Naming babies names that are definitely not what they say

For some reason I can't understand this! Dh disagrees. Am I mad?

Naming a baby after a month, despite being born in a different month? (Referring to the new royal August). What does the name mean then?

I've also known an Autumn born in June and a Summer born just before Christmas in snowy Canada (very out of season!!) I feel like names have meanings and associations in some way, whether you like it or not. And it feels like a mistake? Like they didn't realise? It just feels wrong!

I understand with names with less known meanings e.g. rowan meanings red, because a lot of people won't know that.

But August? We all know it's month number 8 🤦🏻‍♀️ I. Just. Cant.

@supersonicginandtonic Noelle?

Popetthetreehugger · 20/02/2021 18:28

My granddaughter born in August has May ( not Mae ) as her middle name ....after her great nan ,nanny may who was born in February .BUT ,she was named after her mum ... who was born on May Day !!! Lalala all makes sense ☺️ And fits perfectly with first name 🙌

FredaFlintstone · 20/02/2021 18:29

when my son was little he really wanted a black cat which he was going to call Snowy. If we had got a cat I would have let him just because it's funny

We used to have the most beautiful cat who was pure white, so we called her Ebony. I also had a Bassett Hound growing up that was the slowest, most lumbering lazy lump of dog ever that was called Bouncer 😂

Sparklesocks · 20/02/2021 18:30

Because they want to.
Utterly mind blowing I know!

mathanxiety · 20/02/2021 18:33

What's wrong with choosing a name you just like the sound of?

mathanxiety · 20/02/2021 18:35

And FYI, May doesn't refer to the month of May.

It's an old nickname for Mary.

supersonicginandtonic · 20/02/2021 18:37

@StrawBeretMoose we did consider it but we're going for Penny instead after Penny Lane the Beatles song. My DP Grandad passed away recently and he loved the song.

slashlover · 20/02/2021 18:38

It's like they just liked the sound of it, you know?

I thought that's what most people did. Do we like it? Does it fit with the surname? Do the initials spell anything weird?

eddiemairswife · 20/02/2021 18:44

I was named after Napoleon's wife as my father was reading a biography of him at the time.

goldielockdown2 · 20/02/2021 18:47

I can't imagine being confused about this.

Significantown · 20/02/2021 19:00

Did anyone ever read Marmalade, who was named after what her Dad was holding, I think? Great series.

MatildaStoker · 20/02/2021 19:13

The month of August was named after the Roman Emperor Augustus.
So it was a name for a person before it was a name for a month 🤷‍♀️

AllFrightOnTheNight · 20/02/2021 19:16

@year5teacher

Oh my god, who cares what a couple of incredibly rich strangers name their child
Pretty much this. The kid won't move in circles that care if he's called August or Jayden or Giles or whatever. There's a Cosima and a Xan in the line of succession....
Livpool · 20/02/2021 19:18

I know a May born in December.
And my name means Christmas and I was born in June

Helpel · 20/02/2021 19:24

I agree OP. A woman from towie called her child Sunday. Baby was born on a Tuesday (or another day not sunday). Odd.
And poor child having to explain to everyone ever "no, I wasn't born on a Sunday actually"

AliceMcK · 20/02/2021 19:27

You do realise the month August was named after a man?

I’m confused about why you find it confusing, there are literally millions of women called May, June, April, January.... I’ve never personally liked names which involve days of the week but I’d not frown on them.

OwlinaTree · 20/02/2021 19:33

I don't know, it seems lacking in imagination somehow to call your child June because they were born in June, but hey, each to their own!

I'm sure people have their reasons for choosing the names they do and what I think about the names other people choose is completely irrelevant.

EssentialHummus · 20/02/2021 19:34

I mean... I dunno. There are some shit baby names out there. This one doesn't seem too bad. (My personal faves are the Angel, Serenity, Prince variety, for when the inevitable happens Grin.)

Sleepyquest · 20/02/2021 19:35

Yes this a million times!!
I know of a Sunday not born on a Sunday. An Autumn born in the Summer and April born in February.
I was going to give my DD a Christmas name but she was born too early.
I just personally couldn't do it because I'm a stickler for detail.
I liked August when I heard it this morning but then thought oooh it's February, not for me.

Octane · 20/02/2021 19:41

The first time I heard someone say the thing about Summers not being born in Summer was on here and I was really surprised anyone would think it matters. It seems totally irrelevant to me.

Like, are girls called Rose supposed to have been born on a bed of roses? Are all Jacks supposed to have been born in cars with flat tyres?

greendress789 · 20/02/2021 19:41

I agree! Call him Augustus instead!

Twizbe · 20/02/2021 19:44

I'm with you. I know an April born in February. She was conceived in April though lol.

CeibaTree · 20/02/2021 19:45

Isn't one of the middle names Hawk - are you a bit put out about that too OP as he isn't actually a bird?

MustardMitt · 20/02/2021 19:48

@Notimeforaname

August is fine but Auggie makes me shiver. Theres a manky drug dealing family living near me and one of them is called Auggie
Ugh Auggie is the worst. It looks and sounds so horrible; August is lovely though.

This doesn’t bother me @Lelophants. If I had a daughter I’d probably call her April no matter the month she was born Grin

goldielockdown2 · 20/02/2021 19:51

I know an Augustus, Gus for short. I love it
