Returning back to work after 6 years ..aibu?

I'm 35 and haven't had a job since later 2014.
Basically I had a breakdown
My mum died and I couldn't cope.
We were best friends and I developed anxiety and depression.
I didn't leave the house for a year as I was terrified incase I passed out.
I had many physical problems (caused by anxiety ) and I didn't see a way out.
I was living off £110 a week and I had no life.
Anyway fast forward 6 years I'm better than I was,I can go out etc etc
I still have negative thoughts (you can't do this, not good enough ) but I can shake them off.
I signed off ESA on Friday and it was such a scary thing as it felt final.
I start my full time job tomorrow.
It's a 25 min bus from home (which isn't bad)37 hours per week.
It's gonna mean each month after bills /rent /food I will have about £700 spare a month (which I've never had) so will be able to afford to do nice things.
Anyway ..I did the right thing?
My friends kept saying "are you deffo ready" but if not now I'll never be.
Aibu to feel like this?
I'm gonna be ok aren't I ?

Well done 👏 OP
Take one day at a time
You’ve got this !
You should be proud of yourself

Yesmate · 21/02/2021 09:39

Well done OP. You will do great. Plenty of organisation over the next few weeks and you will be fine. Go you!

peak2021 · 21/02/2021 09:42

Congratulations, hope it goes well.

angieloumc · 21/02/2021 09:43

Well done you, that's brilliant! I'm sure you will be fine, you've got this.

Muskox · 21/02/2021 09:45

Congratulations on your new job! I took several years off to be a SAHM, and returning to work felt very strange and scary at first. In three or four months you should be feeling more settled. I hope it goes really well for you Smile

EuroTrashed · 21/02/2021 09:45

Well done. You will quite probably find that keeping your mind and body busy in the day is a fantastic distraction that improves your mental outlook too. Good luck, and enjoy it x

Livpool · 21/02/2021 09:48

Well done OP
.
You will be great

VaVaGloom · 21/02/2021 09:49

Good luck OP. A new chapter to a fuller life. Be prepared to be tired for a while but it will be worth it and you will get that ‘Friday feeling’ and have money towards the spa day /hols/ treats. I’m sure your Mum would be pleased for you. Enjoy meeting your new colleagues & don’t worry it always takes a little while to learn everything & settle in. Congratulations Flowers

Blue2021 · 21/02/2021 09:51

Well done! You will be fine. Just be prepared for the morning, maybe prep dinner for tomorrow night today so you have it ready for when you get in. Be proud of yourself. You will be probs extra tired for a couple weeks until you get used to it so look after yourself. Keep thinking of your spa day and all the nice things you can do with your hard earned money. Good luck! Let us know how your first day goes xx

GhostCurry · 21/02/2021 09:57

Congratulations OP! This is great!

Dontjudgeme101 · 21/02/2021 09:57

That’s fantastic news! Congratulations on your new job. Good luck for tomorrow’s. 💐

JulietMadeChutney · 21/02/2021 09:59

You've got this. The first few days maybe a bit of an change (I found it so when I went back to work after being a SAHM for 8 years). Don't let the change put you off. It will be natural to have a few wobbly moments but stick with it.

And if for the first couple of weeks everything at home slips a bit...that is OK too. Beans on toast for tea, sandwiches, something easy from the freezer - whatever it takes to get yourself back in the swing of it.

This is great, and exciting. Wishing you lots of luck on your first day.

Calmdown14 · 21/02/2021 10:00

Good luck. Remember that the first week or so in a new job is exhausting even if you've just moved from another one. It's a massive mental challenge having to smile and look enthusiastic for everything! So if you find it tough, don't be too quick to write yourself off. Try to remember that feeling like this does pass quickly and focus on the long term benefits over any short term difficulty to come through.
Also remember that after a six year gap and in one of the toughest jobs markets we've had, they chose you so do what everyone else does and fake it til you make it. They can see your potential so you should too

WooYa · 21/02/2021 10:03

Well done! You'll be great and just remember.... they wouldn't have given you the job if they didn't think you could do it!

Shopaholic100 · 21/02/2021 10:09

Well done op! You can do this😀. Could you please send some inspiration my way, I need to find a job too but don’t know where to start.

Skatastic · 21/02/2021 10:16

You are totally amazing I hope you have the best first day EVER 💗

RaininSummer · 21/02/2021 10:18

You have indeed done brilliantly to land a job after 6 years away and in the current climate. The advice on sleep and food prep is good And I will take that too as I am returning to full time after years of part time work and am already wondering how to fit everything in. The extra money will be well worth it though and it will be good to have a reason to get dressed up a bit more too so lets get those handbags and lunches sorted. Good luck.

JustAnotherOldMan · 21/02/2021 10:21

You will be fine, just take it easy first few weeks and ease yourself in, just like starting any new job for anyone

cherylprel · 21/02/2021 10:48

I'm a bit of a organised weirdo at times so my plan today is make a chicken curry and a couple of lasagna and just freeze them
I will be home by 5pm just after so will just warm them through

@Shopaholic100 you can do it !! What type of work are you looking for?

OP posts:
YouHaveAuthorityJackieWeaver · 21/02/2021 10:53

Well done OP! Be kind to yourself, you may feel very tired during your first few weeks, so be ready for that. You have come through so much, and you should be proud of yourself! Daffodil

YouHaveAuthorityJackieWeaver · 21/02/2021 10:56

Just seen that you've chosen your handbag tomorrow. I totally get that -I've missed work outfit planning during WFH! I find that putting on 'work clothes' helps to get me psychologically ready for the day - similarly changing into 'home clothes' at the end of the day marks the start of 'me time'

thegcatsmother · 21/02/2021 11:26

I started a new job last month after not working for 15 years. It still feels a bit strange, but is going well so far.....

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/02/2021 11:31

You are amazing. I suffer from depression, generalised anxiety disorder and agoraphobia and all progress is good. You managed to apply for a job and be appointed which shows such amazing progress. My advice would just be to make sure you give yourself time for self care as you get used to working again and try not to see little setbacks as big setbacks. Good luck!

StartingGrid · 21/02/2021 11:36

With a 6 year gap on your CV and having still got the job over probably more competition than ever in recent years, I'm pretty sure you were an outstanding candidate! So very sorry for the loss of your Mum, I'd bet she would be extremely pleased for you now. I have everything crossed it goes well for you tomorrow but I bet you'll be great
