To serve boiled potatoes

Much stroppiness and comments and moaning because when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied.. Surely everyone eats boiled potatoes for dinner in UK sometimes aren't they an English staple part of our traditional diet for context I didn't serve just boiled spuds I served with peas carrots and salmon encroute (shop bought but nice) are they just spoilt? We had pasta yesterday beautiful tapas day before Indian night before fresh fish etc etc it's not like they have to eat it every day I think they are too used to lovely exotic food and are just being ungrateful shits. Or are boiled potatoes actually that bad?

@ChristmasFluff

I'm English and regularly eat boiled potatoes. Perfectly normal, and how anyone can call a decent foodstuff 'grim', like it's someone's skidder-ridden pants is a mystery to me.

Boiled potatoes do need some sort of moisture though - parsley sauce, or gravy for instance.

Because this is mumsnet and if you do anything more than sniff a carrot once a week you're a fat heifer who is single handedly destroying the NHS!
jerometheturnipking · 23/02/2021 09:06

Boiled potatoes are the worst of all the potatoes. The only way they're passable is if they're boiled baby potatoes in some sort of herby or garlic butter.

Racoonworld · 23/02/2021 09:06

I wouldn’t eat them. I got given them as a kid and they were the worst dinner. It’s just as easy to throw potatoes in the oven, so no need to boil.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 23/02/2021 09:07

Why did you lie to them when they asked?

I wouldn't served boiled potatoes with salmon en croute unless they were baby potatoes.

FreeAt50 · 23/02/2021 09:08

I am with you OP, love a plain boiled potato. ANY form of potato in fact.

Weepingwillow22 · 23/02/2021 09:08

I don't see the problem. Just let them have some butter and mustard and they can be yummy mashed potatoes.

inappropriateraspberry · 23/02/2021 09:09

If you've got 'normal' potatoes, keep the skins on, chop roughly and boil. Then crush them - don't mash - with a bit of butter. Crushed potatoes sounds a lot better than boiled!

SleepingStandingUp · 23/02/2021 09:10

@UntamedWisteria

Any form of potatoes is redundant with salmon en croute.

The pastry is the carb component of the meal.

Agree with other boiled new potatoes are fine.

For maincrops, it takes 2 minutes to add butter and milk and make mash. So why wouldn't you?

But what about

Pie and chips
Pie and mash
Chip butty
Mash butty
Lasagne and chips
Pasta bake bad garlic bread
Cheese and potato pie and chips

Geez I want a chips and egg butty now

diddl · 23/02/2021 09:12

I'm guessing the problem is that you lied?

I would probably serve plain boiled potatoes with that and some sauce unless there was enough sauce in the salmon.

I love mashed potatoes but wouldn't want them with that.

New potatoes ideally, but if not...

SleepingStandingUp · 23/02/2021 09:12

If you like boiled then fine, but I wouldn't lie to them and for the sake of a few minutes I'd have mashed theirs. I wouldn't deliberately serve them something I know they don't like.

It's like saying I like plain bacon sandwiches so no one can have sauce or egg on theirs

coffeeandgin26 · 23/02/2021 09:14

Boiled potatoes are the work of the devil.

I have put many weird things in my mouth in my life. I have eaten (intentionally) insects. Snails.

I will never allow a boiled potato to go in my gob. Revolting little balls of blandness

lottiegarbanzo · 23/02/2021 09:15

But you did lie. They asked 'nice (whatever that is) or boiled?', You said 'nice' but gave them boiled.

Are you trying to pretend boiled potatoes are nice, so playing word games with them?

I think boiled potatoes (in skins) are fine, good with some things, your meal sounds good. But I'd still be annoyed with you for lying.

yumscrumfatbum · 23/02/2021 09:15

I love boiled potatoes, I mash them for everyone else and eat mine unadulterated.

PattyPan · 23/02/2021 09:19

Boiled new potatoes are just as bad if not worse than boiled big potatoes. Boiled skins are 🤢

schnubbins · 23/02/2021 09:20

I grew up in Ireland and so like most of the rest of the country we had potatoes in some shape or form on the table every day. There was a big sack of them , earth and all bought at regular intervals . We ate absolutely mountains of them and the older we got the more potatoes were cooked. My brothers loved them also.I often wonder considering the amount of potatoes and bread with lashings of butter that were eaten that time 70's and 80's why none of us were fat
I still love potatoes but never boil them .I steam them in my steam oven My kids love them even just with salt and butter.

FuckyouCovid21 · 23/02/2021 09:22

There's no reason why the others couldn't have just mashed their own potatoes on the plate or you know, cooked their own fucking food if they didn't like it

StopGo · 23/02/2021 09:22

MIL had to peel enough spuds for 7 every evening so mashing or roasting was a step too far for her. DH refused to eat plain boiled main crop potatoes but always offered to do the mashing.

My Irish family are off the big dish of potatoes in their skins on the table. Stick your fork in and try not to burn your thumb.

My kids prefer pasta, rice, cous cous to spuds in any form.

midnightstar66 · 23/02/2021 09:23

I've never cooked a boiled potato, I remember them as a child and they were incredibly boring. I do sometimes do baby potatoes boiled with mint then buttered but even they are a bit dull. Potatoes definitely benefit from oil and a cooking method to make them crispy

ancientgran · 23/02/2021 09:26

Potatoes (known as The Food of the Gods in this house) are wonderful in all their guises, fried, boiled, roasted, baked, sauted I love them all.

Atalune · 23/02/2021 09:27

Bleeeeuuurgh! Reminds me of my childhood 🤢

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 23/02/2021 09:29

Revolting - never eat them!! Boiled new potatoes with butter abs skins on fine, lovely even. Peeled boiled white potatoes absolutely inedible unless served with loads of butter (so you're effectively making your own mash on your plate).

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/02/2021 09:29

So you did lie......

MyLittleOrangutan · 23/02/2021 09:29

Ew no. Skin on new potatoes with butter, fine. Mash, great. Chopped up potatoes just boiled, no, sounds like something my grandma would have been served. I think everyone's made it clear they dont like it so why keep serving it.

yesyoudoknowme · 23/02/2021 09:30

If you've gone to the hassle of boiling them just mash them with butter - boring manky to delish in seconds!

Anne1958 · 23/02/2021 09:30

I think boiled potatoes are delicious.
