THANKS A LOT BREXITEERS (and good luck when you order items from abroad)!

I recently bought some art through an online website (think, a bit like Etsy, but not that one). So the item was £400, plus £140 delivery, which I did think it was a lot, but it was being shipped from Russia. Anyway, two weeks later, I get an email from the website company, to tell me the item is being held at the depot and I am required to contact Parcelforce to pay a customs tax. I phoned up and the tax is to the tune of £140. For an item costing £400! Apparently this is the new post-Brexit norm. Just to get what you have ordered over the border!

I’ve also ordered more art from Bulgaria which is apparently in its way now and I’m really worried as this was more expensive (just under £3000). Does this mean I going to be charged another ridiculous amount as customs tax?

I’ve been on to HMRC today and they are no help, beyond saying “yes this is because of Brexit,” “No we’re not sure if you’ve been charged the right amount or why,” and “You will need to pay first and them make a claim if you think you’ve been overcharged.”

So basically, is this the end of ordering from abroad? What madness is this?

No this is way more fun. Winding up a brexiter.

I’m trying to warn people so they don’t get caught out with this like I have been.

To think millions voted for this. It’s an utter joke.

The irony. You got nasty calling OP a princess. 🤣

justasking111 · 20/02/2021 23:51

I ordered a curved monitor from Amazon for DS xmas present, it never turned up so asked for and received a refund. Bought a different one which did turn up. The next day the curved one turned up. Then the company e mailed me and asked me to return it. I asked them how?? A week later they sent an e mail with package labelling asking me to return to DHL, the nearest depot was a thirty mile round trip and in lockdown not allowed. I said I could not do this. Then they e mailed me asking me to hang on to it because customs charges would be levied on them if it was returned and until all that was sorted out it transpired they were in Lithuania. So I have a still boxed, curved monitor under the hall table until god knows when.

So even exporting is a nightmare now.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 20/02/2021 23:51

This has nothing to do with art or the price of flaming fish. Who are people going on about that, Talk snout misfits the point. It has everything to do with Brexit! You could be ordering absolutely anything - tech items, shoes, furniture whatever - same issu
It only has to do with brexit if your items are from the eu
Russia, usa , india are not in the eu and you would of been paying these charges in or out.
If you had bought a piece from france then fair enough that you may of been surprised , but if you have bought art if this value from around the world before you would of paid duty and vat upon import.

littlepattilou · 20/02/2021 23:51

@sst1234 You're not winding me up love. Keep telling yourself that though if it makes you feel better. Flowers I don't mind, it's OK. xxx

I understand that you're angry and bitter that you lost in the EU referendum... Shame Sad

CooperLooper · 20/02/2021 23:51

@NorbertMeubles

My heart bleeds for you OP and the potential additional costs you may incur get your £3k artwork. A problem we will no doubt all be able to relate to in due course. Thinking of you at this sad time.
Lol

Did you not watch any of the news ? And have you never imported from around the world before ? You claim to of done so this can't of been a surprise for the countries you have mentioned apart from one as they are not in the eu ?

Lovely1a2b3c · 20/02/2021 23:54

I'm sure we can all relate to this problem- when I spend £ thousands on art work, I am deeply frustrated by the customs situation :-P .

On the whole I agree that Brexit was a very bad idea but seriously OP you are in a tiny wealthy minority and very few people will relate.

littlepattilou · 20/02/2021 23:54

@NorbertMeubles don't waste your breath. The over privileged on here can't see past the end of their nose, and feel desperately sorry for the poor OP, and the import tax on her artwork. And anyone who speaks up against her, simply doesn't understand art or is a bit thick or is a racist gammon.

Seriously, texbook remoaner reactions. Ignore it. We have had 5 years of it. They are bitter and angry, and it shows... MASSIVELY.

sst1234 · 20/02/2021 23:55

Didn’t even vote to be fair. But as per OPs original post, have you ever heard of Turkeys voting for xmas.

littlepattilou · 20/02/2021 23:56

That should be they are STILL bitter and angry, (after 5 years) and it shows massively!

