To feel proud of myself today?

Ellagaard · 22/02/2021 19:23

I have PTSD, depression and anxiety. I've struggled all my life with confidence and my family have always treated me like the black sheep and never check in to see how I am.

I'm on my own all the time and for the first time in I can't remember how long I've actually managed to have a bath and brush my teeth, I know it's a small step and something people do everyday but I honestly cannot remember the last time I have done that.

I've cleaned up round the house and made myself a proper meal tonight.

I don't have anyone to talk to IRL and my family are ashamed of my mental health issues so I just wanted to come here and I'm not sure just say that I feel a little proud of myself today.

If I'm not alone in feeling this way I hope it improves for you I truly do because I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

OK @Ellagaard. Hear this, and hear it once: YOU ABSOLUTELY ROCK.

Always know that. The reason you did the things you did today is because you know how to look after yourself. Nobody needs to tell you that that's a good thing: you know it's a good thing. You wouldn't have posted otherwise; you're pleased with yourself, and so you should be. Start listening to the bit of you that just knows stuff. That is the real you. The inner you. The kick-ass you.

In the nicest possible way, there is nothing special about you. Nothing especially rubbish or shoddy or lax or inadequate, nothing you are especially destined to fail at, or deserve negative judgment for. You are just the same as everybody else; you're good at some stuff, bad at other stuff. You have days where stuff goes right, and days where stuff doesn't.

But, just like the rest of us, you are amazing in your individuality. Nobody has the same combination of traits as you. Absolutely nobody. And that's why you rock, just like we all do.

You haven't been conditioned to think this way, but you can learn it. Same for me. Start by listening to that bit of you that just knows. The bit of you that your family have constantly silenced, for years, until it's hard to even hear it. You might even be angry with them for that; listen to that anger. Once you've tuned in and can hear it, move forward to fully respecting that inner voice. It will guide you to a healthy life, healthy relationships, and a good strong loving relationship with yourself.

Yesssss! Not at all unreasonable!
Be kind to yourself, be consistent even if it's only small elements of today that you could manage everyday or even every other.
What a lovely post op!

Well done!! Of course you should be proud, that’s brilliant. I’ve been there myself, right at the bottom with PTSD and severe depression and I know how hard it can be to do these things

Pinkfreesias · 22/02/2021 20:20

Be kind to yourself and proud of your achievements.

InsideOfEmptiness · 22/02/2021 21:26

Well done. You are absolutely entitled to be proud of yourself. I know what it's like to feel like even moving from the sofa, never mind showering, is an insurmountable task.

You're strong and brave and doing great.

flappityflippers1 · 22/02/2021 21:34

This is amazing well done OP! Flowers

I will forever remember the day I got up and had a shower, and got dressed. I have GAD and was in an episode of MD at the time (this was 11 years ago) - I’d been sleeping on the floor as a bed “was for normal people”, not getting dressed, not washing, I could barely move. Just the thought of working, interacting with people, going outside was too much. One day I thought to myself - just a little step, just a shower and change into joggers and a t shirt. I’ll always remember how proud I was of myself that day, and it was my first day of true recovery.

I always remember feeling like I was at the bottom of a massive deep dark well, and a concrete step was built with that shower and change of clothes. I could climb that step, and build another. 3 weeks later I slept in a bed again for the first time in forever.

Well done you, it truly is an achievement Flowers

NoCherryNoDeal · 22/02/2021 21:34
