Neighbour using bin

Happycat1212 · 21/02/2021 20:02

I’ve been a bit unwell so haven’t taken my bin in this week until now and it is absolutely full to the top! I wouldn’t mind the odd item or bag but the bin is over flowing and it was pretty heavy dragging up the steps to my house. Aibu in thinking this is taking the piss?! It’s clearly my upstairs neighbours and they do this a lot basically if I don’t bring it in the will fill it. Why oh why do people use other people’s bins?!

My old neighbour use to do this in a stealthy way, our bins go out on a monday and tend to get emptied around 10am ( so no chance of over sleeping and missing them ) My neighbour use to do me a favour and put my bin out on sunday mornings , and in the process fill it up with all their crap cos he could not be arsed recycling it meant it was always to full for me to get the last of my rubbish in .
I stopped him doing it by wrapping a chain round the lid and our adjoining fence and told the i had to do it because some cheeky swine kept putting their rubbish in it .
He had the temerity to act shocked at the cheek of whoever it was

Happycat1212 · 21/02/2021 22:40

My mum is saying I should go and empty it all and put it back in their bin. There is no way I’m touching anyone else’s rubbish! I’m just annoyed now because my bin is full and isn’t taken until Friday so now I have nowhere to put my own rubbish, filling someone else’s bin to the absolute top 2 days after bin day is just rude!

  1. Put their rubbish back in their bin
  2. Tell them to take their rubbish out of your bin
  3. Put your rubbish in their bin
Chloemol · 21/02/2021 22:51

Get a lock for your bin

Knock on the door and ask them to remove the rubbish and stop using your bin

freeandfierce · 21/02/2021 22:53

My neighbour does this as they don't recycle. I see them when I'm working creep into my back yard and dump their crap in my bin. They deny it when I ask them. We had no collection for five weeks due to our road being dug up for gas pipes and they filled my bin to overflowing. I'm going to get a lock for it, why are they so rude, if people recycle it frees up so much bin space!

Longdistance · 21/02/2021 22:55

Remove their rubbish from YOUR bin, pop it on their doorstep, put your rubbish in it.

BadMotherLover · 21/02/2021 22:57

OP you need to pull on your big girl pants. Empty their rubbish into their bin. Tell them to stop it.

Happycat1212 · 21/02/2021 22:57

It was so heavy I could barely pull it up the steps! Makes me wonder what’s in there like it was full of bricks or something. Mine is never that heavy even on bin day! I might empty it all out tomorrow then I just didn’t want to touch it tonight in the dark as god knows what’s in there could be dirty nappies for all I know 🤢

My neighbour did this last week. I stacked it all on their door step. I Keep finding there take away rubbish in my bin as well and I throw it on their step. Sounds petty but we have a small bin and 5 people and can fit no more than our own rubbish.

Bbq1 · 21/02/2021 23:02

Put gloves and a mask on, remove all their rubbish from your bin, deposit it all into a bin bag then knock on their door and ask them pleasantly not to do it again and why.

Happycat1212 · 21/02/2021 23:02

I have 4 children so my bins are normally full which they know. So even more cheeky even when my bins are full I’ve never used theirs

purplecorkheart · 21/02/2021 23:03

Is it a wheelie bin? I know you should not have to but consider investing in a tilt and turn bin lock. Saved a lot of stress (particularly if you pay by weight of bin).

CoRhona · 21/02/2021 23:09

As pp - buy a bin lock. Your neighbour is a CF.

FrangipaniBlue · 21/02/2021 23:32

Assuming they've filled yours first to save their own, which is probably sitting empty or at least partially empty in their garden, I would just swap the bins round.

KingstonTownThePlaceILongToBe · 21/02/2021 23:36

Had this, you definitely need to put it back in or by their bin so they get the hint.
After putting it back my neighbour then put it back in my bin, cheeky mare. I put it all by her gate then and she hasn't done it since.

PenfoldPenny · 22/02/2021 00:21

Why bother moving it now that its already full of their mess? I would empty it of their stuff and then move it. Then order a bin lock. Problem solved (I hope!)

Happycat1212 · 22/02/2021 00:23

I guess I moved it to stop them putting anymore in, it’s filled to the top but I know they load there’s till the lid won’t shut I’m sure they can fit an extra bag or 2 if they tried.

Gravity bin lock
www.amazon.co.uk/BritishBins-Gravity-Lock-Wheel-Bins/dp/B00SFMIXA4?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Means you dont have to worry about locking it after it's been emptied, locks itself

Belledan1 · 22/02/2021 06:33

I put things in my elderly neighbour's bin when we have extra rubbish as having a sort out of garage gradually but she has told us we can. I do it the night before bin collection when it is out on the top of her drive ready for the next day collection as they come early and would only put a tied up bin bag in there if there is room. We recycle too. There is no way I would put anything in it in the week until I know there is room. Very cheeky.

SpilltheTea · 22/02/2021 07:26

I dumped it all on their doorstep and got a bin lock.

LunaHeather · 22/02/2021 07:31

As long as you're sure it's them, go and tell them to sort it.

In my previous place, we had all sorts from other blocks of flats using our bins. We had to build a little section with a lock.

ScaredOfDinosaurs · 22/02/2021 07:36

You don't need to actually touch the rubbish. Drag it to their front doorstep, tip bin on side, open lid, tip upside down. Done. Who cares if it makes a mess, thats on them isn't it?

HikeForward · 22/02/2021 08:22

Our neighbour sometimes does this but only if the bin has space and he’s put it out for us. I wouldn’t be happy if he was overloading it or filling it then leaving it for us to drag out!

Can you put a sign on your bin with your house number and ‘please don’t use our bin’ or something?

TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe · 22/02/2021 08:40

While I like the idea of tipping the rubbish out on their doorstep, be very careful. Unless you can prove that the rubbish is theirs you could end up getting prosecuted for fly-tipping yourself.

FamilyOfAliens · 22/02/2021 08:44

Definitely get a bin lock.
