liposuction made me flabbier

LesleyA · 20/02/2021 21:58

I had a little bit of liposuction on my stomach as fat needed elsewhere on my body. AIBU to think that I’m sure my skin is ‘looser’ wobblier than before. I used to have a muffin top but it was ‘sturdy’ for want of a better word kind of thick firm fat and since lipo it’s like my stomach is all jellyish and has a flappy like thing instead of a muffin.

I guess it makes sense.

BMW6 · 20/02/2021 22:03

Well, yes, of course - the underlying fat supporting the stretched skin has suddenly been removed!

Were you not warned / did you not consider this when you decided on lipo?

One of the benefits of gradual weight loss is the skin has time to shrink - but that ability decreases with age, so you may have ended up with very loose skin anyway.

BMW6 · 20/02/2021 22:08

BTW - whatever part of you has had the insertion of your stomach fat will now have stretched skin to accommodate the sudden bulk.........

Did you really not consider any of these implications?

superram · 20/02/2021 22:09

It’s not rocket science, what did you think would fill the gap where the fat had been?

Takingontheflab · 20/02/2021 22:12

It was needed elsewhere!? Sorry, what!?

This is so strange.

SnarkyBag · 20/02/2021 22:15

Well yes I suppose the skin would be looser now. Was this not all discussed as part of the procedure?

pompey38 · 20/02/2021 22:16

Usually liposuction goes hand in hand with a tummy tuck for this particular reason, if is not a lot then you can tone up with sport/sit ups
Takingontheflab- what you don’t understand? she took fat off her belly and injected it in her bottom for example , very common procedure

PinkPanther27 · 20/02/2021 22:18

It could have been used for a breast reconstruction, not sure if the surgeon would have explained the potential implications.

foobio · 20/02/2021 22:19

@Takingontheflab

I think it is used for reconstructive surgery, eg after a masectomy.
M0rT · 20/02/2021 22:22

Its a common surgery for reconstruction after mastectomy.
They take you through the risks of surgery and how they expect to make your breasts look but not really the cosmetic implications for the parts of your body they use.

You can't tone loose skin or fat with sit ups.
dontgobaconmyheart · 20/02/2021 22:26

Well it makes sense unfortunately. What did you have done OP? Did the surgeon not appraise you of this possibility prior? I suppose to some extent it depends on the circumstances but it sounds very upsetting. Hope you are otherwise recovering well.

Immaback · 20/02/2021 22:29

I think this makes sense.
My baby bump was huge, I didn’t gain much weight and was back to pre baby weight within weeks. However... I was left with this deflated balloon empty jelly tummy which never went back to anything resembling what it was beforeShock

Freddiefox · 20/02/2021 22:47

@BMW6

Maybe she didn’t have much choice, or it was the least worse. You sound quite patronising
Jackie2022 · 20/02/2021 22:49

You had a fat transfer?

As far as I’m aware liposuction isn’t permanent, if you gain weight your muffin top will return. Why don’t you try exercise to build abs and firm it up that way?

toocold54 · 20/02/2021 22:53

I have fat on my belly/sides and it is pretty hard to touch but if I lost weight really quickly then there would just be lose skin left and it would be flabby.

I always assumed that when you have lipo they get rid of the excess skin too!

Many people remove fat from their body and put it in a different place eg their breasts, bum etc as it’s less likely that your body will reject it.

Cocopogo · 20/02/2021 22:56

Not surprised at all. Some people look so much worse when they are fat and then lose weight

im5050 · 20/02/2021 23:02

Unless you have lipo with a stomach tuck you will be flabby
I’ve had both at the same time and my stomach isn’t flabby it’s pretty much rock hard and very flat
The best place for lipo on its own is your hips as you are less likely to get flab on your hips
Anywhere else and your pretty much likely to go saggy

LesleyA · 21/02/2021 00:30

Yes it was a mastectomy. They briefed me on how it would be used for reconstruction if the breast but I really didn’t think enough would be taken to warrant a saggy deflated balloon (think other poster described it as this) so after shock of cancer, double mastectomy, chemo, radiation, reconstruction... u didn’t ask of I’d have loose skin esp since this wasn’t me choosing to have cosmetic surgery so I knew nothing about it and just felt quite happy that some of the fat in my muffin would go but didn’t expect this also as I chose a small a-b cup

Thanks for the kind posters and for sharing experiences and thoughts. My plastic surgeon was amazing but I feel I’ve been left with a worse situation on my stomach

I know nothing about liposuction but I really feel for you, having gone through what you have, the liposuction certainly hasn’t been for vanity, and you’re left feeling so badSad

1Morewineplease · 21/02/2021 00:38

It's not a cure. It simply moves the problem somewhere else.

legalseagull · 21/02/2021 07:25

OP if you carry on eating however you were then presumably you'll regain that fat and the skin will firm up again. Maybe call them to ask?

CodenameVillanelle · 21/02/2021 07:50

Again, you can't flatten the tummy with exercise. You can have the most ripped abs in the world but if you have fat covering them they won't be visible.
tuttifritti · 21/02/2021 07:58

Liposuction removes a certain amount of fat cells permanently from that area making it hard to regain weight in that particular place again. You can regain that weight in other areas as the fat cells there will grow to accommodate any excess weight. This was explained to me in a better way by my surgeon when I had liposuction but that's the gist of it.

OP, sorry for your trauma. It may not be an option you want to pursue but I think you can have excess skin removed.
