I'm starting a new job a week on Monday.
I was told training was 9-5.30pm
I will be getting public transport and it takes around 25 mins on the bus.
Rang yesterday and said "ok so we will see you 7.45am "
I said I thought it was 9am?
She said "no we've changed our minds and brought it forward a hour"

Aibu to me annoyed ?
It's gonna mean catching the 7.05 am bus
Getting up at 6am
I know it's only a hour but makes a big difference

Congratulations on the job. It's a shame they didn't tell you initially but I dare say this is a one off and you will return to normal office hours once the training has completed. Enjoy the new job. Smile

JayAlfredPrufrock · 18/02/2021 17:35

That doesn’t seem right at all.

Lots of people have stuff to do before work.

breadansggg · 18/02/2021 17:37

There's absolutely nothing I can do about it either which is a shame.

UrAWizHarry · 18/02/2021 17:38

If it's just a one-off or a few days I can understand why you would be annoyed but you just have to suck it up really.

breadansggg · 18/02/2021 17:39

It's going to be 6 weeks then WFH

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 18/02/2021 17:40

You'll be finishing earlier, which is always nice.

I was vaguely miffed about my new job two years ago jumping to exactly the same start time. But it's alright - it more or less guarantees you'll only ever be coming home in the dark for a few days in the year. And at present, as job is a job. Which is not to be sniffed at.

Theunamedcat · 18/02/2021 17:40

Clarify with them if its just for training or if its permanent

I don't mind starting early as it means an early finish

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 18/02/2021 17:41

Is it just annoying, or does it cause you genuine issues, eg with childcare?

Throwntothewolves · 18/02/2021 17:42

Raise is and ask if you can change it if it really matters to you that you start at 9am, but don't make a fuss if it doesn't really matter that much.

After losing his job due to covid my DH eventually got a new job a few months ago, 8.30 to 4.30 Mon-Fri. The hours were really important for child care as I work shifts. The day he started they told him he would be on shifts 'due to covid'. He told them he couldn't work shifts all the time, but could some of the time depending on when I was working and asked if they could be flexible. They said no 'because of covid' so he had to leave. Really galling and disappointing for him.
Some employers think they can do what they want now because jobs are hard to come by, but it's not an excuse to change things on a whim

breadtreat · 18/02/2021 21:48

It's a insurance company.
I'm assuming it's because they are regulated to carry out credit checks.
I think it was just a basic one to check for no ccj/bankruptcy etc

breadtreat · 18/02/2021 21:48

Changed my name and commented on wrong post oops ha ha

peak2021 · 18/02/2021 21:56

Yes if they knew all along it would be 7.45, it is a form of deception. Not that you can do much about it as you note, and it is only for six weeks.

tttigress · 18/02/2021 21:59

Tbh, I would just suck it up, assuming no issues with child care etc. At least you leave early, and also you will save a lot of time with WFH.

KitKat1985 · 18/02/2021 22:00

Annoying, but I'd probably suck it up rather than create a fuss and risk a bad first impression in a new job. At least it's only for a few weeks.

Toorapid · 18/02/2021 22:06

I'd bite their arm off. It's only for a few weeks and the you'll be wfh and finished by 4:30 all summer.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 18/02/2021 22:13

You'll be finishing earlier, which is always nice.

Is it though? Frankly I’d much rather have an extra hour in bed and get home at the same time as everyone else. An early finish in exchange for an early start is only a bonus if you actually want it. ‘Great news - you’re starting work over an hour earlier than you thought you would!’

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 18/02/2021 22:14

After you've been there a few days you can sense whether this is something you could ask them to change? They might not realise you get public transport there?

BashfulClam · 18/02/2021 22:14

I prefer an 8am start, public transport is usually quiet and I finish at 4pm and get done light just now (in Scotland it’s been dark early for soooo long)

SnackSizeRaisin · 18/02/2021 22:16

Annoying but 6am isn't that early to get up. As a short term thing I wouldn't mind starting earlier, but it would ring a slight alarm bell that the company seems disorganised, poor at communication, demanding, and inconsiderate of their staff. It would have been much better if they had asked you if a change to the earlier start time would be possible, or apologize and explain why it was necessary.

StrawBeretMoose · 18/02/2021 22:41

That would really piss me off OP but I don't suppose there is a lot you can do.
Perhaps clarify how long the 7:45 start is to last.

@StillCoughingandLaughing I'm totally with you, I don't give a shit about finishing earlier, I prefer to stay in bed.
Getting up early makes me grumpy (grumpier?). I wouldn't even start WFH at 7:45. By exception I will do a meeting at 9 but usually not before 10. I don't mind finishing later either - my evenings aren't exactly busy right now and I prefer to eat later.

Back in the days of travelling for meetings or conferences I always travelled the night before rather than get up early to travel, I preferred to pay for a hotel and have a decent sleep.

Covidweddingday · 18/02/2021 22:42

If its possible for you to do and its only for 6 weeks I would just suck it up and do it but YANBU to be annoyed. What if you had childcare issues that meant you couldn't do that time - would you be out of a job?!

ToDoListAddict · 18/02/2021 22:48

Sounds like the person training you is a "Morning Person" and likes to finish early and made the assumption you'd love to start and finish earlier too!
This would really annoy me but purely because I am NOT a morning person Grin
But I don't really have any advise or anything- just my sympathy

listsandbudgets · 18/02/2021 22:56

I used to have a job that started at this time and went on until 5pm. I was a bit miffed about it until noon on the Friday of my first week when everyone started packing up to go home. Turned out they didn't work Friday afternoon at all and everyone thought someone else had told me!

Its a pain OP but unless it causes you massive problems with childcare or similar I wouldn't kick up a fuss.Take a good book for the bus and a coffee in a travel cup.

RootyT00t · 18/02/2021 23:33

Everyone is being OTT here. An hour earlier is a change but not really a problem.

Lots of people would just love a job right now OP.

Ilovemaisie · 19/02/2021 00:21

Rooty it's not OTT if you have to rely on public transport to get to and from work. The OP is lucky there is an earlier bus. In many places there might not be. I worked in a job that was terrible for randomly asking people if they could stay late and work some overtime. Many had to say no because the last buses home were at 6pm. There simply was no other way of people getting home.
