Naming babies names that are definitely not what they say

For some reason I can't understand this! Dh disagrees. Am I mad?

Naming a baby after a month, despite being born in a different month? (Referring to the new royal August). What does the name mean then?

I've also known an Autumn born in June and a Summer born just before Christmas in snowy Canada (very out of season!!) I feel like names have meanings and associations in some way, whether you like it or not. And it feels like a mistake? Like they didn't realise? It just feels wrong!

I understand with names with less known meanings e.g. rowan meanings red, because a lot of people won't know that.

But August? We all know it's month number 8 🤦🏻‍♀️ I. Just. Cant.

Why are so bothered about what somebody else names their child?

Notimeforaname · 20/02/2021 17:17

I know a lady called May. And many children with May in a hyphenated first name..Born all times of the year.
Nobody seems bothered by that. Do people named May bother you too?

Notimeforaname · 20/02/2021 17:18

I know a Noel who wasn't born near Christmas..

BrumBoo · 20/02/2021 17:18

I. Just. Cant.

Then don't Hmm.

August is an old Latin name, I really don't get the fuss. Not one I'd personally choose but whatever. Even if it is in allusion to the month, maybe that month has a very special connection for them, along with being a family name. One of the royal children is called Savannah, no one cared for that....

Hopdathelf · 20/02/2021 17:19

You do know the word has a meaning other than being the eighth month of the year?

AngelicInnocent · 20/02/2021 17:19

August is a very old name and comes from the Latin for vulnerable. It's not just the 8th month.

AngelicInnocent · 20/02/2021 17:20

Sorry venerable

MichelleScarn · 20/02/2021 17:20

But the names after a relative called Augustus, and is the month August not named after one of the 'original' Augustus?

AllTheWayFromLondonDAMN · 20/02/2021 17:20

I’ve got an auntie June who was born in October. Always thought that was weird too OP!

NewScone · 20/02/2021 17:20

There seem to be a lot of Estonian wrestlers named August according to Wikipedia. Maybe he is named after one of them.

Sunbird24 · 20/02/2021 17:20

It’s also an adjective meaning esteemed or majestic, and a name - I used to work with a guy called August, nicknamed Auggie.

Notimeforaname · 20/02/2021 17:22

August is fine but Auggie makes me shiver. Theres a manky drug dealing family living near me and one of them is called Auggie

I didnt! This makes more sense, thank you!

I've never heard it in English being referred to anything else, but must be my ignorance!

Oh come on, it's clearly a lighthearted thread Grin is it really just me?

It seems I have offended some people, oops!

It’s a name, and has meaning for them. Get over it and realise it’s nothing to do with you.

Lelophants · 20/02/2021 17:25

Tbh I understand August more than someone calling a baby Autumn when they're born in spring 😅

Or Friday for a baby born on Monday Hmm

I love different names but it just doesn't feel logical somehow.

OP posts:
FelicityPike · 20/02/2021 17:25

It was one of Prince Albert’s middle names.

Lelophants · 20/02/2021 17:25

It's like they just liked the sound of it, you know?

May gets a pass because of May Trees (Hawthorn) and Mayflowers (Lily of the Valley).

RaidersoftheLostAardvark · 20/02/2021 17:28

Loving the thought of the new royal becoming an Estonian wrestler! (I initially thought that was a typo for Etonian wrestler). It's never occurred to me that a person called June would have been born in June- surely the parents just liked the name June??!

year5teacher · 20/02/2021 17:30

Oh my god, who cares what a couple of incredibly rich strangers name their child

CuntyMcBollocks · 20/02/2021 17:30

Who cares??? It's a name, nothing more. My name supposedly means 'desirable' but it really isn't relevant or apt whatsoever.

Thehop · 20/02/2021 17:35

I don’t like it at all but nobody liked my choice for one of mine so
