I'm starting a new job a week on Monday.
I was told training was 9-5.30pm
I will be getting public transport and it takes around 25 mins on the bus.
Rang yesterday and said "ok so we will see you 7.45am "
I said I thought it was 9am?
She said "no we've changed our minds and brought it forward a hour"

Aibu to me annoyed ?
It's gonna mean catching the 7.05 am bus
Getting up at 6am
I know it's only a hour but makes a big difference

You'll be finishing earlier, which is always nice.

I agree with pps who think this isn’t particularly nice!

Everything seems to have been ramped further forward recently. I’ve noticed that since people are wfh, there’s some sort of expectation that we’ll start work at 8, and maybe finish earlier, rather than using the old commute time to get some extra kip!

I feel for you Op. it’s these bloody morning people again!

RavingAnnie · 19/02/2021 00:52

I would hate this. Not a morning person at all. I have a disability though that would make this way too much for me do I'd have to decline on that basis.

BackforGood · 19/02/2021 00:54

YANBU.
There can be all sorts of reasons why this would be really difficult, or downright impossible for people - from childcare to lack of transport.

I would be concerned about a company that thinks it is acceptable to offer one thing and then completely change that and expect everyone to be able to just fit in with that change.

Whether there is anything you can do about it, and whether you should raise it will depend a bit on how much you want this job, or need this job.
Me, I'd have raised it at the time, but I'm in a more fortunate position than some n terms of life-stage in relation to whether I need a job or not. I suspect I'd advise my adult dc that, whereas it wasn't great, there probably wasn't anything they could do, and they'd have to just suck it up for the few weeks it was on.

independentfriend · 19/02/2021 01:14

I think COVID/public transport wise this is maybe better - probably fewer people on the earlier bus, but I'd be annoyed about it. I'm an owl wouldn't be choosing to start work routinely at 7.45am.

Is it though? Frankly I’d much rather have an extra hour in bed and get home at the same time as everyone else. An early finish in exchange for an early start is only a bonus if you actually want it. ‘Great news - you’re starting work over an hour earlier than you thought you would!’

Then you go to bed one hour earlier. Hmm

@RootyT00t

Everyone is being OTT here. An hour earlier is a change but not really a problem.

Lots of people would just love a job right now OP.

I really hate this attitude, you sound like Norman Tebbit!

I work somewhere where I am respected and treated decently, I think everyone should be. I repay my employer by being more committed as it is a great place to work.

Moving start time from 9:00 to 7:45 is a significant change, as 9:00 is 'standard' and 7:45 is 'early'.

To me, the fact they didn't tell you is rude and doesn't bode well.

I would go along with it, say nothing, act fine - but start looking for a new job as this suggests they are annoying and you can hopefully find a better organisation.

The OP has said there is an earlier bus, so in her case it's not an insurmountable problem.

But for loads of people there might not be an earlier option. When I used to commute by bus I got the earliest bus of the day and it got me to the city I worked in at about five to nine. That was it, no option to go earlier.

Rainbowaftertherain · 19/02/2021 04:52

Somewhere I used to work did this. I was meant to start at 8 and they said theyd changed it to 6.
I said no. I'd applied for a positon because I wanted it, and that was one of the reasons I wanted it
I suggest you do the same

breadansggg · 19/02/2021 10:40

Team leader just rang and it's deffo 8-4.30 for training then after that
It's Monday Tuesday start at 8.30 till 6.30 pm
Off Wednesday
In Thursday and Friday 8.30-5.30pm
Off Saturday and Sunday
So tbh I'm ok with that when I've thought about it
Could be a lot worse

On the face of it they sound like quite nice hours Op, especially when you start getting Wednesdays off.

And later if you took annual leave of 2 days you'd get 5 whole days off in a row!

Good luck with your job!
