken in a lidded pan after draining the water to make it fluffy is very nice.

feelingverylazytoday · 23/02/2021 08:11

Boiled potatoes are ok if they're the little ones, what used to be called 'new potatoes', the ones that are scraped or served with the skins still on. The big 'old potatoes' which have to be peeled are better mashed, or roasted/fried/baked.
I was brought up on a traditional British potatoes with everything diet, and that's what my Mum always did, and what I do myself. So I kind of agree with your family.

daisyjgrey · 23/02/2021 08:14

The very worst form of potato.

SATSmadness · 23/02/2021 08:14

Just put butter out too and tell them they're welcome to convert their share into mash on their plate.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/02/2021 08:16

I’ve hated boiled potatoes since the 70s. If anyone served them to me now my heart would sink and my tongue would protest but I would force them down only because I would be grateful for someone cooking instead of me.

NoSquirrels · 23/02/2021 08:19

when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied..

YANBU to serve boiled potatoes but YABU to expect them not to moan when you lied about not serving boiled potatoes! There’s no “apparently” about it - they said “boiled or nice?” so obviously boiled = not nice.

Whether or not you think boiled spuds should be OK, you misled them.

(I think your meal sounds very dry and I’d have just missed out the potatoes of boiled was the only option, but that’s not the point.)

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 23/02/2021 08:19

@SATSmadness

Just put butter out too and tell them they're welcome to convert their share into mash on their plate.
Don't suggest that. You'll be told you're doing it wrong and have poor children who have to eat wallpaper paste potatoes Grin
MagicSummer · 23/02/2021 08:20

Potatoes in any shape or form are fine by me, although boiled would probably not be top of my list! My mother used to serve them with butter and parsley after shaking them in the pan to fluff them up - I liked them! The ones we had at school were a different matter - hard, slightly grey and not a scrap of butter on them!!

Bluntness100 · 23/02/2021 08:22

Can’t stand boiled potatoes. If you’re short of time just blast them in the micro and finish off in the oven with a drizzle of olive oil and some salt. No point cooking something no one likes. Unless you really like them?

But many folks think they are grim.

doublehalo · 23/02/2021 08:23

Love a boiled spud. I usually do more than I need so I can slice them and fry them the next day or make pototo cakes.

thelegohooverer · 23/02/2021 08:23

I can’t possibly judge without knowing what type of potato they were.

It’s all about getting the right type at the right time of year.

LubaLuca · 23/02/2021 08:26

I don't mind boiled potatoes, but they're definitely at the bottom of the list for ways to serve spuds. They're very bland and seem like a frugal offering. I remember being given them with slices of corned beef, cabbage and thin gravy at a friend's house 😬

Mashed potato is just another couple of minutes effort, but so much more delicious.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 23/02/2021 08:26

Boiled spuds are the Lada of the potato world.

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 23/02/2021 08:27

Boiled baby new potatoes covered in salt and butter are food of the gods.

isadorapolly · 23/02/2021 08:28

Oiled potatoes are bland and boring BUT not inedible if with something tasty. Also I’d be pissed off of my kids complained about what I’d cooked no matter if it was disgusting or not!

Only thing that stands out to me is that salmon en croute, boiled potatoes and veg sounds very dry? Where’s the sauce? I notice this a lot when people post what they eat, it always looks dry af!

ShulamithFirestone · 23/02/2021 08:30

They're a bit school-dinnerish. But I certainly wouldn't be standing for any truck if I served them.

JorisBonson · 23/02/2021 08:30

Boiled potatoes with loads of butter and beans and sausages 🤤🤤🤤

arethereanyleftatall · 23/02/2021 08:31

You get an uncooked potato and you can do any one of numerous things with it very very easily. Why would you select the worst tasting option?

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 23/02/2021 08:32

Boiled potatoes are lovely with butter, salt and pepper. No need to gild gold.
