I feel like I either hear people saying it's the best thing they've done. Or the worst. So hoping to get a wider range of feedback.

I get bad ovulation pain and sore boobs. (Currently on my second Implant which is coming to an end)

I don't want to be without hormonal contraception as my periods are very heavy without.

Have given birth vaginally as I think that makes it easier. But my cervix is quite low.

I'm scared of the insertion process/pain and also the strings hanging out. Envy (not envy)

Insertion was easy for me. They make you cough et voilà....it's in!!!

On another note completely, I hated mine lol. Hopefully you'll be grand OP. Good luck 😀

itsgettingwierd · 18/02/2021 10:42

Mixed reports with mine.

First one was extremely uncomfortable, bled continuously but I'd been bleeding for 5 months daily by that point anyway.
Passed out when put in.
It came out after 2 months with a severe heavy period that left me stuck on toilet for 4 hours.

I have another fitted in January. I did nearly pass out during fitting again (we don't know why because there was pain but only for about 5 seconds!). But I'm not aware it's there. Both times my strings have curled so I cannot feel them. And this time I'm spotting a little every 3-5 days and I'm hopeful they'll stop completely.

Remember you can have it out if it doesn't work.

Ladesiderata · 20/02/2021 18:31

I had one fitted, easy peasy. Had uncomfortable symptoms for two months then it was absolute HEAVEN. Stopped my horriblr PMT and grotesque periods, made me feel calm. Loved it.

Pumpkinpops · 20/02/2021 18:35

I have had several. The times I had one inserted before I had DC were really quite painful. But since having kids have had two (one after each child) and insertion was absolutely fine! My GP also gave me diazepam for one of the insertions which did help actually. It works for me, I love not having periods. The first one I had I did get sore boobs at times but that was pretty much it. With this one I get a bit of spotting occasionally.

Viviennemary · 20/02/2021 18:41

No I personally have heard too many horror stories. I'd never have one. Your decision though.

FelicityBeedle · 20/02/2021 18:43

I have copper, but the insertion is the same. I got my first as a 16 year old virgin, it’s a bit uncomfortable but not really that bad, a pinching sensation then a days very light spotting. I really recommend the.

Twinkie01 · 20/02/2021 18:44

Insertion didn’t hurt but it made me a crazy woman. I was angry at the world and hater DH touching me. Sex drive and happiness returned as soon as it was removed.

ShanghaiDiva · 20/02/2021 18:44

I have one.
It’s not a pleasant process, but more uncomfortable than painful.

CatSickYellowSocks · 20/02/2021 18:51

Well mine was a real mixed bag. Insertion was fine, nice not to remember to take a pill every day. But after a few months me feel strange, super emotional and paranoid and didn’t do that much to lesson my periods. It took me ages to realise what was happening which was a bit scary. It also fell out by itself! Was cycling home from school one morning and felt an odd pain, went straight to docs who said yup it’s moved and is on it’s way out. She took it out there and then. Sorry not to have had a more positive experience. If it helps I started using a moon cup a couple of years ago and although it doesn’t lesson the flow it does seem to make my periods shorter, so 4 days instead of 6-7.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 20/02/2021 18:57

Couldn’t be happier with mine - on second. Insertion was a short pinch, I was worried about removal but that was also fine (I do take a couple of paracetamol before these but I have a low pain threshold)
I’ve had no periods for about 8 years (amazing), spotting a bit after new one with a period type cramp for an hour or so. Don’t find it has much hormonal affect on me but then I’ve never suffered to much from heavy periods or pms.

Mary46 · 20/02/2021 18:59

Find it great but uncomfortable the fitting of it. But good done for 5 yrs. Doesnt suit everyone though.

Jenala · 20/02/2021 19:00

Insertion was a bit painful both times for me and crampy afterwards. I needed co-codamol and ibuprofen but it wasn't that terrible.