SqeakyHindge · 20/02/2021 23:56

There have been loads of ‘what you need to know’ especially around import tax/duty.

Also depends on which courier company you use. Fed ex charge triple to say dhl

wonderstuff · 20/02/2021 23:57

Not sure it's the most relatable example, but lots of companies just not shipping to the UK now because it's so expensive. When we were in the EU we used there system and it made sense for companies to set up for shipping to the EU, now the UK has set up it's own system and put the burden of tax on companies or individuals it's not as attractive to set up to cope with the UK system.

Stuff is going to become either more expensive or impossible to import. Regardless of whether it's from the EU or elsewhere because we aren't using EU regs it's become more difficult.

Still completely baffled about why we've done this.

You are right, it’s difficult for people to relate to Ops specific purchase but it’s wilfull blindness to not acknowledge that inflation will impact everyday living and diminish quality of life. Whatever people’s views on Brexit, when imports become expensive, it’s people with the least disposable income that become priced out.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 20/02/2021 23:59

Op speak to the courier company you used they should be able to tell you a rough price at the very least how to roughly calculate it
Each item has a duty rate which can be looked up if you know the tariff code which your supplier should be able to tell you.
You know vat is generally 20% , so when they tell you how to calculate you should be able to work out a rough amount.

Why is it going to be hard from rest of world due to eu regs ? What do you mean by that ?

It isn't about the item or the amount. I feel sorry for OP. I am far from over privileged I'm working class, I live week to week, your comments are attacking OP over her bank balance? What has that got to do with you.
If OP said I ordered medication from Russia for £100 would you get so angry?
The item is irrelevant.

Ohthatsgreat · 21/02/2021 00:03

I think OP is conflating issues. Customs charges have always applied. We just didn’t pay any on goods from the EU. If OP is importing goods from Russia, Israel, India and USA there will have always been charges. Find it hard to see why it’s a surprise and certainly not caused by brexit as the EU doesn’t have customs agreements with those countries.

If you didn’t pay attention where your goods were coming from before, now is the time to start. Also there are plenty of customs calculators to get an estimate of costs, but it’s true the final bill is decided once the goods arrives. It’s likely you’ll also pay a handling fee to the delivery company since their services aren’t free either.

You might not like the charges but importing from countries like the USA have always involved a fee. It’s like the poster on here irked at customs charges for Australian imported products...not brexit related at all.

It’s only since leaving the EU that more people have been exposed to the customs process and therefore seem to find it a ‘surprise’.

Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst · 21/02/2021 00:04

Good evening peasants and upper class art lovers

One is hoping not too many of you get caught out when furnishing your galleries with world art with these charges however as it probably won't affect many, safe to say the vast majority couldn't care 2 hoots to be perfectly frank

Me personally I'm just starring at my walls wondering what to do in my standard family home
I'm wondering about a van gof (is that the spelling peasants??) or a Monayyyyyyyy

then I remembered that Athena and Woolworths shut down years ago and I probably couldn't buy a print locally that the vast majority wouldn't be able to tell apart from the real thing!

As you were!!

I think its because she said russia and then mentions usa and india
To my knowledge duty and vat had always been applicable from russia ( could be wrong ) but def us and india
If she had said bulgaria or had bought from france etc
Its quite worrying that so
Many are unaware of these consequences really as it was heavily discussed.
My personal belief is it will iron itself out eventually as people either get used to it or another way is sorted.

Gobbeldegook · 21/02/2021 00:07

When did Russia join the EU ? 🤣

Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst · 21/02/2021 00:07

@Marinaloves

I agree - funny as fuck my dp has just had a proper belly laugh at this thread and wonders if the OP is available for attendances at weddings, christentings and Bar Mitvas lol

He said she could give most comedians a run for her money

If she ever got over herself that was!
