To be think this is a waste of money

My DH got a parcel through the post and it was some old looking jigsaw. I asked him why he bought it and he said they're collectible and it's from the 70s.
It looks really old and I could smell it straight away it stinks of stale tobacco - like 40 years of stale cigarettes. He paid £5 and £3 postage for it so it's not exactly breaking the bank but ugh 🤦‍♀️
So AIBU to think it's a complete waste of money especially when I try and keep the house tidy. I don't mind keeping some of our sentimental stuff but not someone else's crap.

I wouldn't be at all worried about him buying something he wanted but not if it's been in a smokers house Envy

pinkandblueflowers · 18/02/2021 17:07

U are being very unreasonable and a bit controlling it would seem. Leave the poor man alone. Presumably it's his house too so he has every right to put his belongings there

riotlady · 18/02/2021 17:09

YABU and a bit harsh! £8 for an old jigsaw is hardly going mad.

Doggybiccys · 18/02/2021 17:10

YABU. Just Febreeze it.

horridhorrid · 18/02/2021 17:11

Put it in another box in which there is some scented cat litter. Leave it for a few weeks and the cigarette smell will be gone downside is it will now smell of cat litter

supersonicginandtonic · 18/02/2021 17:11

Oh dear! I hope my DP doesn't think this about all the lego sets I keep buying for myself!

blacksax · 18/02/2021 17:13

Is anyone else now looking at vintage jigsaws on ebay?

Some of them are lovely.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/02/2021 17:13

Of it stinks I would put it in a bag with baking soda for a day. Then air it. It should help. I remember people doing this with books.
For non smell issues, agree with others, YABU

ChickyNuggies · 18/02/2021 17:15

YABU. I'm pretty sure DO thinks almost everything I buy is a waste of money but he doesn't complain

I think the burger he ordered himself last night was a waste of money since we had burgers in the fridge but again, I said nothing because it's not my business.

£8 on a jigsaw is so harmless it's really not worth getting worked up about. Have you never bought something for that much just to make yourself happy? Coffee and a paperback? A lipstick?

VestaTilley · 18/02/2021 17:17

He’s allowed to buy things if he wants them. He may have researched it, it may be collectible. It wasn’t expensive, so you are being unreasonable.

Akire · 18/02/2021 17:19

You can pay to stream some rubbish Film for the same price that you will never watch again. A jigsaw is hours and hours of time for the same money. Potentially never ending if you keep doing it and then can sell it on. There are worse things you can buy.

TokyoSushi · 18/02/2021 17:24

Ah OP, this sounds really mean, if he's happy, leave him be.

orchidsstillalive · 18/02/2021 17:31

Wow some of you are a nasty bunch. It's a light hearted post. The only reason I don't like it is because it smells so horrible.
Thank you to those who understand but What horrible comments from some people.

Have you never read any of the threads in AIBU before OP? Grin

Laiste · 18/02/2021 17:40

Yeah bi carb OP.

Put the puzzle (broken up) into a ziplock bag or similar and sprinkle a good amount of bi carb in and gently shake it about.

Leave it a day or two and then air it. Shouldn't stink anymore.

can you still buy shake an vac?? Grin

Hmm We don't all smoke inside ya know!

You sound extremely judgmental and snobbish!

You’re throwing a strop over an eight quid jigsaw that’s brought your husband a little bit of pleasure, but we’re all horrible? Okayyyy...
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 18/02/2021 17:50

leave it as open as you can near a bowl of white vinegar
great for removing smoking smells

Akire · 18/02/2021 17:51

You will never get rid of the smoke smell trust me. I’m sorry we all didn’t realise you only joking and wanted funny responses only!

RickJames · 18/02/2021 17:56

I love 1970's stuff, my house is full of it - we eat off 1970's china, all our light fittings, most of our furniture etc. Obviously I clean everything thoroughly but I quite like the smokey whiffs I occasionally get off fabric lampshades or cabinets when I'm cleaning. It reminds me of a simpler time in my life when I was a toddler!

Maybe your DH gets a similar Proustian sort of thing from his old jigsaw - I love my old tat because it looks good aesthetically, the quality is better than nowadays and it just has that comfortable, nostalgic sensation.

1Morewineplease · 18/02/2021 18:01

Maybe you should have stated that your post was light-hearted.
As it is , fresh air and Febreze might be your friends.
Strongly suggest you retaliate, therefore, with a taxidermied stoat or a Victorian China doll with THOSE eyes!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/02/2021 18:02

Noooo. Don't fabreeze it..dry only

thepeopleversuswork · 18/02/2021 18:07

I really couldn't get worked up about this. He spent a modest amount of money he can clearly afford on something which brings him joy for whatever reason. Have you never spent money on a little luxury which you don't need?
