My nephew lost control of his R/C car and it went into the road. A few seconds later a woman in a Discovery ran right over it but apparently without batting an eyelid. She didn't slow down or stop either before or after. It was like she'd just flattened it in passing. Then the acknowledgement came. A couple of minutes later she pulled up outside the drive, wound down her window, and asked him the most incredible question. "Did you enjoy that?" She was furious, and rude, and he was in tears. That seemed to give her an answer but all she did then was drive off again. No apology, nothing. AIBU to expect better?

OP posts:
Wherrsmaclickypen · 22/02/2021 19:33

Happy to state that if I had been the driver I would have been a lot ruder. A lot.

Your account is incredibly biased - 'didnt bat an eyelid' but yet was sufficiently motivated to return?

We have no idea whether the driver was competent or careless, vigilant or on the phone. Moral character and advanced motoring certificates notwithstanding you CAN however be assured they got a fright. A loud impact of something moving and running into the road in front of her.

A plastic toy will not have been this poor woman's first thought. Her response will have been adrenaline-fuelled, and totally excusable.

I cant believe you posted this looking for support.

I've never said this on MN, in all my years, and although other MNers have long since stopped saying it, I think I should be allowed just once, to a post that seems appropriate:

Haveyouallgonequitemad are you on glue?

toocold54 · 22/02/2021 19:34

I completely understand why she ran over it - even if it’s a cat you shouldn’t swerve incase you cause an accident but I don’t understand her asking if he enjoyed it! Do you think she thought he did it on purpose?

CookEatRepeat · 22/02/2021 19:35

I'd have been terrified of what would happen if I swerved, braked, or ran over it. Running over it would be the safest option, but even then you don't know exactly how the car would react. I'm a Discovery driver.

PolytheneHam · 22/02/2021 19:35

What a horrible cow!

He's also 4 years from being 7 he could have learning difficulties have a mental age of 2 and it doesn't make it OK for a grown woman that doesn't know him from anywhere to speak to him like an absolute bitch fgs you lot are eeeevil
5 years from being 7 actuaaaaally

toocold54 · 22/02/2021 19:36

I’d also bet that he was playing chicken with real cars on the road,

I’m also wondering if he was being silly and purposely driving the R/C car in the road.

nimbuscloud · 22/02/2021 19:36

A grown woman against a 12 year old playing with a toy is bullying

The op - the 12 year old’s aunt - was right there beside him. He wasn’t alone.
@Lockheart hard?? No that is the bitch woman driving the car I stick up for people that can't stick up for themselves a grown woman against a 12 year old playing with a toy is bullying
🤣🤣🤣

So what should she have said to the almost teenager who put her at risk by obstructing the road she was driving down?

B33Fr33 · 22/02/2021 19:38

Be should find a more suitable place to use his car. She should learn to communicate better. 'Did you enjoy that?' Doesn't really mean Jack shit. But then it was probably the most off road her oversized car will ever do.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 19:39

I'd put money on it. Not sure how a 12yo can lose control of a toy made for toddlers.

Also guessing it was in the middle of the road rather than by the curb.

Hepsie · 22/02/2021 19:40

Have you ever spent time in prison? Just wondering like...

Sadsiblingatsea · 22/02/2021 19:40

This is how people in flashy cars behave. She should have been driving more slowly in a residential area.

How do you know how fast she was going?

Noone could stop with a few seconds notice. Not possible. Don't let your car envy/hatred cloud your judgement.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 19:43

The anti nice car jealous loons are out I see. Pathetic

brassmonkeywife · 22/02/2021 19:44

I think that may have been the best lesson the little chap learned in a lifetime - he'll be a lot more careful of roads and traffic from now on. I'm sure the driver was thinking "it could have been a child running into the road after the R/C car ...." and was in shock.

Lemonsyellow · 22/02/2021 19:54

Yes, she clearly thought he did it on purpose. Many people would think that. I would too.
MsFogi · 22/02/2021 19:54

Bloody lucky your nephew didn't cause a serious accident.

CanofCant · 22/02/2021 19:56

@Haveyouallgonequitemad

What an absolute nasty bitch. So what if child was playing near road where he probably shouldn't thats what they do he could have been told off no need to flatten his toy and then gloat and bitch about it. I get she may not have been able to stop but to come back and do that she is no better than cruella de ville I would have taken her number plate and probably screamed at her and possibly kicked her car evil witch
😂 Is this satire? It must be.
allsayingthesamething · 22/02/2021 19:56

I wouldn't have apologised and would have expected you to take it more seriously. You could have caused her to have an accident. She was probably very shaken up, wondering say first what she'd hit. Don't let children use those cars where there is any possibility of this happening. That shouldn't have to be said.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/02/2021 19:56

Do you have third party liability insurance? You might want to check before the next time your preteen sends a moving object into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

BettysButtons · 22/02/2021 20:00

Your nephew was in the wrong.

It's horrendous having something (cat, rabbit, remote control car...) appear out of nowhere whilst driving.

Did he apologise to her?

When she said 'Did you enjoy that?', I bet she meant 'Did you enjoy scaring the life out of me?"

Nobody's really covering themselves in glory here, not the OP for her lax supervision, not the child for letting the toy out onto the road, not the driver for being rude, although if she were annoyed I can understand that to some extent. And I always find driving related threads eye opening. Where I drive you're continually on the look out for pheasants, who are on a continual mission to dive under your wheels. You do need to be aware when you're on the road that anything could appear on it and you might need to take evasive action, or take a split second decision that actually braking or swerving might be worse than driving at whatever it is.
