THANKS A LOT BREXITEERS (and good luck when you order items from abroad)!

I recently bought some art through an online website (think, a bit like Etsy, but not that one). So the item was £400, plus £140 delivery, which I did think it was a lot, but it was being shipped from Russia. Anyway, two weeks later, I get an email from the website company, to tell me the item is being held at the depot and I am required to contact Parcelforce to pay a customs tax. I phoned up and the tax is to the tune of £140. For an item costing £400! Apparently this is the new post-Brexit norm. Just to get what you have ordered over the border!

I’ve also ordered more art from Bulgaria which is apparently in its way now and I’m really worried as this was more expensive (just under £3000). Does this mean I going to be charged another ridiculous amount as customs tax?

I’ve been on to HMRC today and they are no help, beyond saying “yes this is because of Brexit,” “No we’re not sure if you’ve been charged the right amount or why,” and “You will need to pay first and them make a claim if you think you’ve been overcharged.”

So basically, is this the end of ordering from abroad? What madness is this?

I do digital art which I tend to get printed at my clients local printer do you think artists like me are more likely to pick up sales? I also think these charges are crazy my aunt used to send us stuff from China it could be crap or expensive and they would just charge random amounts import tax even if it had been paid on shipping as they decided it was worth more (useually wasn't)

@Marinaloves

This thread is funny as fuck

The jealously

FYI 3.5 k on art is literally fuck all. You wouldn’t get anything decent for that

THIS comment is as funny as fuck.

And no-one is JEALOUS. Do grow up. People just think the OP is just a bit daft really. And rather pathetic...

Callingallmajortoms · 20/02/2021 23:41

All those having a go, have you thought it might actually be the op job to buy and sell art?

SoupDragon · 20/02/2021 23:41

And a lot are too dim to see past the art.

customchaos · 20/02/2021 23:42

Oh and by the way - if, for any reason the tax you are told to pay has been calculated wrongly (eg the sender has written an incorrect amount on the form at the point if dispatch; an exchange rate miscalculation or list paperwork en route), you have NO grounds to dispute the charge. You have to pay the charge first to be able to dispute it. Yes, go on GOV.U.K. and search for the BOR286 form. Fill this in and take your chances that HMRC might get round to your case and issue your refund in the next ten years, Good luck with that and thanks again!

Seriously, are we meant to give a shit that some over privileged princess has had to pay import tax on her European artwork?

Do me a favour. Wink

@Fattydoggy

Dear lord OP. I can’t work out if this is a wind up or not. It reminds me of the ‘Who will serve our coffee at Pret’ moment. Some remainers have not learnt a single thing over the last 4 years.
Is your thought process so limited that you cannot imagine people buying anything other than bread and milk. Is everything beyond that just an unnecessary frivolity that it’s no big deal if prices go up. Do you realize that it works both ways. That if imports become expensive, so do exports and that’s not good for everyone. Oh dear, this thread is worrying. So many people have so little comprehension of how the economy works and how their own standard of living is damaged by association when those with higher disposable incomes are hit.

Yep, but it's not.

Looks like you came here exactly to give that proverbial shit. Hope you are a little lighter now.

You can work out a rough amount of duty and vat and the usa has always attracted this.
Any freight forwarder/ courier can give you a rough amount
They will know the duty amount from the item ( tariff code ) and obviously vat , plus invoice value and some other factors and be able to calculate you a price.
If as you say you regularly import from usa etc you can't of never come across this before.
I have worked in imports for 20 years , people who ship regularly are not surprised and know these things, yes the eu will be new to people but not the rest of the world.
You must if had to pay this before

Ok, so it’s not £3k art, but on a more relatable note, I am pretty aggrieved that I can no longer order whisky (or any other alcohol) on Amazon to be delivered into Northern Ireland because of fucking Brexit. In fact, NI seems to be being shafted on multiple levels by a number of companies who now can’t deliver or are charging exorbitant fees.

littlepattilou · 20/02/2021 23:44

@sst1234 I am searching for a fuck to give about your opinions and comments.

Nope, cannot find any.

Now run along.......

Beforethetakingoftoastandt3a · 20/02/2021 23:45

Dont know why people are being tits, op. But yanbu as ive found the same. My pre-teen had norris nuts merch from australia for christmas and i was irked at the price at customs in December. She also wanted something for her birthday this month, but when i tried to order they are no longer delivering to the uk due to brexit.

customchaos · 20/02/2021 23:45

This has nothing to do with art or the price of flaming fish. Who are people going on about that, Talk snout misfits the point. It has everything to do with Brexit! You could be ordering absolutely anything - tech items, shoes, furniture whatever - same issue.

Haha. Right on cue. That was easy.

Emeraldshamrock · 20/02/2021 23:45

@littlepattilou Who cares if the art was bought for business or pleasure. OP has a right to spend money as she pleases assuming she is not an online fraudster stealing money.

You're all gonna have to pay more for stuff from Europe now

Shame.

Get over it.

SoupDragon · 20/02/2021 23:47

🙄

My point has been proved.

There have been many threads like this where people have been stung with "surprise" customs charges. The fact that this is art is completely irrelevant, it's just a shame some people can't see that and just want to make comments they think are amusing.

littlepattilou · 20/02/2021 23:48

Gonna run off and find my tiny violin now.

littlepattilou · 20/02/2021 23:48

First world problems.

End of.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 20/02/2021 23:48

Shouldn't really be errors either if the paperwork is correct, I don't think I have ever had an incorrect amount all be it for businesses as would always check the paperwork is correct and what is needed as this may vary from
Company to company.
If your going to do this regularly find a good freight forwarder
