Sex and the City reboot...

I am a huuuge SATC fan and was pleased to hear they are creating a reboot.

But apparently Mr Big won't be in it...nor Steve Brady. Obviously we all know Samantha isn't returning either.

AIBU to think this reboot is a bit pointless if some of the main characters are no longer there? Or should I embrace any new characters they introduce? Probably just being a grumpy twat!

I’m rewatching at the moment and it’s still brilliant IMO Grin it was the backdrop to my early 20s so it reminds me of those amazing years

StillCoughingandLaughing · 19/02/2021 09:53

I’ll watch it out of curiosity, but Samantha not being there will leave a sour taste. The friendships were a core part of the show - knowing one of the main characters (let’s be honest, the best character) is missing because of real-life spats sort of kills that side of it for me. I know it wasn’t exactly a secret at the time that Parker and Catrall weren’t best buddies off-screen, but they played it so well it didn’t matter. Knowing one of them was either actively cut out or couldn’t stand the thought of returning is a different level.

orzo15 · 19/02/2021 10:18

I had no idea they wouldn't be in it. I wonder if they will leave out Harry too? I mean in some ways, life does change like that so it could be realistic but still 2 main characters is disappointing. I will still absolutely have to watch it though!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 19/02/2021 10:23

I think Miranda and Steve definitely would have got divorced, with shared custody of Brady Brady.

mnahmnah · 19/02/2021 10:30

With Miranda being a lawyer i reckon there will have been a tricky divorce with Steve, long legal battle etc referenced as a storyline. I think Harry and Charlotte will still be blissfully happy. I actually quite like the idea of Carrie and Miranda tackling the dating scene again at that age in New York. It’s a new take on it.

As for Samantha, I reckon a dull reference to her having moved away somewhere then no other mention.

x2boys · 19/02/2021 10:42

I think they need to do the decent thing and leave it in the past now ,I still enjoy reruns ,but the women must all be approaching their 60,s now ,btw Brady must be about 20 surely?

Sparklesocks · 19/02/2021 10:46

I wonder if they’ll kill Big off (I’ve heard that was meant to be the subject of the third film originally?) or if they’ll just do ‘oh Big/Steve said the funniest thing this morning...’ as if they’re still there but off camera. It seems like quite a tall order without Samantha too but I’m curious to see how they manage it.

Dontbeme · 19/02/2021 10:47

I'm glad Kim Catrall is not coming back because if the rumour of her story line being Samantha seducing Miranda's son Brady was true it would have been trash from start to finish. I think the series should have ended after the first film, the second was woeful.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 19/02/2021 10:57

I really wanted to like this the first time around but just couldn't get into it. Didn't identify with any of the characters, although I did think the Charlotte and Harry storyline was sweet.
I think Kim Catrall is key to the success of satc and think she will be sorely missed. If they couldn't get all 4 actresses to agree, then they shouldn't do a reboot.

Agree with pp that cold feet was excellent. The reason for that was because they had the original cast.

BrumBoo · 19/02/2021 11:04

It simply doesn't work without Samantha. She is the epitome of female empowerment, self sufficient, in control of her sexuality, body, couldn't give a fuck what anyone thinks, but with moments of true vulnerability. Women need more Samantha's in media. Cutting her out for a narcissist character like Carrie, it's regressive.

LunaHeather · 19/02/2021 11:07

@YoniAndGuy

No Steve?! Ooh I might watch it then.

That awful groaning poor me voice. Utterly slappable in every way. Hated him.

This!
EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 19/02/2021 11:07

The second film was so offensive on so many levels that it should have killed off any further reboots.

orzo15 · 19/02/2021 11:25

@Dontbeme ew that would be vile!

I had heard big was meant to be killed off in another film so wonder if they will take this approach. I think there will definitely be a divorced/single again element of it. Maybe Aidan might make an appearance again! (Hope not)

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 19/02/2021 12:01

Might be OK. I liked the Will and Grace Reboot. I think these things are successful if they retain some threads from the original and then build on them.

Ellpellwood · 19/02/2021 12:17

Hmm. I'm not sure. I think Samantha will just be in LA or something (wasn't she there in the second film? I've blocked it out). Or maybe abroad, different time zone, so she emails.

I think there is enough there between a Miranda/Steve divorce, Carrie being a widow and Charlotte being mum to a teenager or two. But only maybe 8 episodes.

PogoTheClown · 19/02/2021 12:18

Steve was always my favourite. I hated what they made him do in the film.

What about Harry? I loved him too.

I'd imagine he looks like Ed Sheehan now 😆

RubysArms · 19/02/2021 12:32

I bet you £5 and two chocolate hobnobs that the opening scene will be the funeral for one of the characters who've decided against appearing in it.

RubysArms · 19/02/2021 12:36

@Sultanainasalad

I loved it back in the day and still enjoy repeats. Carrie wasn't perfect but never understood why people disliked her so intently, as if female leads have to be likeable. I don't have particularly high hopes for this reboot as in general they are usually never as good, however in theory why is a show with single/ divorced women on their 50's such a turn off. It's not something we see very often and in theory I'm not against it.
Yes that irritated me too. Female leads are analysed in a way that the leads of male shows never are. Some people made such a big deal about not liking Carrie, as though they were special and unique in this regard. I liked her sometimes, I found her extremely annoying at other times.
dayslikethese1 · 19/02/2021 12:51

I like to pretend that the films don't exist. Hated what they did with some of the characters. So I pretend the end of the show is the end and that Carrie ad Big didn't get married (terrible idea anyway). This reboot will probably be terrible but I'll probably end up watching it out of curiosity (and then regretting it) much like the Gilmore Girls reboot.

Cheeseandlobster · 19/02/2021 12:54

Rupert Grint should play Brady. With an American accent of course

Fabpinky · 19/02/2021 13:00

I read that Steve was still in talks to be in the show?

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 19/02/2021 13:24

I agree about the possible story of Steve and Miranda being divorced and sharing custody of Brady.

I personally think it won't be the same; as one PP said Samantha was the comedy of the group, without her there will be a spark missing.

Definitely going to watch it when it is eventually on TV but with low expectations. Hopefully it'll work without those characters...

Oh I see! I'd read about Big in the Daily Fail where it also mentioned Steve wouldn't be returning. But I should probably take what I read there with a pinch of salt!

I don't know if we were always supposed to like Carrie, but we were supposed to root for her and that was extremely difficult sometimes, like when she ended up inadvertently breaking Natasha's tooth and asked Charlotte for money.