My first one did fall out, though I didn't realise - the symptom was a heavy period that kept on going until at 12 days of bleeding I went to the clinic and they took it out and put a new one in. It wasn't painful though, not a horror story. I'm glad I have it. I like not thinking about it. Don't notice the strings.

Crackerofdoom · 20/02/2021 19:00

I had 2 after DCs 1 & 2. I also have a very low cervix.

The insertion was horrible. But I had a very difficult birth with DC1 and when the inserted it, I had cramps like labour pains which was awful.

Once they were in though I had no problems at all. Periods were a breeze. I did get the strings cut shorter with the first IIRC as DH could feel them and it was uncomfortable for him.

steff13 · 20/02/2021 19:00

The insertion was no big deal. The subsequent miscarriage I had on the other hand was awful.

fortifiedwithtea · 20/02/2021 19:05

Had coil fitted after 2 vaginal deliveries. It really fucking hurt! But I had no choice went to a gnae apt was told coil fitted now or be put on list for hysterectomy.

On the plus side, it was marvellous never had a period since. But I have been too afraid to have it removed. Nearly 55 and have had that coil in since I was 40.

I think your body still goes through the cycle even if there is no period. Meaning if ovulation pain is an issue for you , you might still get it.

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 20/02/2021 19:07

I’ve had 2 fitted under general, all went well and I’ve been happy having them.

cardibach · 20/02/2021 19:13

Mine was life changing in controlling heavy periods. However, from your point of view - I’ve had more boob soreness with one than without (though usually only for a few months after insertion - on my third? Fourth? Had on ages) and insertion is a right arse. I have a shy cervix and need local anaesthetic injected into the cervix to relax it...
It’s definitely worth it though - five minutes every five years against 10 days every month...

Hadjab · 20/02/2021 20:59

On my third - I cannot lie, it was actually painful this time, but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done, I would recommend it.

AnotherEmma · 20/02/2021 21:03

Try the Kyleena, it's smaller and has a lower dose (still effective for 5 years).

I had one inserted recently, I was nervous but it really wasn't that bad. The worst thing was the speculum (I hate the damn things). Can't feel the strings.

It's early days but I haven't noticed any side effects so far.

FFSAllTheGoodOnesArereadyTaken · 20/02/2021 21:07

To be honest I dont think those are the worst things about it. I think about a third or more people find it awful, for things like low mood or headache. But at least 50pc think it's great. You wont know until you do it. But I think physical things like strings are very low on the side effects list.
I found it no worse than a smear

PurBal · 20/02/2021 21:15

Insertion was difficult. My blood pressure dropped and they almost removed it. I bled for 3 weeks and had to get it checked because I was in so much pain at at about 10 days. Removal was bliss, much easier and more comfortable than a smear. But I loved having it and would have it again, I hadn't had a child when I had it. Currently pregnant.

Survivingmy3yearold · 20/02/2021 21:17

I had a coil fitted on Wednesday evening, it was fine. A little undignified and uncomfortable but nothing major. The dr said I might feel some cramping whilst he did what he needed to do, but I was so busy chatting with the nurse I barely noticed anything and was quite surprised when he said he was done. I had some mild cramping and spotting/heavy discharge (sorry if tmi) which has all stopped now. For me I'd say so far, so good and would recommend it to anyone considering it

Unescorted · 20/02/2021 21:21

I am not sure I can tell you much about the insertion of any of them. The first one DH complained that he could feel the strings so I had them trimmed.
No periods was amazing.
Removal a lot less painful than the period pains I had avoided for 15 years.

AlexaStop · 20/02/2021 21:22

Got mine in December. I've had 2 children and felt very similar to having one of the vaginal exams you get to check dilation. Spotting every couple of weeks since, and seems to have increased my libido, but has given me some hormonal spots. Hoping it settles down. Checking the threads is easy and DH says he can't feel them.

Barmbraic · 20/02/2021 21:24

Definitely didn't help my ovulation pain or sore boobs but absolutely worth it for the light periods.
