Wisdom tooth

Posting for traffic, I'm in pain!

Changed user name

Help any dentists out there. Had lower wisdom tooth pulled yesterday and am in agony today. Emergency dentist so can't go back, would rather avoid it anyway. Think I have dry socket from the online leaflet, will it heal itself if I grin and bare the pain?

(Might be able to get stronger painkillers off my gp as this is easier than an nhs dentist in a pandemic (or normal times).)

If its dry socket I would call 111 in the morning and see if you can get an appointment. You may be able to 'get over it'but it could have an infection in which case antibiotics may be required. The best thing to help with the pain is the socket cleaned out an dressed at a dentist.

HaveeeeYouMetTed · 21/02/2021 23:45

I was in agony before having my wisdom tooth removed but the pain I was in afterwards was unbearable. I didnt have dry socket. It was just a very painful healing process. So it could be 'normal' even though I know that doesn't help. Obviously it's worth it in the end. However, I'd call 111 tomorrow. If it is dry socket it really does need sorting.

SanguineParadise · 21/02/2021 23:53

I had my wisdom teeth pulled and was in horrible pain for 3 days (the third day was the worst). I had to have liquids/soft foods for over 2 weeks. You might not have dry socket - as an earlier poster said, it is just a very painful healing process. Dry socket usually also doesn't develop that quickly (i.e. less than 24h after your teeth were pulled).

Thelnebriati · 21/02/2021 23:54

If its the next day its more likely to be swelling and pain from the surgery as its a bit soon for dry socket, unless the hole is so large its too big for a clot.
But don't just grin and bear it, get stronger pain killers.

Sparkleandshine1 · 22/02/2021 00:12

Dentist here... contact the surgery. If it is a dry socket, it is cleaned out and dressing is placed and you feel loads better straight away and may need antibiotics too. Don't put up with it, it's easily dealt with. Good luck!

Thank you!

Have work this morning and will see how I am at lunchtime when I finish. Perhaps the clinic will fit me in at the end of the daySmile

How are you doing today? I had a lower one out today. Numbness wearing off and I'm scared 😂 2 paracetamol taken and a soothing hot water bottle on my face. And im starving!

Mary46 · 22/02/2021 16:23

Hope u ok soon op. I got one out last summer they are not pleasant. I found antibiotic did help.

SanguineParadise · 22/02/2021 23:32

How are you doing? Did you manage to see the dentist? Has the pain subsided?

MaryBoBary · 23/02/2021 14:57

I've just had mine out today, I'm feeling very sorry for myself. It is so swollen and painful and I've got a headache too Sad

Member984815 · 23/02/2021 15:36

The first one I got out I had complications during , it wouldn't stop bleeding and was opened back up and packed and restitched I looked awful the side of my face was badly bruised very painful then I got an infection and had to take 2 courses of antibiotics my advice is get it looked at as soon as you can . You may need stronger pain relief

MrsDThomas · 23/02/2021 16:33

@MaryBoBary oh 🤒 are you still numb?

Which one did you have taken out?

I found paracetamol Was a better painkiller than nurofen but you can take both so please do. I had 6 hours sleep and then struggled but i think it was the wind that woke me. Relax on the sofa and im eating. Sandwich with cheese spread and jelly. Pasta with sone cheese sauce for tea do no chewing involved.

Be kind to yourself. Its more than a procedure, its a bloody operation!

Emeraldshamrock · 23/02/2021 16:58

It is normal to be in pain, a week.
Rince your mouth often with warm salt water and take lots of pain killers.
Keep an eye for infection.
I was in pain for 2 weeks I'd the bottom and top last month.
Just had bottom left done today, I'm still numb I was hopeful it wouldn't be so mad.
Think long-term.
For me honest the pain and recovery was much tougher than a 9lb baby born without pain relief.
I didn't want this one put today but went with it.

Emeraldshamrock · 23/02/2021 16:59

@MaryBoBary I hope it heals soon too.

MaryBoBary · 24/02/2021 06:58

It was a top one for me. When I got home yesterday I fell asleep and must have rolled on to that side because I woke up with blood coming out of my mouth and in agony, but it's not so bad now. I have been awake since about 5 but not really in pain, just couldn't sleep on my favourite side! It's a bit swollen today but I'm just going to keep alternating the paracetamol and ibuprofen. They also gave me some corsodyl mouthwash to start using from today. An easy day for me too, not working today, just watching married at first sight Australia!

Emeraldshamrock · 24/02/2021 08:55

It's funny we all had dental surgery. Mine is grand this morning which is great, it came out easy bottom left side.
I'll never forget the pain last month with top and bottom right side, top right is still sore bone is exposed, those in lots of pain get an antibiotics, see a dentist. I left mine a week thought it was healing pain not exposed bone.

Emeraldshamrock · 24/02/2021 08:58

They also gave me some corsodyl mouthwash to start using from today Tip corsodyl will burn in the wound, mix half with warm water. My professor dentist advice Students operated as he supervised.

MrsDThomas · 24/02/2021 12:56

Im doing the salt water rinse🤢 bloodyhell😂

Im in work today. It still hurts but i need something to do and we are so busy. Been up since 5am, desperate to sleep on my left cheek.

Wandering what to have for tea. Any suggestions for the next few nights please?

Emmaaa1990 · 24/02/2021 12:58

I had my two top ones out a few years back and it is a painful after experience, I ended up getting dry socket! Managed to go back and they stuffed clove oil stuff into it. Hurt like fuck but did the trick! Definitely try and chase them up to get back, it's awful. Hope you feel better soon!

Emmaaa1990 · 24/02/2021 12:58

@MrsDThomas I ate a lot of mash potato/jacket potatoes, soup anything soft just take it easy! Ice lollies might be good?

UrAWizHarry · 24/02/2021 13:14

If you have dry socket you will absolutely know about it, it's excrutiating.

Some pain and discomfort is to be expected but if it's that bad go back to the dentist.

Emeraldshamrock · 24/02/2021 13:29

I thought I'd dry socket the pain was severe, I didn't apparently it is much worse.
My bone is exposed on the top right one after extraction causing pain, it isn't fully recovered.
I'm delighted how yesterdays went mild pain.

MaryBoBary · 24/02/2021 20:06

I had spaghetti and tomato sauce tonight. I haven't needed to take any painkillers today which is good... but I feel like I'm waiting for it to get painful again! My OH had a look today and could see a few stitches so there's no open hole which is reassuring. I still haven't had the guts to have a feel of it with my tongue!

MaryBoBary · 24/02/2021 20:27

I spoke to soon. It's just started to swell and throb but I've taken some ibuprofen.
